Yeah you're right man... some of the lyrics are SO OBVIOUS once
you KNOW it's about aids... otherwise you can't be sure.

I too like James also...It sounded like I was slamming him, but I do like him,
though not nearly as much as Geoff. My complaints also pertain to those
"screaching high notes" James resorts to live. Mayhap he needs the studio to
be able to sound as good a he does on I&W. Just my IMNSHO.

Though, I have been told that Geoff did this in his younger years. Hmmmm.

Does ANYONE out there know of a definite source where I can find Heir Apparent's
One Small Voice? (CD preferrably but tape would be OK) I've tried ranjit and he
can not find it. All of the music stores I've tried say that it is out of print
and so forth. If anybody has the disc, I'd be happy to trade for it or a copy
of it, so please email me. I have quite a bit of stuff including a DT promo
tape from WDADU!

I have "Operation:Livecrime" (video and CD) and I have to say that I've never
liked the VIDEO. There's nothing wrong with the performance but I HATE how it
is shot. THOUSANDS of quick edits, close shots and that pseudo-slow motion
effect just make this video unwatchable. It looks to much like an overblown
MTV video and looks nothing at all like a live concert. What's wrong with
long wide shots that allow me to chose what I'm going to look at and actually
let me focus on something? That's how people actually watch shows.

My "Live in Tokyo" is still in its shrink wrap (JUST got it), so I can't make
the comparison you suggest. But I do have LATM so I can at least compare their
live singing in that way. I do love both bands and both singers so any
criticisms that follow should be considered minor criticisms (i.e. nitpicking).

I have to say I like James better. His range is greater live (at least at this
stage in their careers). Just listen to the studio "Operation: Mindcrime" and
compare it to "Livecrime" and note how many times Geoff kind of skips out of
hitting the high notes. James hits all his high notes live and at times
actually sings higher on LATM than he does on the studio versions. James also
holds notes for their full duration live, and puts his vibrato into it, while
on "Livecrime" Geoff breaks off a lot of his sustained notes early. Of course,
Geoff is older. James also can sing with almost a jazzy, uptempo feel while
Geoff rhytms are pretty straightforward. But I can understand people who
criticize James' voice for being overblown since he's ALWAYS emotional and
has that heavy vibrato on his notes. And sometimes he overextends himself and
sounds a little out of breath. This is where Geoff is better, especially on
the "Building Empires" tour. He's learned the value of restraint. He places
his vibratos and inflections where they count. As his voice has matured
he's lost some high end, but he's been smart and has adjusted-he's now singing
in lower octaves, especially the "Empire" songs. He doesn't over extend himself
and knows his limits well. As a result, his voice has become smoother and
richer. He's much more consistent live than James is.

As a side note, keep in mind that when comparing LATM and "Operation:Livecrime"
CD's, "Livecrime" sounds much more "touched up" to me-i.e. mistakes were
probably covered up in the studio later on- whereas LATM sounds very live and
authentic to me, precisely because there are a good deal of mistakes on it.

>decent, but IMHO he is the least-talented member of an incredible band. To
>hear him compared to (IMHO) the best singer in the business is blasphemous.
>At times I like Charlie better than James...especially on the Killing Hand.
                 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I guess I'm a little suprised that you liked Charlie better. To my
ears his voice has a few deficiencies. It is so thin (no amount of reverb can
help this man) and his range so limited. His voice is somewhat monotonic,
without any emotional inflections. And he has no rhythm: he is always lumbering
behind the beat. "Light Fuse and Get Away" is a good example of Charlie
struggling to keep up with the rest of the boys. James, meanwhile, has great
tempo. He's always pushing the rest of the band forward rather than lagging
behind them like Charlie. And of course James' range, which I would guess is
close to four octave, is much greater than Charlie's, which I would guess is
about 1.5 octaves.

>James' annoying screaming just ruins this song for me on LatM. Does anyone

On "The Killing Hand" (live), James sings with
a lot of emotion. To me, his screams come at certain emotional peaks in the
song and I like it. Kind of reminds me of Ian Gilliam at times.

Saga is way different from DT. I like Heads or Tales but Worlds Apart was
much better (back in 1981). Saga had a hit in the early '80s (Turn to
Loose) and toured with Rush. I understand that they have a new album now.
Any comment?
They used to have lots of synthesizers but the guitar was pretty good too...

Can we please stop this thread right now? Nobody is going to change their
opinions by 1 or 2 messages. Geoff is good. James is good. It's
two totally different types of music. Look, IMHO, if DT didn't
dump Dominicci when they had the chance, they would never be as big
as they are today.

Hi, I've been lurking on this list for a month or so; this is my
first actual post. I have only heard I&W but I'm looking for WD&DU.
Question: On "Learning to Live", the lyrics in the cd booklet,
should that be "spilt" as it is spelled, as in spilled, or "split?" Well,
it doesn't really matter anyway, now does it.
"Take the Time" is by far my favorite DT song.
To the person who asks what King's X sounds like... the sound
great! They sound much more like Extreme than DT. They are fairly
original; I bought their latest untitled album on the recommendation of
people on the Rush fans list and am not dissapointed. They are a Christian
band, but there is little reference to religious themes on most of their
songs.

