    Hi everyone,

Catching up on some _really_ old mail here...

    Jeff Stern <stern.35@postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu> asked:

    >>>I was wondering if there are any Paul Gilbert fans out there?<<<

I'm not a _huge_ fan (although I used to be a total Shrapnel head :), but I
hung out with Paul once at a Shawn Lane show in LA. :) Seemed like a very
cool guy. He worships Shawn, as do I. :)

    >>>a guy who lives by me played me a boot called "A Tribute to Hendrix" last
night that is from a 1991 German Jazz Festival. ...<stuff deleted>... It must
be from a soulndboard because the sound is at exceptional quality. Anyway,
my question is, has ANYONE heard f this disc and where to find it?<<<

My brother bought this CD a couple of years ago & sent me a tape of it. It
is pretty interesting listening. :) Anyway, I just saw a copy of that CD at
a record shop a few minutes from my house the other day, which totally
shocked me because it's more of an alternative/gothic music place... lots of
Morrissey stuff. :) If you really want a copy of this (and you sound like
you do) & want me to pick it up for you, I'd be glad to, just e-mail me &
    we'll work out the arrangements.

I doubt anyone's going to buy it anytime soon, I don't think any Paul Gilbert
fans really frequent that place.haha ;) They did have the DT Lords Of Sound
boot (which I bought because I didn't have it :), the Lie & The Silent Man
singles, plus some other boot CD Mike Portnoy played drums on, _Inner
Sanctum_, I think it was called(?). Pretty cool place, I guess, just a
    little hole-in-the-wall in a strip mall. :)

    One more thing! :)

    Derek D. Sussner <derek@pandora.micro.umn.edu> asked:

    >>>If you think driving to Pantera is a challenge (and an enjoyable one at
that - especially in a crappy little Escort), then try driving to Fight! Any
word on Halford and the boys?<<<

I don't know if this counts as news, but I heard Russ Parish playing bass(?)
on the Mark & Brian radio show (local LA morning show) last Friday as part of
a friend of mine's (Kevin Gilbert) band. They're playing a gig at the
Troubadour in LA on June 1st & Russ will apparently be playing in the live
band as well. I'll be attending this show myself, so if anyone's interested
in going, let me know (Tony K, I _know_ you'll be there :) !

Also, I just talked to a DJ friend of mine on the phone tonight (who I also
sent a copy of Kev's new demos to - he loved them & will be playing them on
his radio show :) & he said that he heard that Fight's new album is supposed
to be out soon, but didn't know who the current band members were.

    Enough rambling for now. :)

    Take care all,

(Yay, my modem works now, BTW. :)

On the _I&W_ tour, DT added "Status Seeker" to their set list at shows during
the latter part of the tour (around April '93, if I'm not mistaken). This
new version they played live was a little different from the original, album
version (_besides_ the fact that James LaBrie was singing it instead of
Charlie :). What was different about the song and why was it altered?

Hope that isn't too hard. :) I'll post the answer to the list when I have
    ten correct responses.

    Good luck!!

More mail to come from me, lots of catching up to do...

    Me again, :)

Steve Borzilleri <silenzio@elwha.evergreen.edu> did a rather lengthy &
indepth analysis of DT's vocalists awhile back, nice going!

    >>>(1) John Hendricks has a nice, even voice, but I think that that's the
problem. It's a bit _too_ nice and even. It seems he's just hitting the notes
to pass the time. He doesn't growl or scream, just very calmly sings his
    parts, flawlessly but not amazingly.<<<

This is basically my opinion as well. I love his version of "Don't Look Past
Me;" he hits a really nice, high note on that one, but otherwise, he was
    pretty bland.

    >>>He had an impressive range, though, and excellent vibrato, and I can't
imagine why he wasn't chosen. All I can suppose is that DT either didn't get
along with him personally, or they wanted a vocalist with more flair.<<<

Well, I don't know how much this has to do with it, but I met John Hendricks
when DT played the LA area for the first time, in late '92. He was hanging
around after the show & after I mentioned something about the vocalist
audition tapes to Mike P, he introduced me to him. I was a _bit_ shocked
that the fellow standing in front of me was John Hendricks, the same person
who auditioned for DT... he had extremely short hair, looked really clean-cut
& was wearing "preppy" clothes (for lack of a better word - he had on an Izod
shirt & khaki pants). Not that there's anything wrong with that (as Seinfeld
might say :), he may have cut his hair, etc., after the audition anyway, but
I was just surprised because he wasn't what I was expecting at all. Of
course, I wasn't expecting Derek to look the way he looked either. ;) I do
admire DT for picking someone (Derek) based on their talent & chemistry w/the
band, not because of how "rock-n-roll" they looked. But I also think it's
possible that the band wanted someone who looked a little more like a "lead
singer" than Hendricks since vocalists do tend to be the frontmen & represent
the band's image to the general public. I don't really know, this is all
speculation on my part. :) Just wanted to comment on that. The producer of
the _Majesty_ demo, Paul Falcone, was also backstage at that show. Small
    world. :)

