Subject: Re: A Woman Speaks!:DT live

Yup. I had to see DT live when they were in Minneapolis last summer
(actually, they were here twice, but I didn't hear about it the first time).

Anyway, I found out several weeks in advance, and thought, "Hah! No one ever
shows up at these progressive metal shows!" And so, I figured I could just
show up and buy my ticket at the door. It never occurred to me to buy tix in
advance, especially since they were playing at 'The Mirage'; a large bar
    venue.

Much to my surprise, they sold out the day before the show, so I decided to
sneak in. I have long hair, and look kinda like a roadie, so I thought I'd
sneak in in the middle of the afternoon, and just hang out until showtime.

Unfortunately, my girlfriend insisted on going, too, which blows that whole
plan, but we went ahead with it, since it was the only way to get in at this
point. So, in we went, and everyone kinda looked at us strangely, but we just
played it cool, and hung out behing the pool tables, watching the boys set
    up.

We watched a couple of guys play some really *bad* pool, watched John Myung
practice for about an hour and a half before the show (without a break). I
swear the guy is permanently hunched over from watching his fretboard. John
Petruci came in and did some wicked warm ups before the band played an entire
song (almost a year later, I honestly don't remember which one) with no
    vocals.

James came in and talked to some people, and everyone ran around for a while.
It wasn't until James greeted him that I realized one of the sorry pool
players was in fact Kevin Moore!!! I didn't recognize him in his grubbies!

So, it was about this time that a bouncer came up to us and said we'd have to
go outside soon, and present our tickets. We calmly said, "OK", trying not to
give away the fact that we had none!!!

So, now, fearing that I'd wasted 4 hours standing around a dull bar waiting
for the doors to open, I did the inconcievable. I walked up to Kevin Moore
(my personal hero) and told him my sorry situation (not easy to do, with John
Myung warming up in the background) and begged him to get us comps
(complimentary tickets) if at all possible. He looked a bit befuddled by all
    of this and headed backstage.

I guess I'll never know whether it was Kevin's kindness, or the bouncer's
forgetfulness, but soon the doors opened and people started drifting in. We
sort of melded with the crowd and went onto the main floor and sat down (real
    low) near the perimeter.

A couple hours later, the show started, and it turned out the bass player for
the warm up band (very dull - I've forgotten the name) was Kevin's pool
    partner!

Finally, DT came onstage, and put on the show I always knew they could play.
Perfect. I have been a fan since When Dream and Day Unite. Actually, that
disc was recommended to a friend of mine by Fates when he saw them backstage
    on the Exit tour.

What a band. What a sound. What a night!!

Greetings progressive metalheads from Jay Peele (band: INFERNO), I've been a huge DT fan since WD&DU came out and I obtained a promotion copy of I&W the week before it was released (Of course I also have Marquee and DoE as well). I've seen the band perform live 4 times and met them every time. The first time I saw DT Mike Portnoy was wearing one of my band's t-shirts. After the show he told us that a friend of ours in Atlanta had given him the shirt and told him to wear it in Jacksonville.... (Amazing!) About 14 months ago, at a different show here in Jacksonville, my band, INFERNO, got to open for DT. At the soundcheck, they played 'to live (forever)' and a smal part of ACoS (It was incredible). Our music is highly influenced by the likes of Rush, DT, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Yes, Pink Floyd, Watchtower, Voivod, etc. As most of you know, progressive metal bands don't muster up a lot of support so I thought I would ask all of you for help. If anyone is interested in hearing my band's debut independent album entitled 'Psychic Distance' please email me directly at jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu or send a check for $9.25 made payable to Jay Peele to the following address: INFERNO c/o Jay Peele 6556 Fern St. Green Cove Springs, FL 32043

(I will send you a tape - you can trust us progressive types, you know. $8 is to cover the cost of the tape and $1.25 is for postage. The album is over 50 minutes long and has great sound quality. I hope to generate some interest among beloved DT fans... Here is a quote from the song Psychic Distance (Part 2)..

"We sift through our insecurities Longing for innocent bewilderment That feeds an unremembered vision Imposing thought on youth's emotions Feeble attempts to restore tranquil moods We hold on to real motivation

Dare to heed the call Dare to chase the light Endure the freezing cold Persist until the end Dare to question lies pressed upon your mind"

So what, someone posted it and some people are duped into thinking it is real. Big deal. Anil Prasad has been pulling that shit for years and you always hear the reactionaries getting pissed off. Anyway, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting John Petrucci at the 1994 NAMM show in Anaheim. I was able to videotape a few songs that he played (solo) at the Ibanez booth there.

He was a hellofa guy, and was probably one of the nicest we met while we were there. For those of you who don't know what NAMM is, find out, and go next year.

    Hi Frode!

You're lucky! In the U.S. we only have Images & Words: the rest of them have to be bought from import dealers. WDADU and LATM are not published in the States! Just thought I'd give ya a good laugh at how hard it is for us to get DT stuff... hehe

I had a strange experience today-- thought I'd share it:

I was walking past the marching band on campus today(they were practicing for the annual Picnic Day parade). I listened to them for a moment and then this strange creeping feeling came over me when I started singing "This world is spinning around me" along with the music. I couldn't believe they were playing Pull Me under! Now, its strange enough to hear it on the radio, but being played by the UCDavis marching band? Very odd!

Well, just thought I'd share that weirdness with everyone! THanks for listening!
