    La francais? Je la parle...
Je me souviendrai toujours le fraicheur de Novembre aussi, je pense que Mike
Portnoy se le souviendra aussi bien que nous.

Anyway...I just recently (redundant) picked up A Kick Into A Dream...It's
pretty good. The first two or three songs sound pretty bad, TOWHTSTS
sounds better tha it does on WDADU. JP goes crazy at the end of TTT. I
like the Awake stuuf, but neither vocals nor keyboard soloing can be
heard on 6:00. I'm glad Portnoy's drum solo is better this time. Another
Day is, however, almost completely ruined by a group of fans that cannot
sing. It sounds terrible. Also, Portnoy uses the questionable word at the
    end.

My favorite guitarists? In no particular order:
John Petrucci, Steve Morse, George Ochoa, Yngwie, Gary Hoey

    Howdy all,
Today's my first day off in 19 days, so I figured I should check my
e-mail...Yikes! There were 18 Ytsejams waiting for me since June 20th! I
decided to read the last two and save the others. Anyway, the point here
is that I haven't been around in awhile (I know y'all missed me ;) and
I've got some stuff to mention:

    1) Is anyone else as disappointed with the new Primus album (Tales from
the Punchbowl) as I am? To me it just seems really forced; I'm turned
off by it and if it hasn't started growing on me yet (it came out nearly
a month ago), I don't think it will. Any input is appreciated.

    2) InstruMENTAL II: Great CD! I don't know if I like it as much as the
first InstruMENTAL, but it certainly has its moments. If the YYZ cover
    wasn't on a Dream Theater CD, I wouldn't have known it wasn't Rush--and I
STILL have my doubts! The Metropolis demo is great; Another Won sounds
better than on the Majesty Demo (probably due to the lack of Chris
Collins), The Farandole is really cool! I've never heard any Talas songs
that I've been aware of, so I can't comment on it as compared to the
original. ACOS is great as usual; Stars is a pretty, quiet piece that
has to have been done during the Majesty period; Mission: Impossible is
of course, neato, but not as cool as the live one on Lost in the Sky
IMHO; Light Guitar Piece sums itself up rather well; Long Island Sound is
VERY 80s; and the 'Guitar Player' Spotlight II is good but IMHO lacks the
fresh sound of the first one. Also, I think Somewhere Under the Rainbow
is kind of gratuitous and overdone. That's my synopsis of InstruMENTAL II!

    3) Rising Power: Power for the People--11 words: I'm glad Mike Portnoy
decided to pursue other avenues of music!! Wow, is this CD cheesy! (I
don't mean to offend anyone who genuinely enjoys it, this just really
isn't my thing.) Standard-fare, early to mid-eighties hard rock; pretty
bad stuff, IMHO. And Peter Best is no lyricist: "You come home from a
day at school / You don't want to hear about any rules / You've had
enough discipline for one day / But someone's bound to get in your
way"--Whoa! :) Anyway, this CD is still worth the $25 for the pictures
of 16-18 year old Mike and his leather-and-spikes-clad bandmates, as well
as getting a listen to Portnoy's impressive playing at an early age.

    4) Last one: Okay, I gave out the Ytsejam e-mail address and instructions
how to get on the 'jam to a guy (whose name I never got) at the June 9th
Birch Hill show in NJ. I'm sorry I never got your name, but I know your
friend's name was James (the guy who had been to 21 DT shows before this
one and had skads of bootlegs and stuff) and he knew someone who had a
DAT of that (June 9) show. If you're out there in cyberspace reading
this, PLEASE e-mail me! I MUST have a copy of this show (as it was the
best live DT performance I've ever heard)! I know I've got a bunch of
stuff that James doesn't have, so maybe we could work out a trade. If
you don't remember, I was the one with the Nightmare Before Christmas
hat, Infectious Grooves t-shirt, glasses and red ponytail; I was amongst
those of you that 'snuck' backstage! In any case, if you got this
message, please e-mail me at: weyc9212@kutztown.edu
If anyone else has a copy of this show, please let me know; I MUST HAVE
IT!! Thanks; I hope to hear from you soon!

Sorry this post was so long!

    Hi!

When DT played here back in february my band had also got a gig the same
night. I missed both FW and the first DT songs. DT had an excellent
jazz-improv due to technical problems during PMU, does this exist on some
form of recording? Well, Swedish National Radio records a whole lot of
concerts nowadays, almost every day there's one hour-long performance.
The recording of DT's 2nd 1993 show ended up on 'Majestic Harmonies'. I'm
keeping an ear open for a recording of the latest show!

But, what I'd like to know is which songs did FW play? I wasn't a FW-fan
back then but now, thanks to you helpful jammers, I just love FW and I
would like to know what I missed!

    Thanks!

    Oh, one last thing:
Swedish TV5 did a 10-min interview with James and Mike a while back,
the interviewer asked why Kevin had left and they said all the things we
already know. But then there was the question: But did you feel that you
had to have another keyboard-player? Mike and James looked confused at
each other and said well, yes!