    >>>(2) Steve Stone clearly had a vocal style before he met up with DT.<<<

I keep seeing this CD in the cut-out bins by a Steve Stone, is this the same
guy? I think the CD came out in '90 or something like that. He definitely
_looks_ like lead singer material. :)

    >>>(4) Chris Cintron did lots of harmonies with what he sang, which is an
admirable quality with vocalists. He reminds me of John Hendricks somewhat,
but he's got a bit more flair in his singing.<<<

I'll probably make a few enemies by saying this, but I like the Chris Cintron
version of A Change Of Seasons a lot more than the James LaBrie version.
*ducks as YJammers begin throwing things :)* Of course, that opinion may
"change" (pun intended) once I hear a properly-recorded, studio version with
James singing it. I think James is _amazing_ on the albums, I can't wait to
hear what he does with ACoS on the EP.

I do have to agree w/Steve that, when all was said & done, uhh, I think DT
definitely picked the right guy for the job in the end, James LaBrie. :)

Kinga, I loved your "monthly post" on the virtues of Mr. Tate also! :)

Actually, I don't. If you read more carefully, I think I
qualified that "it ain't what it used to be," or something to that effect.

Doubtful. They left out a huge chunk of it on the "Whiskey" CD.

    > opened with part of Magnum Opus (up thru Howlin' at the Moon). You can find
    > this on Live at the Whiskey.

Correction - They opened with that as early as 1989. Saw them
2/11/89 and 2/14/89 at the Tower Theater with Morse on guitar. The band
started playing the intro section, then Walsh stood on a chair in the
audience and sang Howling...then they kicked into "One Big Sky."

Still, it's not Magnum Opus. Play the whole damn thing.

    > I don't think your typical audience would stomach them.

Well, then they shouldn't come. =) (j/k) I know this.

    > they don't only pull out Dust, Carry, and Point.

All of which Walsh has a great deal of trouble singing.
    Especially Point's bridge section. <shudder> It's UGLY.

    > You certainly should not skip a Kansas show, even if they aren't what they
    > were in the 70's.

See, I'm so wary of shelling out the $ to go after shelling out
the $ to be disappointed with "Whiskey." Even Mike Portnoy said he didn't
like it nearly as much as "2 for The Show."

    > He wasn't a fundamental element of Kansas anyway. The best Kansas stuff
    > happened between their self titled album, and Audio-Visions. Then Steve Walsh
    > left. They haven't been nearly as good since.

Well, I actually LIKED some of the material with Elephante. But,
thing is, back when i saw them in '89, the tour guide didn't even list
those two albums in the Discography! Yet, they did "Play The Game Tonight."
    HMM!

And regarding Morse: I just liked hearing him with them. Were it
not for Kansas, I probably wouldn't have discovered him back in '86.
(Hey, I was a late bloomer to the Morse's World-O-Wonder! Man, is that
    guy incredible or what?)

The bass on most of WDADU sounds like a fart. It's probably not your
speakers. I guess you missed the bass lectures I gave a few months ago. =)

The other thing is this: as long as you're not overdriving your
speakers, you won't blow them. In other words, if you're driving speakers
capable of handling 50 watts per channel with a 2,000 watt amplifier,
then you probably blew your speakers. If they're closely matched, and you
haven't turned the power on with the volume up to "11," then you probably
    haven't blown them.

