Hello everyone, it's Babs. I wanted to share my DT boot from Impaxx in
Buffalo, NY (May 1993) with you. I previously had a copy before, but like
I had mentioned in a previous post I had given it to a guy I liked, without
making a copy for myself (foolish girl that I was). It is truly wonderful.
What is really cool is hearing how rough James' voice was at that show,
it's great to see how he has progressed. A sadful note, there's a part of
the show where James says "take it maestro, Kevin Moore". I wish that
they (DT & Kevin) could patch things up. Also, I need some input from any
jammer who has this boot. My question is, before they played Take the Time,
I swear that I heard the intro to The Mirror. Does anyone know how long they
had the music to The Mirror? I thought that Awake was all knew stuff, but
after hearing what I heard from 1993 it doesn't appear to be that way.
Also, a note to the guy (Eric Anderson - I believe?). He opened his post \
with "hello fellow brothers of DT" - please keep in mind that there are
several women on this list (Michelle Garcia in CA, brought this to my attention)and to try not to exclude us, alright? Take care! -BABS

Up here in Penn State, there is a program on our college radio station, on
Wednesday nights, called "Metal Hour." The other night, they were counting
down the top metal albums of 1994. I really didn't think I'd hear DT at
all, considering some of the other (HEAVY!!) material that was on the
countdown. However, toward the end of the countdown, none other than
"6:00" comes blaring out from the radio station! The album was anounced by
the DJ at #3 for PSU's 1994 Metal countdown! The DJ commented how he liked
the album, but not as much as I & W. Also, a few other of the guys in the
background were trashing the "Lie" video, saying the video content has
NOTHING to do with the song (Although I'm a DIE-HARD DT fan, I tend to
agree with them). Anyway, thought you'd all like to hear that.
Oh, one more musical suggestion: If you want to hear some AMAZING,
INSPIRATIONAL orchestrated-ensemble music, check out a composer by the name
of David Holsinger. He is my FAVORITE modern day composer. He has a very
famous composition entitled "To Tame the Perilous Skies," written for the
Air Force Academy band back in the late 80's, early 90's. The music is
INCREDIBLY melodic and has TONS of meter changes; perfect for the common
DT/Prog. Rock listener.
Definately don't miss hearing this masterpiece!

Can anyone out there confirm this for me? Last weekend, eMTyV was showing
a "Best Of" special of HeadBanger's Ball all weekend (Pretty decent stuff,
by the way). I recently heard a rumer, though, that the reason why it was
shown was because MTV gave Headbanger's Ball the final axe to the show's
existance. So, could someone tell me if they really cancelled the show or
not? Although I can definately do with out Ricky Packman, I can't see
Saturday night's without Headbanger's Ball!

Here's a review of Magellan's "Impending Ascension" from our last issue of
PROGnosis:
"Impending Ascension"
Magellan (Magna Carta)
Although this album has been available for over a year as an import, it is
important to talk about it now for a couple of reasons. The first is that it
will now be released domestically (translation: lower price!) and the second
is that this band is very important to the progressive scene in America.
Magellan is a three piece band that sound much bigger than the sum of its
parts. Led by keyboardist/singer Trent Gardner they form a lush wall of audio
that is extremely pleasureable to prog ears. Trent's layers of sound for the
fabric that holds the music together.
This album, their second, is more aggressive than 1991's Hour Of Restoration
but it keeps that Magellan flame alive with more songs of social concern
("Waterfront Wierdos") and politcal commentary ("Estadium Nacional") which
made 'Hour' so interesting.
More prominent in this latest project is guitarist Wayne Gardner who gets a
chance to stretch out a bit and show off his skill as one of progressive
rocks most tasteful players. His work on "Virtual Reality" is especially
nice. Hal Imbrie fills out the lineup with a solid sound on bass that is
often paired against Trent's keyboard bass to form some interesting lines.
One thing that some say detracts from music and should be shunned is the
prescence of sequenced drums. But, wait! When you hear the drums of Magellan
you won't think about the techno/disco rhythms used by many a band who use
programmed drums! That's because their sequencing is probably the best you
ever hear. So many bands who use sequencing use is as an afterthought to the
musci but these guys make it sound like they have the most awesome drummer on
the planet. They add the most human touch to this that I've ever heard. There
actually is a live drummer on "Waterfront Wierdos" and that is Doane Perry
(Jethro Tull) who makes a cameo here.
There really is a lot to listen to on this album. It's definately not just a
'one time through' CD but it's got so many things going on that it will
satisfy you even after several listenings. Take for instance the instrumental
"No Time For Words" which segues nicely into the story of the band's namesake
in "Storms And Mutinys." This is a real epic which can be enjoyed not only
for the great playing and diverse musical themes but the lyrics that are
painstakingly accurate in the story of Magellan and his travels and travails.
Magellan has proven themselves again with Impending Ascension and by all
indications will do so in their next album due out in '95, Test Of Wills.

