Lee, I used to have two albums by Annihilator. They had a decent guitar
player and a semi-progressive sound. However, their singer was so annoying
that I had to get rid of their albums. They had a different singer on
each album and both were really annoying. Neither one seemed to fit the
music that was being played. The best songs were their instrumentals.
They do have a third album out now and I think they have yet another
lead singer. He may be better so this album may be better than their
first two but I haven't heard it. Of course, this is just my opinion
and others may disagree. :-)

Personally, I feel that women liking Dt are really cool. I see nothing
wrong with it just like I see nothing wrong with men liking let's say
classical music (although most men would be looked down upon by other
men for doing so; it's just a stereotype though). Well, that's just
my thoughts about the subject. I feel as though I can communicate with
a woman more easily if she can relate to my musical likings.

someone recently posted their fav prog-metal bands, and was curious about
Queensryche before Mindcrime. I have all their studio albums, and think
Mindcrime is the best, followed by The Warning (their second I believe).
Rage for Order doesn't do anything for me, unless I just haven't heard it for
a year.

Rage for Order might be at the bottom of the heap of Queensryche albums, but
remember, it's still Queensryche. I put off my purchase of it for a long
time because I heard it was the worst, but I enjoyed it fair enough when I
heard it.
Kind of the same thing with Counterparts by Rush - not my favorite by them
but, it's still Rush so it's better than most stuff.

Galactic Cowboys: They sound a lot like King's X, with the harmony vocals...
They have a thrashier/heavier sound, though...Their second album sounds less
like King's X than the first, and is IMO better overall...It is also heavier
than the first...

Annihilator: Their first (Alice in Hell) is straightforward thrash...Their
second (NEver, Neverland) is lighter with a different vocalist, who is
altogether too pop-oriented for the band...Their third (Set the World on
Fire) is more commercial, with the band's first ballad(s)...They're all
good, the second two are more melodic than the first, the third being the
most so...

i was introduced to dream theater by a female friend of mine.
most people out here in indiana have never heard of them, but
my interest in them doesnt surprise anyone since ive listened to
metal music since 8th grade (what surprises them is my nefound
interest in country music, but thats another story).
the people i know wouldnt know what a "progressive" metal band
is anyway... im just glad my friend had me listen to IAW about
a year ago, now i am more of a fan than she is... and now i
realize what great musical talent really is... it saddens me though
when im walking around campus with my DT in my walkman, i think
about all those people out there who have never had the
experience of listening to DT... such a shame...
im just glad i had the opportunity to see them live, it
was definitely the best concert ive been to...

i was curious.. how much does the 'live in tokyo' video
usually sell for?? here in indiana, i found the CD for @ $20
and i found the video for $16.... doesnt make much sense
to me...

Lee wanted to know how the above two bands sounded. Well, here I go.

GALACTIC COWBOYS
I only discovered this amazing Houston quartet late last year but they
have two albums out. The first from 1991 is self-titled, the second is
called "Space in Your Face" (1993). Their sound is actually quite unique
(at least I think so): grinding riffs coupled with surprisingly melodic
harmonies. I am very partial to a well-worked harmony which makes this
band very intriguing to me. Both albums are on a par with each other and
elements from the first appear in the second. For example, there is a song
about high school reminiscence on both albums - "My School" and "Where are
you Now?"; there is a topical song on each - "Kaptain Krude" (Exxon Valdez
disaster) and "Circles in the Field" (have aliens landed); I also love the
bonus 'secret' tracks. Lyrically the first album can be cringeingly bad at
times ("Someone For Everyone" and maybe "Why Can't You Believe In Me?")
but the great sound and vocal work of these tracks somehow redeems them in
my eyes. This certainly marks the second album as an advance. I just hope
the Cowboys will be back next year with more of the same (and a deserved
record label - can anyone tell me why Geffen dropped them?).

ANNIHILATOR
I only have the latest album at the moment which is supposedly the worst.
Once again, lyrically the album "Set The World On Fire" is sometimes
pathetic ('Knight jumps Queen and you know what I mean, anticipation of
the final scene' - subtle innuendo I think not) but the engaging sound has
redemptive qualities. I especially like the opening bars to the title
track and "Phoenix Rising" is a superbly realized song. I would appreciate
anyone else's views on the previous two albums.

Hope this helps

Matt
