I've had just about as many problems... but I now have just about the
entire song, and am blasting it though my stereo (from a SB16 ASP
Pro)... The intro really sounds awsome!!! I still have to decide
about the rest of the song... Again... very different from I&W...
and a little heavier...
The thing is a BITCH to get... I had to FTP it 4 times to my account
to get it to work... b/c our /users ran out of disk space... so I
downloaded it to our /tmp dir... I try downloading it to my computer
w/ Zmodem... and it kills itself a few times in the middle of the
track... That was after about 5 megs, and 45-60 mins... I finally
went down the Pitt (where I am telnetting in from) and copy it...
then ZIP it up to a disk... Now I have one bad disk in the middle :(
but most of the song works... (One thing... if you do get parts of
the song and are using a Windows machine... use the MEDIA PLAYER that
comes w/ Windows... don't use a better recorder (like one that comes
w/ a SB card) b/c it doens't work as well w/ corrupted WAV files...)
Anyway... I plan on taping the song... and maybe trying one more
download... There is some really FAST playing in the one instrumental
section that I just heard...

>
This is the page that I was talking about yesterday... It is also run
by the person who sent me a copy of the lyrics... which are nw
available at the FTP site...
Anway... Lie sounds pretty good... w/ some very fast guitar
portions... but... my file just cut in the middle... so I can't say
how it ends... unless I can revive a disk... (NDD to the rescue...
I hope)

Yes, *Lie* is indeed FTP-able -- all 20 MB of it! It is a 22 KHz, 8-bit stereo sample of 451 seconds duration -- and it sounds awesome. Of course playing it is a swapping job on my 16 MB Windows NT box, but play it does! Drool...
Unfortunately, a 20 MB file isn't easily accessable. Zipping helps some (reduces it to 14.2 MB), but resampling at a lower monophonic rate will drastically improve the size situation.
My tentative plans are to make a good tape backup of the sample, replay it, sampling at 11 KHz 16-bit mono for best sampling, then converting to 8-bit. The resulting .wav file will be 4.8 MB. It will hopefully compress to 4 MB or a bit less. The highest frequencies rendered will be 5.5 KHz, about what you would hear from an AM radio station (were they to play Dream Theater). :) The current sample is a pinch below FM-station quality.
Would anyone be interested in my making this reduced quality sample available via anonymous FTP? Or would I be wasting my time?
Respond via email for fastest response. If I get a flood of email in the positive sense, I'll try to have it accessable soon!

Well, I downloaded Lie... the complete thing... and playing through a SB16 Pro... and I must say, I'm not too impressed... the intro was good, the outro was good... but the rest sounds like Pantera with a progressive touch...
Hope it's different on the album...

No, no, you've got it all wrong. He'd be in Yes. Or at least he would have been 15 years ago. Wakeman is Mozart reincarnated, it's just not well publicised. There lives are even following similar patterns. Mozart did all his best stuff then got crap and died an ill man. Wakeman has done all his best stuff and now appears on any crap quiz show the BBC care to turn out. How the mighty have fallen....

For evidence of Bach's improvisational prowess, see "Godel, Escher, Bach" by Douglas Hofstadter. He relates an anecdote of Bach spontaneously composing and performing a four-part fugue. A fugue has a specific set of "rules" in order to be played properly, and a two-part was (and is) considered difficult to improvise. Most composers would have a hard time composing a three-part at all, let alone IMPROVISING and PERFORMING a four-part on the spot. Mind- boggling. Wow, all of a sudden there's a lot happening in the world of DT.
Those guys at ftp.music.net are doing a pretty fine job. There are now several 'Snippets of LIE' and some recent interview stuff in AU format and all for under 1 MB each.
Now if you can all drag yourselves away from your soundboards for a few moments, I've got a question for all you keyboard players out there. Funnily enough, it's to do with WFS, but not at all related to the time sig. On I&W the sound that Kevin gets is a sort of reverb piano with strings over the top. I assumed that this was just two different voices with some sequencing involved. But having recently bought LiT (and, fuck me, was it worth the 10 pounds) he gets the same sound live. My question is, is it sequencing? Is it just one of the sounds you can get out of his keyboard? How does he do it? He hasn't got enough hands to play it all at once!
On a seperate note, time to come clean about my age and shit like that. I'm 20, currently studying software engineering at Birmingham University in England (the original one). I got into DT only last year when my girlfriend wouldn't stop playing I&W and narrowly missed them playing at Rock City in Nottingham. In retrospect, this is a real pain in the arse. They played their on the Wednesday and it took me till Saturday to decide I loved them. I would have probably got to meet them too. Rock City is a pretty small, cosy venue. Oh well, only a few more months to wait till they tour. This brings me to another question. I noticed someone posting stuff about a secret hush, hush gig somewhere. If anyone hears about, or can find out about, anything like secret gigs or appearances in Britain then PLEASE post it or mail me. I've just gotta meet the guys. Also, am I the only person on this list in the UK, or what?
Gotta go, Lie's downloading as I type!!! :):):):):):)

Forward from BUFFALO@PANIX.COM follows.
Sources close to Dream Theater report that Kevin Moore "has decided to leave the band to pursue a new musical direction which would not be possible for him to explore within the confines of Dream Theater. The split is friendly, and we wish Kevin the best of luck in his future endeavors. In the meantime, please rest assured that Kevin's replacement is of world class caliber and we will ABSOLUTELY NOT lose any momentum in our drive to make Dream Theater the success that they so rightly deserve to be."
And from another source:
"It's official. He's out...Jens Johanssen (Yngwie) is the replacement. Onward. Amicable split due to Kevin's widening musical perspective."
That's all I know for now....