My band has always been confronted with the same problems, whenever we
played gigs with sound-guys unknown to us, the keys were completely
drowned. When we asked them to turn the keys up they usually looked all
    confused and asked why? ;-)

Well, now we're not together anymore, so I'm kindof looking for a new
    band...don't know if I'll find one :-(

    /Mats

    Hi you all!
Just a few things about DT playing Saarbruecken:

ACOS: Awesome.Very heavy in some parts (JP plays the whole thing
    with his 7-string.
A passage at the beginning reminds me of The Mirror, I don't know if this
is just because of the heavy 7-string sound, but lots of parts are based on the
    low B. (->The Mirror/Lie). No Fuck. At the first listen, I don't
remember they changed so much in the various parts of the song, they
just added 3 or 4 new parts (especially at the beginning of the song,
so that the song is longer now. The clean parts sound very dark on the
    low B, Cool!
Mike mentioned that there is a good chance that there will be 40(!)
minutes of the Ronnie Scotts gig on the "E.P." (seems that they will even
    beat their LatM "E.P.".

    Alice in Chains:
Again that AIC song "Rooster" just before the show, with the volume
turned up, like a "pre-intro" (Who knows what the funny "real" intro
was from?). Seems that they like AIC (me too!).

    Ok, bye for now,

    Tilman.

Oh man, are you going to give people the wrong impression! They sound
like Hawkind and Gong mostly, but w/o the silliness that I find
detracts from Gong. EXTREMELY cool, and the guitarist can shred!
They are all really good musicians: guitar, keys, bass, drums, flute
(but REAL spaced-out flute). The first time I heard the opneing
track, "Dots Thots" off of the _Live Underslunky_ album (which, btw,
is one of the best live albums EVER and a great place to start), I
thought "Where have you guys been all my life!"

They are prog but kind of a new type of prog.

But not neo-progressive (i.e. not like Marillion).

      Lots of
    > really weird sounds (guitar-synth, rainmaker, strange processor effects).
    > Try them out!

They're in a genre called neo-psychedelic or psych/prog. One of my
favorites. And they are absolutely incredible live, with one of the
best light shows I've ever seen. New album due out this fall. I
think most people here would like 'em, if you don't mind the
    spaciness.

    > CYNIC
    > Another pretty cool prog band. These guys are more on the heavier side
    > than DT. They kind of sound like Death only very prog. Sort of a
    > prog/death/fusion thing. Check them out also.

If they would just shitcan the singer (which I've heard they have
plans to do), I'ld listen to it more often, 'cause instrumentally,
it's quite good. Just hard to get past that ridiculous growling
    nonsense.

    > ALSO,
    > Someone tell me which Rush album to get, I have the YYZ one and Presto
    > but not all that impressed. Tell me which ones are most progressive (DT
    > style).

The most prog. one is probably Hold Your Fire, but it's not as
agressive. Their latest, Counterparts has quite a bit of heaviness on
it. Their earlier stuff is a lot heavier. Try 2112.

    HOW CAN YOU LIKE MANOWAR?!
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    Hello everyone,

This is really a reply to Aviad, and not a flame. Just a follow up :)

My CD and Album collection go way back, actually way, way, way back. I have
a pretty big collection by now. With Manowar it deals mainly with the
vocals and drums as opposed to lyrics. They have a hard and clean sound.

You think Manowar is bad, how about:
Racer-X, Exciter, Accept, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Zebra, UFO, Hellenback,
Agent Steel, Malice, Fates Warning, Raven, Loudness, and Warlord to name
    a few.

As for DT doing a cover of a Maiden song, I'd like to hear them play
"Phantom of the Opera" or "Sanctuary"

    Have a good day. Peace!

Another Ytse-fan de-lurks. :) I want to to answer some of the many
    open-
ended questions thrown out the last few weeks.

    1) What do I do for a living - I'm a Computer Programmer/Technician.
    Hope
to go back to school for my Masters' in the near future.

    2) First DT moment - Heard PMU on the radio, then saw the video on
    MTV. The
Napalm Death T-shirt caught my eye, it seemed out of place with the
    music.
I bought I&W shortly after and have been hooked ever since.

    3) Favorite DT moment - The first (and only) time I saw them live (so
    far).
I saw the first date on the "Waking Up The World" tour in Providence.
    Only
serious, debilitating injury will make me miss another show. :)

And to the person inquiring about stereo systems, I have one like
    your old
system right now: Kenwood 8060 Pro-Logic Receiver, Kenwood 6+1 CD,
    and
Bose 301's. Space limitations prevent me from expanding at present.
    I'm
moving soon, though, and an amp, EQ, and new speakers are high on my
    list.
I'm leaning toward either CV or Infiniti Sterling Series.

Yeah, I've got both Who Man Four Says (geddit?) and her follow-up which
is called She. WMFS is excellent. Really sparse arrangements (put
together with the late Mick Ronson) and a _very_ sinister undertone to
the whole thing. Gonna Get Close To You is on this (it was hearing the
QR version that prompted me to search out the original), as is Wait For
An Answer which was covered by Heart on Bad Animals. She (the album, not
the singer :) is more commercial but still has that threatening feeling
    running through it.