Today I asked Mike about the cover concert. He said that Glenn Tipton(from
Judas Priest), Barney Greenway(from Napalm Death), Steve Howe(ex-Yes),
Bruce Dickinson(ex-Iron Maiden), and probabry Rick Wakeman(ex-Yes)will
be guests. And he also said they are going to record the show.
DT played the Pink Floyd song "In the Flesh?" with vocal today, in Tokyo.
They said it was a kind of rehearsal of the cover concert...

Hi 'Jammers,
I was corresponding with a fellow 'Jammer (Hi, Babs) the other day, and we
were talking about the high percentage of 'Jammers that are college students
(this is a good thing - it ensures a long, prosperous future for DT).
However, I'm 28. Anybody out there older than me? Maybe we'll all get
together and buy a cane and cover it with DT stickers and give it to the
oldest 'Jammer.
Someone was asking about good Pat Methany stuff. I have a couple of his
CDs. My favorite is "The Road to You (Live)". It's a collection of his live
stuff from several different shows in Europe. If you don't like this CD,
you probably won't like any Pat M.
I can't believe some of you don't like FW. But then again, I can't stand
Primus and a lot of people think they're awesome. Must be a matter of
taste...... Anyway, I just got FW's Inside Out - which I think is a lot
better than Parallels (which is still good). I haven't heard Perfect
Symmetry so I can't compare it to that.
Have a good day, everyone. By the way, I'm glad to hear all the Japanese
'Jammers are OK. Have any of the California 'Jammes been adversely affected
by the flooding.

Why do you think you were not impressed? Because the music was bad? I'd
like to suggest it's because you don't understand the music. Don't get
me wrong here. I'm not criticizing you at all. A lot of people
(including myself) have confused their unfamiliarity with a particular
style or genre and "bad music." I'd like to put forward the suggestion
that all music is good music if it does what it's intended to do. A
lullaby is good if it makes you sleep. A dance song is good if it makes
you feel like dancing.
We sometimes don't understand a genre or style because we
haven't been educated about how to listen to it. If you've never
listened to heavy metal before, for example, you may not understand its
purpose, or even how to listen to it. If you listen to Metallica on a
cheap tape player with the volume turned way down so as not to hurt your
ears, you aren't really listening to it the way it was intended. The same
goes for classical music. If you don't know what sonata allegro form is
and you listen to Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor expecting a heavy
backbeat, you WILL NOT be able to appreciate the genius of the piece.
This is why I urge you to educate yourself before listen to a jazz
piece or Japanese dance or Russian Ballet or an Impressionist sypmphony. And
then cast aside all your previous intuitions and assumptions and listen
carefully with an open mind as well as an open ear. If there was just one
more hour in a day, I'd spend sixty minutes more exploring the vast
cultures of music. You can learn a great number of things about a
culture from its music alone.
Good luck on your quest for great music.

Does anybody have the lyrics for "To Live Forever"? I have the
studio version of the song which is on the UK "Lie" single. There are no
lyrics posted in the inside cover. :( Like all DT songs, the song grows
on you. I listen to it all the time. There are some portions of the song
where the lyrics are unintelligible. I would really like to know what
James is saying during these uninteligible portions of the song.
On another note, I saw DT play up here in Portland, OR. I've never seen
anything like it!!!!I am proud to say that I have no musical talent
whatsoever. I think that is why I can appreciate a band like DT so much
(because I have no hope in hell of ever being able to do any of what they
do). Anyway,FW opened for DT and I was unimpressed. Maybe it is because
I had never heard any FW prior to the concert, or maybe it is because I am
not a musician. On stage, FW sounded garbled and muted like a cheap garage
band. To the untrained ear, all of their songs sounded the same. Based on
their performance in Portland, I would not rush out to buy a FW cd. Based on
the crowds response, not much of the crowd, would be flooding the local music
stores in search of FW CDs either. I am sorry if I offended any FW/DT fans,
but I thought I would band together with the other DT fans out there who fail
to see the talent and musicianship of FW that so many other DT fans seem to
be in such awe of.
One more thing, to the best of my knowledge, DT has never played
in Sacramento, CA. On the I&W Tour, the show was cancelled due to a fire :(
On the "Awake" tour they passed up Sacramento all together. I have many,
many friends in Sacramento who are some of the biggest DT fans that ever
lived. They would like to see DT in concert. If anybody has anykind of
influence on tour dates at all please take these two previous no shows into
consideration when planing the next tour dates. Thank you
Again, sorry DT/FW fans.