If it is it's poorply written (Myung lyrics.). It seems to me to be al
song about dealing with violence and discrimination. I dont have the
lyrics with me (My cd is used and the booklet's ready to fall apart, so
I never look at it). Maybe it's meant to have several meanings.

"Through natures inflexible grace, I'm learning to live" could mean that
people are the way they are, and he's trying to deal with it and stand
out.

"I won't give up till I've no more to give" could mean he's fighting to
get himself heard and for people to understand what he's trying to say.

"The 90s bring new questions, new solutions to be found" could mean that
there are more problems, but there are also some solutions to older
problems. "I fell in love to be let down" could mean anything,
symbolically, it could mean he finds out that his early impressions of
the world were wrong, and it's a lot worse than he thought.

I think the screaming is cool. I think it would be boring if it sounded

Well, I don't know if there is a FAQ, but there certainly has been
a maintained discography.. I have tried to keep it as accurate as
possible, here's hoping for inclusion in the next issue of Ytsejam, a
current copy of it... enjoy!

If Anyone would like to conspire with me to administer a FAQ for
Dream Theater, please let me know... the discography taught me one thing:
you can get it up on a lot of FTP sites, but there are many people who
know details before you do and it's tough to keep things up to date! :)

Cheers, Mike/garion@indirect.com

Compiled by: Mike Bahr (garion@indirect.com) (garion#hack)

If you find more from Dream Theater, please do mail me. I'll gladly update
this file. I am sending this to ftp.uwp.edu; please refer to the most
current version on that site.

I'm not perfect. But I'm trying to be as accurate as I can. If you can help
me to that end with this discography, I appreciate it.

I try to get a copy of everything listed here, with exception of some of
the bootlegs I do own them all. If you find new albums, etc please mail
me! Not only will I credit you here but I want to buy the things. :)

A word of thanks goes here to the dozen-odd folks who wrote to me with needed
changes. Since I lost my old account (aumpb@asu.edu) I need you to write me
back at garion@indirect.com and tell me who you were, I want to give name
credit in this discography.

Many thanks to the following for their additions and corrections:
* Randall Haskin (strega@stien1.u.washington.edu)
This guy has done everything short of the editor's job on this
thing. He's given me additional release info (Dance of Eternity CD) and
corrected an assortment of minor mistakes I made in the original. Seems he
keeps finding new things to add as well. Many thanks go here.

* Brent Nuttall (elric@indirect.com)
For information pertaining to the various releases of "Live At The
Marquee" and finding me a copy.

* Dave (dld30@quts.ccc.amdahl.com)
For information pertaining to the Consciously Unreal bootleg,
including liner notes etc. Many thanks!

* Michael Burstin (Mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu)

I'd been following the thread a bit casually, but really, after that
analysis there's no doubt at all in my mind whatsoever. I can now
tell some of my friends who panned DT lyrics as being a bit trite that
they're Full Of It. :)

I just picked up IN TRANSIT, which is a live concert CD with several good songs on it, including my favorites from radio, "Wind Him Up" and one other (the CD is out in the car, else I'd check it, amazing, it's on the tip of my tongue....)

I think they were pretty talented, and a drummer friend has a :?tzlot of respect for their drummer.....

They're Canadian. And they used to be pretty cool. That was about 1981. They were pretty progressive for back then. Neat guitar s stuff, and some neat synth stuff. I like _World's Apart_ (1981) but that's the only one I've got. It sounds dated, but it'd still okay.

> Also, someone mentioned either here or on > NMS a band called Cynic, anyone know anything about them? Guitar F.P.M. mag > had them listed as death metal.

Gods. Gods. Gods. Progressive death/jazz/new-age. Phenominal players (Some say better than DT, but definately heavier). They do sections of pure jazz, sections of pure death metal, and sections of a weird cross-breed death/jazz. My favorite disc of the year...by far. Not for everyone, and certainly not for those of you who like "beautiful" music. They have a mixture of death and synth/melodic vocals. But the melodies are usually jazz/semi-atonal stuff... Very experimental. Good stuff.

Sure, but I think that screeching sounds pretty damned amateurish. IMO, Atco would probably back DT with more support if James didn't screech his high notes that way. Reason: most of my metal/thrash friends, when they hear it, really lose interest in DT as a live presence. If he could actually sing (as opposed to scream) his highest notes, NOTHING would stand between DT and a phenomenal live show.

Well, I've seen James after a brief vacation, and he sounds just as good as Geoff when his voice is fresh.

I like Geoff a lot as well, and I think Geoff has a more powerful voice and perhaps a larger range, but he can't make his voice sound soft very well. I can't see Geoff singing "Surrounded" or anything (nor can he do the beginning to "Silent Lucidity" very well in concert, but it's minor; he's still great!)

I think James's screaming sounds bad on a taped live performance, but if I were sitting in concert I would appreciate the screams, I think. Also, they are very "good" screams. In the same vein as Jesus Christ Superstar by Lloyd Webber.