As Jaime said, she's a Canadian artist so Canada's probably the best
place to start looking although I'd assume that both albums are now long
    deleted.

    Hello list,

Well, today I finally got my Subcon. (No fault of Mike's - I failed to send
the $ forever) In tradition of reviewing the tracks, I give you my opinion
    (key word)
of the first 6 tracks. Maybe later I will do the rest.

    1. "Vigil" - To me this song sounds like (if it didn't have samples) an
obscure Rainbow song, Weiss Heim (or hiem, can I spell?) that was on the
Final Vynal (told you I couldn't spell today) cd.

    2. Change of Seasons - Pretty cool. I already had a tape of this song so it
    was no
big shock. Why does James remind of the singer from Europe at times on this
    track?

    3. O Holy Night - ok. Charlie we hardly knew ya.

    4. Carry That Weight - Sounds like something off of "Never Say Die" by
    Black
Sabbath (side two - if you own this, you know what I am talking about.)
    John's
sound is somewhat reminiscent of Brian May on this track.

    5. Don't Look Past Me - ok. I am really glad that DT doesn't sound like
    this
anymore. Yeach! Pop-prog. I kinda liked John Arch's demo of this better.
(But then I liked John Arch's version of the Killing Hand better than
    Labrie's...)

    6. Wanted DOA - Should be DOA - Dead on Arrival, not Dead or Alive

Overall, I am on my second listen to the whole thing. My overall impression
is favorable. Feel free to disagree with my associations to other bands.

Hey all! I was wondering if anyone here has figured out any of the guitar parts to "To Live Forever", especially the intro. If anyone has learned it and has been able to tab it out, please e-mail it too me and/or post it on the jam. Thanks a bunch!

A few digests back, THE JACK wrote this: >Hello to everyone, >I'm from Rimouski, Quebec, Canada and here we are hardcore fans of Dream >Theater >this my first message here and I'm not a perfectly english >speaking.......but I know very well the musik language of Dream >Theater......The greatest band in the universe!

Welcome to the list, Jack! Nice to hear of another jammer from that good old province of Quebec... I myself am one of a small group of hardcore DT fans from Rouyn-Noranda, in case the name rings any bells. I'm currently living in Ottawa where (to contribute to an ongoing thread) I work for a computer phone support company between two years of studying computer science at the U of O. French is my native language too, so I can relate. But I guess we all speak the same language anyway (beside English).

Another thread: I got into DT after reading an article a friend of mine wrote for the student newspaper back home. There's no way any radio station there would have played some Dream Theater; it's a rather small town, and the main station played mostly dance music. Anyway, the article convinced me to buy Images & Words, which me and my brother loved. He got his friends to listen to it, word spread around, and there are possibly more DT fans over there than in any other town that size...

An aside: yes, The Crow is great. I bought the trade paperback and I heartily recommend it (not to the squeamish, though). The ending still tends to baffle me, though... And for those of you who aren't too sick of Batman, there's Arkham Asylum, a trade paperback with great painted art by Dave McKean and a twisted story about madness by Grant Morison.

Salutations to JennieBear, whom I met on IRC recently. It seems this #ytsejam channel is working. Don't remember who first mentioned it, but it's a good idea.

Finally, going back to The Jack's letter: >Do you speak french? I want to tell you something; Les marchants de reve >font de la musique divine, je ne pourrais plus m'en passe! >If someone translate........tell to all others :-) ) ) ) ) ) Si ca peut te faire plaisir... It means "The dream merchants make divine music, I couldn't live without it!" (approximately).

Enough for now, this is getting long. Farewell...

    Eric

    Hi!

I had no chance to write about the german mini-Ytsecon in Saarbruecken until now, and I think everything is said already. Oh, I was the one with the Big Mac. I was holding my marker which was used during our "signing session", so I just HAD to say that...

About the new ACOS: All the parts I loved in the live version are still there, I just need to get used to the new vocal lines.

Andrew Keegan asked about the CARPE DIEM tattoo on Mike Portnoy's arm. It is not new, he got it last year. His newest one is on the other arm, from the Japan tour. Some Japanese letters... "What does it mean?" - "Mikey!"

Thanks to all making this possible. See you again next time!

    Hey Fellow-Jammers,

This will be my second or third post now, so please forgive me if my questions or remarks have been passing 'ytsejam' before. My main question is: how can I get an 'Ytsejam t-shirt'? If you know the answer, please e-mail me. Let me tell me something about myself. I'm 19 years old and I'm a second year student in physics. I've been playing the guitar for about 4 years now and I worship Vai, Satriani & Petrucci (random order). After I've seen DT in Utrecht (Holland) i've been convinced that DT is technically the best band in the world. NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT! About a month ago I bought the guitar-tab book from I&W .... it really was a setback. I thought I could play quite descent, but seeing what John does on this album really shocked me. Guess I have to practice harder. Well, that's it for today. Bye all

P.S.: Has anyone seen Vai's new hairdo .... it's really cool IMHO

#walking the fine line between pagan and christian# (Vai, 'for the love of God')
