----------------------------------------------------------------------

** 4.23 What is "Caught In A Web" about?

James LaBrie:

"...a person that's... it's not male or female, it could be
either. And it's dealing with a person who has suppressed their
feelings for so long and has finally had enough of it and feels that
the only way that they can really live life to it's fullest is to live
from the inside out. And that's basically what this person has come
to terms with. And they're sick of society inducements and they feel
the only way that they can go on with life is to live it the way they
feel is the truth..."

** 4.24 What is "Lie" about?

According to Moore, it's connected to the theme of The Mirror.
Betrayal and disillusionment are the main ideas. There is a lot of
religious symbolism in the lyrics.

        For example:

"At the bottom of a lake, it's a hundred degrees I can't breathe"
= Lake of Fire / Hell

"You tell me 'bout your two more coming" = The Second Coming

** 4.25 What is "Space-Dye Vest" about? How does Kevin come up with
this stuff?

In Kevin Moore's words from a Japanese Interview:

"It was inspired by... I was looking through a clothing catalog & saw
a picture of a girl modeling this piece of clothing called a space-dye
vest. And, so, I fell in love with her [laughs] for some strange
reason & so the minute I did that, the minute I was just like obsessed
w/this person, I was like, 'why am I doing that?' & I noticed that I
was doing it a lot lately. And I think the prime reason that I was
doing that, and this is what I figured out at the time, was that I had
just come out of a relationship where I'd gotten dumped, basically,
and so I think the situation was that I wasn't finished giving all
that I was ready to give, so I was just, like, throwing it around, you
know, just aiming it in different directions. It was a total case of
projection. And this song is just trying to sort it out & just kind
of admitting that I'm just kind of lost. So it's kind of a dark song.
It was very cathartic though."

        From Jennifer Albert (airdance@aol.com)

The first sample in SDV is from the Merchant/Ivory film "A Room With A
View". The complete passage says, "...he's the sort who can't know
anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a woman
is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at, like a
painting or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He
doesn't want you to be real, or to think, or to live. He doesn't love
you. But I love you. I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas
and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms...it's our last chance."
These lines are spoken by actor Julian Sands' character, George
Emerson. In this pivotal scene, he's trying to convince the woman he
loves, Lucy Honeychurch (played by Helena Bonham-Carter), who is
engaged to be married to someone else, that she's making a horrible
mistake and that she truly belongs with him instead.

Another interesting connection between SDV and "A Room With A View" is
that Kevin based most of the song around a chord progression that's
actually from the background music in movie! It only appears a couple
of times in very short sections, but it's *definitely* the same chord
progression that Kevin used in SDV.

** 4.26 What is "Lifting Shadows off a Dream" about?

John Myung:

"...that song is more or less just reflecting the duality that exists
between a man and a woman; the spiritual side of the relationship &
how they both can compliment one another." (Japanese Radio Interview)

4.27 Anyone notice that "Erotomania" contains snippets of all the
songs on the first half of Awake?

        Yes.

4.28 Who sings backup vocals on "The Silent Man?"

        John Purdell (Awake's producer)
        John Petrucci sings them live.

Hello,

Compilation Tapes
-----------------
Well, I finally finished all of the free compilation tapes I promised
certain people on the list. If you don't have yours by April 4 or 5th
let me know, believe as of today that all twenty are mailed out.
I'd like to thank any of your who went out and bought some of the albums
because of these tapes. All of the small label and independant bands
need your support so they can keep making quality music.

If you are interested in hearing a customized compilation tape of
progressive rock or metal bands mail me mbacko1@umbc.edu and if you
cover the postage and send me a tape I will help you out. E-mail me for
details and a list of the bands and albums I have.

Ytsecon
-------
I'd like to again thank Jeff and Babs (especially Babs for the idea) for
spending their time on the Ytsecon in NYC, I know this must be a
tremendous effort. I was also wondering what the agenda is for the con.
Will it be tape trading, collectables, live music, etc. I am just curious.
I'd definitely like to see the three things I listed. I will probably
either take a drive up to NYC for the first time or fly in by myself. I
really don't want to be terribly surprised. <grin>

Later,

Mike

Why does it suck?? Just because QR is not touring with some other similar
prog-metal band, such as hmmmm..... Dream Theater?? Give QR a break,
isn't this the same band that brought Suicidal Tendencies with them on
their last US tour? Give them some credit for open-mindedness.

