Well, surrounded is one of my favorite DT songs. I'm not sure if I know
the meaning, but I love the words and melody (especially the "Light to
Dark, dark to light light to dark dark to light" part) As I said, I'm not
100% sure about the meaning, but I always thoguht of it as this guy who's
girlfriend(wife?) just broke up with him. Lines that I feel support this
(god, I feel like I'm analyzing a poem for class!) "I know it's easier,
to walk away then look it in the eye. But I have given all that I could
take, and now I've only habits left to break" also "When I heard the
stained glass shatter all around me" and "By a candle stands a mirror
of his heart and soul she dances. She was dancing thru the night about his
head." And (hmm, maybe I am right about this one, huh? :) "And walking
to the window .... And from an Ivory tower hears her call, 'Let the light
surround you.'") (although I'm not really sure how the light has to do
with anything. Any ideas?)
Anyway, I might be way off, since I've never been any good at analyzing
abstract meanings anyway ;) But I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks
of my opinion, and also if they have a better idea what it means? :)

Subject: WFS and LTL connection?

On I&W, I noticed that almost no time elapses between the end of "Wait for
Sleep" and the beginning of "Learning to Live." I also noticed that the
piano theme played throughout WFS pops up again in LTL. My guess is that
they're the same song since the shift between WFS and LTL is nothing
different from the kind of shit they pull in other songs from the album
(this is the only album of theirs I have, so if there is a precedent for
this on one of their other albums, I would be the last to know about it).
Are they both the same song? If so, why do they have different titles?

Subject: Re: Light Fuse and Get Away

Someone in issue 249 casually tossed off the remark that, "Light Fuse and
Get Away"'s subject could be summed up in one word: "sex."

I must disagree! It's not about sex; it's about relationships. While I
love the enitre WDADU album (well, except for some of the lyrics that
Dominici wrote), this song stands out, lyrically. Here's my speculation:

The narrator seems to be shifting between two perspectives: one, where he
is looking back at the woman in a relationship where he got burned; and
two, the present (?) where he has adopted a new attitude toward women due
to his bad experience.

Consider that "You like awake, feeling the ceiling and walls closing in
On your conscience - my ally
               The guilt - your afflication
From preying on praise as you fed an attention addiction."

(this was an approximate quote, I don't have the sheet handy)

appears to describe his attitude towards the female in his previous
relationship. To put it in the colloquial, he feels "screwed over," or
used, and this has embittered him to the point where he feels angry at all
women. After all, he can "see what trust and loyalty" did for him the
first time around. So now his unspoken (?) attitude in later relationships
is, "have you ever been used or will this be the first time?"

Basically, I think the narrator's revised attitude is, enjoy it while it
lasts, because when it starts to go downhill, it's never going to come
back. "Light fuse and get away," or get the hell out of there.

While I admit my interpretation is subjective, it certainly gives more
thought to the lyrical content that writing off the whole song as about
"sex." If you want simple songs about sex, there is plenty of material
from Motley Crue and Kiss to choose from.

I think Dream Theater consciously chooses to bring a little more insight to
their lyrics that most bands.

OK, I'm done now. :)

BTW, does anyone know if "Light Fuse and Get Away" has been performed with
James LaBrie?

Hello again...

Stupid question: Whatever happeed to #ragnorock on irc? I only saw it in
existence for like one day. Any what did ragnorock mean? Where did the name
come from?

Video stuff: I bought the dt vid wednesday (was in a hurry to go see primus
after class tuesday), and i must say i am very impressed. I was a little
disappointed at the song selection. I was at least expecting metropolis.
But the inclusion of ytse jam is reason enough to buy the vid. Incredible
shots of Myung's monstrous bass runs. Too bad you can't hear them all that
well on the albums. And Petrucci is absolutely a monster. (Little overuse on
the monster metaphor i see, oh well sorry) Anyway, The production is
phenomenal (well it seems that way after watching my boots dozens of times)
but it seemed they missed some of the most intricate guitar parts. Like those
"sweeps from hell" during the Fortune in Lies solo, I was dying to see a nice
sweet closeup of that, so I could go vainly attempt to play them, and nope,
just a quick glimpse, and a shot of Myung. Are dt hiring new video editors?
:) errrr i mean is the record company hiring any? haha Sorry for my
ramblings. I for one was a little pissed at the editing of the songs for
the videos. I mean my god, the edits are so blatant it is disgusting.
Before, i was pissed at MTV because I thought it was them that edited Pull Me
Under and Take the Time, but I guess it was the record company, or else they
would have include the full length videos. That was one of the main things I
was looking forward to...full length versions. Oh well...blame the attention
spans of the modern mtv zombies. (And top 40 zombies, for that matter) At
least z-rock played all of metropolis when the album first came out (Still
doesn't make up for all the sorry ass stuff they play)

Anyway, later everyone

I asked this once, and got no response, maybe no one reads my posts anymore :)
so here it is again: does anyone out there have a program (on any os) to
create text tablature files? I have downloaded tab files, and seen "created

shitty they might be)? I would be happy to post some of my dt tab i have
learned, but i don't have the tab program or the time to do it all by hand.

I would appreciate any help...

You fool. Light Fuse and Get Away is about a guy feeling guilty about
some mindless sex he had with some chick. Read the lyrics a couple more
times. Think about these:
"Have you ever been used or will this be the first time"
"'I can't see where this is going'"
"Light fuse and get away" (Well, he "lit" her "fuse" and got away
<Think back to **mindless sex** above)

Well, all I can say is where the word was stolen from, not what it was
meant to imply.

Ragnorak, in Norse mythology, was the battle to end all battles. It would
be the end of that generation of Gods and the end of the evil gods as well,
and the borth of the new Gods. When wariiors died in battle, their souls
were carried by the Valkyrie to Valhalla, to prepare to fight in this
final, immortal battle. Why this word was chsen for an irc channel, I have
no clue, other than maybe it sounded cool.

Well, at least they mixed the bass well on the video.

Is it just me, or could anyone else besides me & my roommate find
absolutely nothing in the Another Day video to warrant not airing it?
Ender emailed Adam Curry and asked him, but apparently all the meetings
that are held to decide these things are closed door meetings.

For the first, I believe it's about a naive, young band trying to make it
in the big, bad world.

You're closer than you think. It's a Sci-fi story John P. wrote, and put
to music. Kind of twilight zone-ish. The main character is at a war
memorial, similar to the Viet Nam memorial, wondering about how it all came to
be, and is sucked back in time. When he gets there, he joins in the fight
against the oppressor, and ends up killing their leader. Immediately
after, he is pulled back to his own time, only to find that everyone is
dead, and that his name has been added to the memorial, and that he was the
cause of everyone's deaths.

Actually, $45 is the going price for a 2-CD bootleg, and I'd say a
good-sounding one is worth it. The trick, of course, is to find a
good-sounding one. If you shop at a store, bring a portable CD player
with headphones. :)

I've seen 2-CD bootlegs priced as high as $55, and I've paid as much
as $50 (for the truly excellent Metallica boot TEARING YOUR INSIDES
OUT).

Someone mentioned earlier that "The Killing Hand" might be based on an SF story by John Petrucci. I've always liked the fantasy flavor of "Surrounded" (as well as other songs on I&W), so maybe there's a similar concept behind "Surrounded", some sort of fantasy theme or tale?
