After hearing the new version of ACOS, I understand why they left
out Please Don't Go. It just doesnt fit with the rest of the lyrics.
The Subcon version of ACOS seems to be about an end to a
relationship (A change of lovers?). Thus, in the end, the main
character of the song is very distraught and desperate. That is why
he/she is yelling Please don't go.
The new version ends much differently. The main character is
passing away and he/she is urging the son to 'Seize the Day', live life
to its fullest. 'Please Dont go' would not have fit in.
I agree with everyone else though, I miss that part of the song.
But, oh well, it's on the Subcon version. But, to me, these two
versions are very different lyrically. One version ends in misery and
desparation and the other ends in hope and fulfillment.

    Just a thought,
                    Rick

It's there, James just doesn't say "Please don't go." But since he just
    doesn't say it, I do. Now everything's OK :).

Um...No. He should have said, the first time, what he did in his response.
What he says in his repsonse makes sense (and I hold no ill will toward
him) but as was said, Rush is a major influence on DT as well as a favorite
among YtseJammers and to come out with a statement like that deserved the
responses it got. Thanks for the response Jose and, again, no hard
feelings. Language does not seem to be a problem BTW.

Hmm. I don't know if I'll get the box set. I heard it was $60. I do like
Yes. Have almost all the albums. Did Trevor Rabin play the keyboard solos?
I remember watching the video and ol' Trev's tapping on Starship Trooper
(gag). I was never much into Trevor. I always liked Steve Howes versions of
    Steve Howe's parts :).

wow.....how about that crazy acos? too bad i never heard the "original",
whatever that may be. i listened to the album from the last song up, and it
hit hard. "in the flesh" (which strangely has gotten no mention yet) was just
awesome. everything seems to have been done very very precise and just
..exact. i know someone mentioned that it could have sounded more lively-
    maybe a point.

so in the tune acos itself, i heard erotomania, slayer, metallica, ozzy,
david lee roth's skyscraper (don't ask, but it reminds me of it at approx.
5:30) and a lot of stuff that i have yet to discover. although i am no
drummer, i thought the snare sounded pretty cool. thin, yes, but i can't
think of it with a heavier snare sound. it reminds me of a marching band
snare drum. spaeking of marching bands, long island has quite a few marching
bands- anyone know if portnoy was ever in a high school marching band? the
piano at 2:35 was really cool. good job, derek.

speaking of hearing erotomania, it makes one wonder how old some of their
    songs actually are.

someone also asked when people first heard of dt. i had just signed on to
columbia house, and i was thumbing thru the pages, and i saw "images and
words" and it said "hot progressive metal". so i said what the hell? 3 years
later, i feel very very lucky.

anyone catch petrucci at the ngsw clinic in ct with steve bailey? wasn't it
awesome? can't wait to see the jp model guitar out.

still looking for anyone interested in a copy of consciously unreal. a trade
or $$ would be cool. will not look for an exorbitant amount. anyone in ny to
dub subconscious? now it's like "i HAVE to hear it!!"

well, that's about it. one more thing, if anyone knows when queensryche's
cd-rom is coming out, that would be cool. thanks dave kobayashi.

After listening to my new copy of ACOS I found myself in an I&W
mood. So I put it in my CD player and started flipping through the liner
notes. I noticed that they gave thanks to the band Watchtower. I've heard
that this band is very good, and have looked for their CD's at record
conventions and import stores etc. but have not been able to find them.
I figure if DT is giving them thanks maybe somebody here would know
something about them. Anybody have the album _Control and Resistance_ , or
_Energetic Dissassembly_? I would appreciate any info, reviews, etc., anybody
is willing to give me. Also, anybody willing to dub one or both? I'd be
willing to return the favor with something else.
Also, anybody heard of a band called Angra? They have an album out
called _Angel's Cry_ which is incredible. A must for all prog. metal fans.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Sounds like a grade school "How I spent my summer vacation" assignment
    or something....
My story: heard 'Pull Me Under' on the Radio, the New Music Review on
104.7 WIOT Toledo....few weeks later, same program, same time 9after
midnight), heard 'Take the Time' and that's what *really* got me....
went out looking for this band, but no one had heard of it, Including
music stores....of course, at that time I probably only went to
Musicland or Recordtown or other crappy music stores of that ilk.....I
kept asking around, and found that a friend, who I had classes (HS) with
every day, had the disc....got a dub, and the rest, as they say........

pretty standard, except for the fact it was TTT rather than PMU that
hooked me....I hear a lot more PMU stories

    Hey folks -

I am now receiving the digests here at the computer lab at college,
since I got sick of AOL fucking around with the format of the digest and
sending it to me as a MIME-encoded file that I have to download and read as
a text file from File Manager. Since I have a free account here, it made
sense to switch. Obviously that means I will be replying to anything in the
    Jam from here.