This is the same kind of bullshit attitude that went on over at the
Type O Negative mailing list; everyone (with a few exceptions) threw a
fit over TON touring with such a 'wussy' and 'past their prime' band. Why
doesn't everyone just cut it out with all the juvenile shit, go support
their band, and maybe get turned on to something new at the same time.

I'm a huge TON fan (they're second in my book, right behind DT) but I'm
not really into QR (I don't hate them , I just never ran out and got any
of their albums), yet I'm really looking forward to the show.

Now if Type O Negative could only open for Dream Theater :)

Hello again, everyone. I have arrived back from Spring Break with a slew
of questions on my mind, many relating to things that have probably been
covered many times on this list, so feel free to e-mail me with any
possible answers, rather than clutter up the list with old news.

Congrats to the FAQ crew for doing such a detailed job! The only problems
I saw were a few of the dates, such as IAW going gold in January of 1995,
and Awake being not only recorded but released during 1995!

1. Is there a definite track listing on the forthcoming EP for "A Change
Of Seasons?" I wonder about them putting "To Live Forever" on it,
considering Baron & Purdell already recorded it with the boys on the
single for "Lie." Does anyone agree with me that Prater would be a good
choice of producers since ACOS is from DT's earlier days? Prater could do
a really good job, I just wish he'd get rid of the midi-triggers!

2. To BABS: is there a set date/place for the now-infamous Ytsecon? With
any luck, that title will soon be followed by a year. Ex: Ytsecon '96,
Ytsecon '97, etc.

3. I recently heard the Winter Rose show from Toronto, and was absolutely
blown away by the vocals! James kicked ass even before Dream Theater!!
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows if any albums exist by this band
on cassette or cd. Did they even ever record an album? Do they have demo
releases on cassette-only? Or do they have seven albums that went gold and
I just wasn't in Toronto at the time?!

4. On the subject of James' previous works, does anyone know if Coney
Hatch ever released an album? Or if not a full-length in-studio
recording, do they have any live material floating around? Demos?

5. Are the fabled Ytsejam t-shirts still around? If not, are any more ever
going to be made?

6. This one has been getting me for quite some time, and sorry if anyone
feels like this is dredging up old material, but... Does anyone have the
slightest inkling of what "Under A Glass Moon" is about?

Thanks for any info/input.

Some of the dates of SECTION 1 should be fixed. It said that I&W went gold in Jan 1995 and that should be 1994, I think. Also, it is not yet OCT 1995. Most -of the years are wrong. I just thought I would mention it.

I don't know for sure about an album, but I do remember seeing a video of theirs on MuchMusic once. So, there probably is an album kicking around somewhere.

I saw someone say that they got into Marillion because of DT, and I just can't help but post all the bands that I have gotten into because of DT.

I picked up I&W after reading a review in the local paper here, I had never heard of any of these bands prior to DT, or the YtseJam. Maybe I owe credit to the YJ rather than DT for getting me into these bands, but hey, that's a formality :) Here's the bands:

Fates Warning, Crimson Glory, Marillion (of course), Watchtower, +Live+, Helloween and Lethal (the last 2 I wasn't too exicited about, but they count). Plus, I'd never been into boots before reading the list. This may not seem like a whole lot, but when you add in all the costs of their cd's that I have, well (math break).... comes out to something like around $390 - $400.

These bands are getting pretty good support from just word of mouth, eh?

Hi all, long time no talk on this board! I just had to let everyone know this! I got married a few weeks ago and we honeymooned in Monterey (Northern California near San Jose). Here is the story: I walked into a comic book shop looking for old comics and collectibles wearing my Dream Theater T-shirt. The owner of the store noticed this and asked me if I worked for that Theater. I told him that I am here on vacation and that it is actually a band named after the Dream Theater. Funny thing is, The Dream Theater that Mr. Howard Portnoy got the name form is in Monterey. Well I decided to visit this place and wouldn't you know, I was standing in front of this monument! It is a movie theater, kind of cool looking from the outside. It also has a logo painted under the marquee of a lady with long hair looking like she is floating through space. I have some snapshots of it and as soon as I get them developed, I will scan them and have them uploaded! Just a little trivia for you DT buffs! Tony K :{)

I appreciate that other, related bands and musicians are discussed in the YTSEJAM digest. I've been able to find great music here; it's been difficult finding good, new, smart progressive tunes here in Minneapolis, especially now, without ZRock and Headbanger's Ball.