Did anyone ever do that with their car stereo? I did once or twice.
=) (I hate when I forget to check the volume knob...) Luckilly, I have
about 20-30 watts per channel headroom on my speakers...but, hey - it
really gets your day jumpstarted, if yaknowwhutimean. =)

ah, well. Take it easy, boys & girls! =)

Just a thought regarding the problems with this Jeremy-dude: Have you
tried to talk to someone in charge at his site like: postmaster@........
He could probably tell what has happened, and maybe provide you with home

he's dead or something. For what I know parts of the US can be dangerous

            Cool! I love Crack the Sky... :-) I don't believe they're together
anymore, but they have put out quite a few albums. I especially enjoy their
older albums which have some prog influences but could probably be considered
hard rock for the most part. Sort of like Queen in that respect (cool rock
with some prog tendencies). In fact, I'd say they had some strong influences
from Queen on their older albums, especially in the music. Their vocalist,
John Palumbo, is excellent (though not like Freddy Mercury).
I'd definitely recommend trying them out. Don't expect a metal sound
or anything much like Dream Theater though. Their albums are pretty hard to
find these days, but I have seen their older albums on CD with two albums
    per CD.
I'd recommend trying "Safety in Numbers" or their self-titled debut
album first. Those are the strongest of their older albums. They have a few
new albums, but they sound completely different than their older stuff (and
not as good IMHO). One of the new albums is called "From the Greenhouse" and
is not bad, with some Pink Floyd influences. I'd still recommend trying
    the older stuff first though.
Or, if you can't find their albums, I could make a sampler tape for
you to try. Just let me know...

Hello ytsejammers, it's Babs. I have a question for the guitar players on
the list. I have been approached by a neighbor who has a nephew that is
looking to buy a "first" guitar and they asked me if I was interested in
selling mine. Then they ask me what price I wanted. I need advice. Here's
    the statistics on it:

A Hondo (it was an 80's company) copy of Gibson Les Paul
Black with cream binding and pickups

I don't know what the hell to ask for it. I bought in 1986 at the House of
Guitars and it had had one previous owner before me. Anybody have any
    recommendations?

You're making a HUGE mistake. They are still one of the top live acts
    of all time.

    Wrong! He will be now!

Wrong! Songs I've heard in the past 1-3 years: Icarus, JfM (They
actually skipped this when I saw them last summer [grumble], but they
played this a LOT on the last tour), SfA (full version), Magnum Opus
(not ALL of it, but about half), etc.

Yeah. It's supposed to have been out yesterday (4/18). Haven't had any
money lately so I haven't been to the record store to check it out.

As for Russ Parish, he left the band about a year or so into the Fight
tour, said he was tired of the music and wanted to do something new. Last
I heard he went back home to Ohio(?) got together with his old band
buddies, relocated them out to LA, and is looking for a record deal.

Fight got a new guitar player at that time (don't know his name) and it
seems he fits more into the band, image- and music-wise, seeing that Russ
was more of a shred-meister, Shrapnel type who could actually play.

    Hope this helps,

You're not the only one, Jen. I also happen to like Cintron's ACOS a lot
better than LaBrie's, but like you said, James hadn't done it in the

Hmm, lemme see. It was right after the Portnoy solo, and there was a new
intro tacked onto the beginning of it. That's all I remember.

P.S. If that's not what I'm looking for, can I get another guess after I

The same thing happened to me, but I got new ones only to find out that it
was the CD. Thanks to the new speakers my car stereo kicks ass. Right Jeff?
It seems that many of the first kick drum beats on a song also sound like
farts. Maybe Mike P. miked his drummer's throne and had a lot of Taco Bell
for lunch. Maybe I've taken this to far. I don't know. My friend Jeff and I
also noticed that on the Blue Murder CDs Tony Franklin's bass sounds
something like a long fart. We call this Braaaaaah -ing. Geddy does it a lot
too. Well enough about that, I have to go.
    Hasta Manana.

Hey... I'm wondering about Kansas. I have two of their albums, Point of
Know Return and Leftoverture, and I'm wondering if there is anything left
to get. I mean, they're fairly similar in style. Are any of their other
albums different from these two, and which should I get?

Well, it IS true that her first album is OUT OF PRINT. However, a perfect
bootleg copy w/ cover art and sleeve (the whole shmeal) is widely
available. If you know of a store or catalog around you who carried Tori
bootlegs, chances are they cshould have it. I've seen many of them in
record stores around here (Columbus). I have no reason to buy it, tough
since it is supposed to be horrible. I haven't even ought Little
Eartquakes yet because I haven't found it USED (I'm allowed to be cheap,
I'm a college student). Anyway, that's all I know, so use it to your
    advantage.

This album was readily available in any used shop until Little Earthquakes
hit. Haven't seen it since. Strange how that works. And before anybody
    asks, no I don't have a copy - Tori's music doesn't really grab me.

DT note: I was listening to I&W the other day, and a line from Metropolis
jumped out and hit me: "the two of you will be confined in (to?) this
mind". Sounded terribly similar to "A Mind Beside Itself" - Metropolis II?
Haven't seen this brought up yet, so there I go...