However, my Maraya007@aol.com address is still valid. You can send
me mail at either address, but I only check this once every few days, since
it requires me to trek across campus and up two flights of stairs and hope
there's a computer available, so if you need an immediate response, you're
better off writing to me at AOL.

    Greetings fellow jammers..

Well the day we have been waiting one has come and gone and I wonder how
many of us spent the night listening to ACOS? I know my neighbors got a
good taste of it (250 watt Yamaha amp / Bose 901's) as from the moment I
got back from Best Buy, that cd played at something approaching maximum
volume. Needless to say, everyone in the neighborhood heard me. Pissed a
few of them off I do believe. Anyway, this is the first time I have heard
ACOS as I didn't get a chance to get Subcon due to finacial difficulties
and have yet to find DoE or anyhting else with ACOS on it. I absolutely
fell in love with this song on the first listen. There were so many
things I liked about it I don't know where to begin so I won't. The
covers I thought were also great. By the way, Perfect Strangers (the DP
version) kicks serious ass for those who want to know, buy that disc, y
ou won't regret it. I really don't have a bad thing to say about the EP
as a whole and just want to thank the boys in DT for putting this out for
    us, the fans.

Yes Hairball, I do read all of your engineering spiels. Being a closet
audiophile and night student in EE, these things are of interest and
    informative, if not amusing.

I got into DT much like many others on this list probably did, heard PMU
on the radio, then went out and bought I&W. Music just hasn't been the
    same since.

One last thing (thank God)...I am looking for a cd copy of DoE. If anyone
has one that they want to get rid of or knows of a place where I can find
    one, email me personally. Thanks.

OK so the subj. is awful, but it's better than another
"ACOS (what else?)"....even though that's what this is :)
I've given it 5 listens, in various states of concentration, and the
verdict: I like the DoE version *a lot* better....

An interpretation here, on the "Please don't go"" omission:
the DoE version makes it seem as though the woman walks out on the
protagonist....but he still loves her, hence the "please don't go", and
lines like "Love's....a state of mind that goes on forever", WHILE AT
THE SAME TIME reviling her for leaving in lines like "I Stood in the
rain....took the blame for us" and "Promiscuous promiser..."

In the new ACOS, i think DT (or Mike Portnoy) changed the scenario
Instead of the woman walking out and having the protagonist fight
conflicting thoughts about his feelings for her, this time she DIES on
the guy, and his struggle is against a) himself/self-pity and b) the
overbearing SYMPATHIES of people consoling him.....part V:Another
World's lyrics say to me : "Quit stringing me up, quit analyzing our
relationship, QUIT ANALYZING HOW I MIGHT BE FEELING, i don't need your
    sympathy to survive"
btw, it's my favorite part of the new ACOS

The rest of this is an ACOS 'review', nothing new here--i put the
interpretation above because that's what i wanted you all to read :)

As for ACOS, on the whole:
The slowness of the new version just doesn't sit well with me. Add on
top of that James' understated delivery........

I did like the "The Darkest of Winters" and "Another World" sections, so
it's not like a total loss, and the covers will ensure that the disc
stays in rotation for a long time to come....maybe the new ACOS will
grow on me.....the big medly, i liked especially...they picked some of
my favorite old songs.....(carry on..., Bohemian rhapsody)

Here's 2 more cents toward that dollar:

     * ACOS is absolutely magnificent!! *

I'm SO glad that DT &co. deigned to record it for little ol' us, let alone
give us credit! Thanks, guys! The slower tempo doesn't bother me at all.

I know all the covers except the Dregs - I particularly like Perfect
Strangers. The original is awesome, DT's is just a little awesome-er (?).
Same with the others, IMO. James has such a great voice, and the others
are such great players. Dang! And a special hoo-rah for Derek. Admittedly,
I was concerned about Kevin's replacement. Them's big shoes to fill!
I think Derek did a great job, and I'm very much looking forward to their
    next release. Amen.

    Hello Jammers,

ACOS thoughts: (after falling asleep during funeral for a friend...
ughh... I was tired last night when I put it in)

    ACOS (The epic Song)
    --------------------
    - I have to agree that the intro is great. I like the acoustic with an
attitude thing that John P. has achieved.
    - Erotomania theme occurs early in the piece, this is cool.
    - I love the power in the lyrics Innocence and Carpe Diem. These parts
are much better than earlier versions of the song.
    - Another World is the weakest part of the song, they would have been
better off going with the lyrics from the Dance of Eternity version.
I don't like how the lyrics fit with the music, and I agree with an
earlier post that John Petrucci is conveying all of the emotion during
       this part.
    - Crimson Sunset is an excellent ending to the piece, I figured it was going
to have an acoustic outtro as well, but it ends with a bang.