I am wondering if any of you have heard of a band named Lethel. They put out an album on Metal Blade in 1990 or '91 titled "Programmed." Last I heard, they had new material ready to record, and Metal Blade dropped them. They are truely a fantastic band - very Queensrychesque (i.e Rage for Order), but with a heavier edge. Programmed ranks in my top five(ish) metal albums, with the likes of Dt's Awake and Images and Words, QR's Rage for Order, and Fates' Perfect Symmetry. Does anyone know if they are under a different name, have a new album/label, anything? I've been wondering for years.

Thanks,

Hey, finally caught up on my reading. I have a few things to say. DONT BASH ON AOLERS! Airdance(Jen) sent me a really nice response to my letter I sent about Kev's demos, and I must say that all of the AOLers I've talked with are pretty cool. Besides, it wasn't an AoLer (DUH). Look before you leap, guys. Remember SloppyJoe69? Duh...

Metropolis is illegal to listen to and drive with. So is Take The Time. I got pulled over one night while I was listening to it. I've told about this before. HEH! It made me speed (all of that double bass tapping on my accellerator.)

Funny, DT is making a boom in my small cowtown home. They play The Silent Man at least three times a day, and it's in our home town top ten. As a matter of fact, it debuted at number 4! Maybe a trend is starting! See ya later. I gotta go. (I'm sending my money off for those things soon, I promise!) See ya!

I've always wondered this, since the day I got Awake: What's up with the cut between Voices and The Silent Man. My hubby keeps saying that we should send radio talk show host Tom Leykis an "Awake" CD... Very different from most of the talk show hosts currently on the air... Anyhow, his opening theme music happens to be *Metallica*. Thanks to the list (and a.r.m.p.) I've also tried Fates, Helloween, and Cynic (I hear Live on the radio all the time). I have all of the Adler Fates albums and I put the band in my top 5 list of favorite bands (plus I got to meet and party with them after the DT show in Dec).

As for Helloween, I browsed through a few of their albums in the bin and settled on the compilation The Best, the Rest, the Rare to be safe. I really like ~ 90% of the songs on there, especially "Halloween" (one of the best progressive metal songs I've yet heard). > These bands are getting pretty good support from just word of mouth, eh? > > Paul

Yes, but probably not the support their labels would like to see.

The worst music to listen to while driving is Pantera, especially after a hard day at work.

TSC refers to The Second Coming of Christ, the beginning of The Millenium, and so on... foretold in scripture. *That's* the religious symbolism. The lyrical interpretation seems legit. Can anyone offer some alternatives?

:) You must be way out of the mainstream. That was Metallica's bigee a few years ago that first put them at #1 on the Billboards charts. Its Enter Sandman (and in my opinion at fitting title for the entire album, Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz, but that's just my opinion :) ), off the black album. > Jen > > P.S. But one liners are so much cooler. Not to mention modest.

I hear you. I really like the style...

You can't hear half of it unless it's loud! I hear you on HOggarth mumbling... (I have a hard time hearing him... :) )

I sent for a Marillion/Fish FAQ from arastar.com, and it had something in it about the song _Brave_ and what inspired it, I don't remember exactly what though... (I can send that part to you if you want, or you could just get the whole FAQ, either I or Ken Bibb (who told me) could tell you how.

I will probably soon join the Marillion mailing list, to find out about other Marillion if nothing else...

Jammers,

I couldn't resist with everyone posting about bands they were led to by DT.

I was wondering if any one has heard Voivod's "The Outer Limits" I picked it up a few months ago and really like it. It gets just about as much play as DT. Any comments on this or any other Voivod releases are very welcome. Others have said that "The Outer Limits" is much differrent then their other releases.

Anyways my comments on "The Outer Limits". I think the music is well composed and some what techincal. The album is a concept album about alien beings. And there is good emphasis keys throughout the album and one song lasts 17 min. The one thing I did not like is sampled drums. But I think that helps convey the "spacey" feel of the music.

It is an excellent album over all, I would definately recommend it. Besides the last I sae it at Best Buy was for $9.88.

Bad. I have Home Sweet Home (LILI pt2, I believe). The only reason I hang on to it is because it has James singing OAMOT.