Hi everyone,
What is this, my fourth post of the day or something? Somebody shut me up. :]
Just a little update on the dubbing thing. I got Kev's three new demos last Thursday (I'm listening to them on headphones for about the twentieth time as I type :), so I just sent out instructions to everyone who volunteered to be a dub site. Hopefully, some dub sites within the US will be ready to open as soon as the beginning of February (yes, that soon!). Slowly, but surely, the ball is now rolling. :) The demos add up to about 55 minutes total, BTW! It's like getting a whole new album. :)
If anyone who wrote to me about being a dub site hasn't received a dubbing FAQ within the next day or two, e-mail me and I'll make sure that you get one. Thanks!
I'll keep you posted!

Where can one find the 2cds-in-1normalcase type case? I would like to stick my RUSH CHRONICLES cd set into one of those Time Machine-type 2cd cases.
ALSO: NON-RELATED (THIS IS FOR EVERYONE)
IS someone taping the COVERS ONLY special show that is in Europe? If not, SOMEONE better. That needs to get on tape!! DT doing covers? C'mon, that is great material. Great bootleg or tape trading material. ;-)
I can even think of a name for the boot: "COVERED WITH DREAMS" Corny huh?

first of all, the cd's been sold.
james's voice was pretty bad through most of the i&w tour, judging by my boots. most of the time he sounds like he has a really bad cold and he struggles to hit the notes and stuff. if you listen to boots from early on in the tour he sounds relatively smooth, not as much as i&w but pretty close and for the most part sings like he does on the album. later on, for example the live in tokyo video, he sounds very harsh and he struggles and he's out of breath a lot. on live at the marquee, he sounds very good, he probably had some time to rest his voice before it.
also, i dont think its possible to judge his voice by concerts you've attended. even with earplugs, which reduce the volume a lot and make the instruments and vocals clearer, he sounded much better at the pittsburgh 94 concert than on the boot video i have of the same show. his mistakes are obvious on the video and he still sounds pretty harsh and he struggles for notes. course, he did a better job singing than i did... you can hear me on the chorus of caught in a web... blech...
he sounded fine to me at the pittsburgh i&w tour show at the ic light amphitheater, from the section of the tour where they were doing status seeker (same set as the i&w tour toronto show video), but i as far as i know there are no boots of that show so i cant tell for sure.

Uhm... uh, I'm 72. Does that make me the oldest?
Nahh.... just kidding. I'm actually 16. While we're seeing who is the oldest, can anyone beat my 16? (Or my royal-flush for that matter?)

Tell me, since you've been to at least two concerts on this tour, are their jams improvised or what? What would be really cool for them to do is release a CD just full of some of their best live improvs. I'm listening right now to a King Crimson improv and love it. It'd be great if DT could do what these guys can do.

David Holsinger was the guest conductor for our all district band this year. You are right, Mr. Holsinger has some great tunes out there, although I do tend to think his works are a little OVER played by bands here.

Yes!! A mod... I wish I could figure out how to make these, they're incredibly hard to make because of the way the samples are set up. (but that is their advantage also...) Either way, a while back a friend of mine and I tried to make a Ytsejam mod... We got about 1/5 of the way done before we scrapped the project, but someone who knows how to make them could easily make a DT melody mod if they wanted to. Can anyone here make good mods?

Well.... as you can see I underlined the words matte kudasai but when the computer quoted it, it messed it all up. But yes, the name is just Matte Kudasai, and in my opinion is one of the most beatiful King Crimson songs they've done. Belew's voice is just so great also.

Heh! That would be great, though, originally, I wasn't even going to consider that (since I wanted Kev to know I appreciated those demos he's giving us and would not purport to take advantage of his kindness) but if he gives the thumbs up... he's in for a pile o' free copies when I run that particular disc.

"Good night"... it all seems so complex eh! Sou des.