    Covers:
    - Sound quality is excellent, and if they had put my favorite covers on
there I would be happier (Yes medley, Easter, Tears, Winter, In the
Dead of Night), though Perfect Strangers is great to have.

I would like to again thank the band and Eastwest for bowing to the will
of the fans and putting out this disk. ACOS has now fallen into DT
history and is no longer a lost gem that many have heard of, but haven't
    actually heard.

    Cygnus comments
    ---------------
I have only listened to it once, but I thought the sound quality
was really good, especially for a boot from that era. I don't like the
fadeouts, I would prefer the cuts. (Just because I am used to them on
tapes I have) Overall I think it is a quality project and definitely
better than most boots. Mike, you just need to be more exact and not
hype it so much, it is not better than R'n'R 92 or Pinkpop, but it is
    definitely good.

Second, I and two of my friends went to the local Zip's Record Exchange

Lastly, someone mentioned having trouble with DT Interactive on the

First, a lot of people seem to think that the new ACoS is too slow. Now,
I've only heard the "original" version once or twice, but I've got a
theory as to why the studio version is slower. You musicians out there -
especially non-drummers, 'cause they always deny this sort of thing -
might agree with me. It has been my experience that most drummers play
faster live than they do at rehearsal or in recording. Just about every
drummer I've jammed with just flies live. Like, if the band has a
20-minute set, and we rehearse it to 19:45. Then, when the show comes,
we play for, like, 17 minutes. Come on, you've all been there. Anyway,
    maybe that's what happened.

Second, I think Mike's snare sounds cool as shit. Very few people use
the piccolo snare any more. It kinda gives the drums a Primus-y feel.
    Very... unique.

Third, I understand that Mike might be reading this soon. So, Mike, a
friend of mine is trying to get into the Long Beach F.D. Anything you can
    do? :)

Why did I become a DT fan? I live on Long Island. Good enough?

    About Derek-
Lots of you keep saying that "I like Kevin's sound better" or "Derek
doesn't solo like Kevin" or "Kevin got this sound..." Well, tough shit.
Kevin's not in the band anymore. And Derek wouldn't be in the band if
the other guys didn't think he was top notch, now would he? This all
reminds me of "Sammy just doesn't sing like DLR." (Roth couldn't sing,
anyway.) What we've got on our hands is the new direction of DT. They
like it, and they have the balls to record it and tour with it. That's
    enough in my book.
    <Flame-avoidance tactics 101 - read on, Mr. "I hate Rush">
It's not that. I love Kevin's style. He plays keys like nobody else.
I'll miss his input, esp. lyrically. But there's nothing that you or I
can do about it, except bite our nails and smoke our cigarettes and pace
our floors and drink our beers and wait to see how his writing influences
the overall sound of the band.
That reminds me - in the liner notes, it says that the music for ACoS was
written by DT. Doesn't that infer that Derek helped write it, and Kevin
    didn't?

One more thing - Where is Derek from? I'd be real happy if he's from the
Island, but I don't think he is. Anyone? Bueller?

I didn't know that there was a voxalist in Rage against the Machine. He
just screams. I don't think he is even trying to sing. If he is, he's in the
wrong business and should go back to rapping. Don't flame, I like Rage. Their
music is interesting, even if I don't care about their lyrics.

Well, since I have only heard the version of ACOS on ACOS, I guess I should
ask this. Besides Subconscious, is there another version of ACOs around? On a
good-sounding bootleg? On a CD single, (yeah, who am I kidding)? Someone tell
me where I can find a good-sounding version of Pre-ACOS ACOS.

I just want to thank everyone who responsed to my question about how
you became interested in Dream Theater. I found it really interesting the
way everyone got into them; considering that they're hardly on the radio.
My reaction on A Change of Season is undescribable. I never heard
the song before until I bought this CD. I guess the best words I can use
to describe it is it's just mind boggling. I find this album amazing.

Death metal kicks major ass - and as for saying that they have no
talent - where are your ears dude - below all that speed and growling
there is something (for the good bands that is!). Your friend admitting
that they have no talent - must be listening to the shit bands - maybe
    just a trendy death fan.

Some of these musicians are very technical and very good. Just
listen to some of the tracks of the latest DEATH album - some of the
songs have a feel that remind me of DT songs, except the guitars have a
different distortion and are heavier. DEATH is definately one band that
reminds me of DT (the solos/arrangements/feel). What about MORBID ANGEL -
    what arrangements - gods!!!

I know it's real early in the stages of ACOS being released, but is anyone
keeping track or does anyone know how well this album is selling? The
reason I ask is because a lot of my friends who are DT fans (and either are
not, or used to be, on this list) had absolutely NO IDEA that this was even
coming out [We have the assinine radio stations and eMTyV to thank for
promoting the good word.....NOT......ASSHOLES!!]. Fortunately, I passed on
the good word to a lot of people. I'm curious to what extent this will
sell, as compared to I&W or even AWAKE. Well, we'll just have to see......

By the way, I commend our "super-heros" on a job-well-done! ACOS is superb!!

Alright, so no one else plays like Mike, except Mike...quit the deluge of
mail. <g> Yes, I was skimming...and I read that one message *twice* to be
sure I read it correctly the first time. (Ask Keith - I do read faster than
most people, but, usually, the speed does not adversely affect my retention
or comprehension.) To many of you this matters very little, but I've started
taking my laptop to work so that I can catch up on my e-mail at lunch...Babs
knows how important it is for some of us to eat regularly (or else it's "pass
the orange juice" time <g>) because we get "weird" otherwise. :) So, I don't
think my lunch had hit my bloodstream yet when I was reading that particular
    'jam...

Glad to find out that ACoS was released yesterday, versus the 26th in the
U.S. I was really shocked that the Virgin megastore does not have it yet -
they have everything - but, when I called, the sales clerk was actually
familiar with Dream Theater to some extent. (She said something like, "I
know that they released something recently...") Have yet to fully listen to
it, although Keith and I listened to a couple of the covers and about ten
minutes of ACoS itself before nodding off. Maybe I just can't accept anyone
else but Pink Floyd performing it, but "In the Flesh?" just sounded odd to my
    ears...

Still need to get around to writing a blurb about the real Dream Theater, but
I'm behind in a lot of things right now. :/

Seriously folks, I just listened to the new cd, and fee kind of dissapointed that the really cool neoclassical shred part around the 15 minute mark had been taken out and replaced with something more slower, and dare I say it. . . CONSERVATIVE!? Don't get me wrong, the cd is really cool, but I have to admit, i kind of like the live version (of ACOS) better, part wise. James' harmonizing is interesting, and the song itself is good, but I REALLLY wish that Petrucci had gone a bit more nuts, melodic wise.

Well... 2 comments to say for now...

First off, on the missing sections of ACoS (Please don't go, and what IMO is even more strange w/o is the "I stood outside in the rain for us" section... I don;'t know if they fit the new theme behind ACOS... I mean, the older version, as someone mentioned, was more about losing a loved one (well, not really losing a loved on, but losing contact, I guess) whereas the new lyrics seem to be supporting more of a loss of oneself... I think that while I will _ALWAYS_ scream "Please don't go" and start thinking "I stood outside..." it wouldn;t fit... I also find myself always thinking of the samples from the Citron aud version... especially around the 19:00 mark on the new one... (look to your lonlyness... ??? by your master, etc...)

One other thing to mention is that when I went to Newbury's to buy the CD, I discovered that they now have a web site to order CDs from (www.newbury.com) and when I checked it out today, they do have ACOS on there as a new release (no other DT material, although they only have relativly new releases for everyone...)

    Hey all...

First of all, I would like to thank everyone wholeheartedly who has been contributing information regarding Cynic (Portal- thanx Carmen) and Alex Lifeson. Very cool...I would be lost without the information gurus on the 'Jam. :) Does anyone know anything about what Cynic/Portal is doing? All I can contribute is the fact that Sean Malone (bass/chap) is not in the band. (He's doing work on several other projects, one of which is supposed to come out on a GFTPM compilation cd soon.)

Secondly, FATES WARNING.......I have been trying to access old web pages, and the majority of the responses I have received inform me that they are no longer-the pgs. (What a crappy sentence.) Anyway, if anyone has ANY boots or rare FW, I would GREATLY appreciate any e-mail regarding this, or hell, if anyone just wants to talk about FW, that would be cool.

Lastly, and hopefully sans flames, :) ACoS....Hmmm, well, I can honestly say that overall I was not disappointed. The ONLY problem I personally have is with MP's snare sound...it is almost distracting at times. To me, IMHO, it doesn't really fit. Anyway, please no flames...his kick and the rest of his kit sound excellent, and of course...he plays flawlessly.

Anyway, that's all. On with the 'Jam.

    Aaron

P.S. Anyone else think Derek looks like Dave Navarro on the back cover? :)

Well I am absolutely speechless. After five listens, this song has completely blown me away. In my opinion ACOS is the very essence of why I love Dream Theater. Music, lyrics, imagery, everything. It has a level of sophistication that the 'normal' listener will not be able to comprehend. Which is why this album is so great. I do not see it getting much airplay. It was simply done for the fans.

If anyone from the band reads this, "Thank You!"
