    Hi everyone!
     In response to heath augustover who asked how everyone got into dt, here's
    my story:I usually listent to a station that plays hard rock/metal when i
    sleep. Some nights i would awaken and here the last minute or two of a song.
    It was always the same song, and i couldn't figure out what song it was, or
    who it was by. This went on for a couple weeks untill one day i went into
    musicland and randomly picked out a cd (i do this once or twice a week) DT's
    images and words just happened to catch my eye. So i bought it and played it
    right away in my car's cd player. Pull Me Under started playing and i kept
    thinking "this sounds familiar" Then it reached the first "pull me under,
    pull me under", my blood went cold and pulled over right away. This was the
    song that i always kept waking up for! Ever since, i've been a big fan.

    Hey all, again:
            Just read Ryan's post about what "his" Best Buy's have on DT. I just
    visited the new one in Fullerton, CA, on the corner of Harbor and Imperial Hwy.
    They have a pretty good selection... 2 WDADU, 1 Silent Man single, no Lie
    singles (aw, schucks, but hey!...I got mine! :), 2 LatM, 1LatM Japanese ver, 2
    Awakes, and NO I&W (the gall!!!).
            Just a little note...when I referred to the ver of "Another Day" on the
    _Lie_ single being from LatM, I was not totally wrong. It is on the Japanese
    LatM, replacing "Surrounded" on the more common Germany (?) one. I don't think
    the extra 8 bucks is worth it when I already have it on the _Lie_ single.
            And to those who made the mental correction when I first posted it,
    you're right...I was/am a total idiot for not double-checking my sources.
            One last thing...I picked up my ACoS there for $9.99. And yes, I had
    to send someone to the back to get it for me. I went in at 5 PM and they had
    just received it at 3.

       Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Damon. I am a D.J. at 88.9 F.M.
    WMCX, my university radio station. I have played several really long songs,
    over 20 minutes, such as 2112 and Hemispheres, and The Fountatin of Lamneth
    from Rush, Close to the Edge from Yes, and a n Emerson Lake Palmer song I
    don't know the name of. So, it is conceiveable that I will sneak ACOs on my
    show at some point. Like when I need to go to the bathroom, get dinner, take
    a shower, go to the store, all at once. :) So, if you live in the Monmouth
    county area in New Jersey and you are on the list, be forewarned. ACOs may
    come to a college readio station near you.

    I really need to have the following information: Does someone on the list
    has got a copy of the following titles listed on the DT boots list: "A
    fortune pulled under" (Lp), "Dimension shift" (Cd), "Images and Tour!" (Cd)
    and "Unwired" (Cd). I have more than 30 different cd boots of Dream Theater
    but I have never seen those mentionned above elsewhere than on the lists of
    the jam. I Just want to know if they really exist or not!!

    If someone has one or several of this boots, please e-mail me... It is very
    important because I make a review of all the DT boots existing with copy of
    the covers and all the informations about the labels, sound qualities, track
    listing, etc...

    I have some spare copies of "Mind control", "Comedy","Tragedy" and "Dream
    out loud". If someone is interested, e-mail me. I am also interested in
    trading DT live tapes (I have more than 100 audio and 25 video).

    One last thing: Yes, ACOS rules, even if they cut the "Please don't go part"...

            I must say that I am a big fan of the "new and improved,
    reworked, rejerked" (quoting JLB) A Change of Seasons. I love Mike's
    snare sound!! Coffee cup? It sounds like a SNARE DRUM!! It's finally
    possibly to hear all of the intracacies he does on the snare. I also
    love the vocal harmonies in "Innocence." Sure, some parts are slower
    than the old version, but "Another World" is a little quicker, in fact.
    That damn wah-wah has got to go. There's this one thing that I noticed:
    near the beginning of the tune (I think it's before the vox start), Mike
    overdubbed some octabon fills over top of the existing drum parts. At
    first I thought, "That's silly -- it isn't really humanly possible." But
    now I think it's pretty cool -- hey, how many guitar tracks is JP using
    most of the time? :) Anyway, a big thank you goes out to the boys for a
    splendid gift! :) Later, 'jammers!

    Hello everyone, it's BABS. I was able to get the cassette version of
    A Change of Seasons yesterday. Here's my review:

    A CHANGE OF SEASONS:

    Lyrics: Absolutely beautiful. I can find no other way to describe the
    words.

    Music: Great, it has such a precise and crisp sound. As a matter of fact
    the guy who sold it to me in the store said "what can you tell me about
    this band? I listened to them for the first time today and the guitarist
    is fantastic, who is he?"

    Vocals: I don't even need to comment on James - everybody knows that the
    guy could gargle and I would think that it was great :) He is so fine!

    RONNIE SCOTT'S

    Truly wonderful, I was pleased to see that they were able to clean up and
    fine tune the sound from the gig. The only thing that bummed me is that
    they didn't put TEARS on it. I really like that tune.

    If the GODS are reading this I wish to say "thank you". What a legacy
    you have left!

    You're absolutely right about James' voice on this. He really has some problems
    during TTT, you can even hear him laugh about it at one point. However,
    immediately afterward, he kind of straightens up and gets it together.

    The recording itself is OK, but there are some obvious problems at certain
    points in the CD. At the very beginning, whoever made the original recording
    was having some electrical problems. You can hear the right channel cut out.
    It eventually gets fixed and starts to sound better. It happens again later
    though (someone tripped over the cables maybe? :)

    I wasn't too impressed with Portnoy's drum solo here after TLF. It wasn't
    funky enough for me (and I'm a drummer so I know about drumming). It sounded
    contrived and forced. I know he's a better drummer than that.

    The other thing I didn't like was the end of LTL. My favorite part is the
    keyboard refrain right after the grand pause. This part gets cut off in
    Dream out Loud because there's no more room left on the CD.

    What I really like about this one is "Nothing is Sacred". I hadn't heard it
    before and when I found it, I really enjoyed it. It made the CD for me.

    I went out yesterday to get ACOS at lunch. Since I was at work I ahd to
    listen to the cd on my sun with head phones. I definitely recommend
    listening to it via head phones. You get a different perspective on
    the song.

    Overall: ACOS is awesome. I suppose it may tide me over until the new
    DT in 1996 (well maybe)....

         Hey everyone I had a thought that it would be cool to send DT a big
         "Thank You" letter from us here on the Jam for putting out a release
         for the fans (they definately didn't do it to get more air play :). So
         what I propose is that we gather everybody's personal message to the
         band (what ever you want to say about ACOS or anything else) along
         with your name, ciy, state and email address. Then we can print up
         five (or more) nice copies and send them to the band. I am sure they
         will appreciate the support.
         
         I will take responsibility for assembling all of the messages (unless
         somebody else really wants to), and then we can figure out how we
         would all like this printed (maybe someone could contribute art work
         or something). I am open for suggestions so let them fly! And once we
         decide on exactly what we want to do, I'll start assembling the
         messages (wait until then to send them to me). So, everyone, let me
         know what you think and what your suggestions are...

    Hello all, again again:
            I have just one more 'Jam to go before I am all caught up. In the
    meantime, I just wanted to post a lil' something about depressing songs, since
    1:40 AM is the best time to listen to them.
            I just borrowed _Parallels_ by Fates Warning from one o' my good buds.
    To put it simply, the whole album is awesome, much better than _Inside Out_
    (IMHO). As for the depressing song...the last one on this album..."The Road
    Goes On Forever". Take another listen if you have _Parallels_, or stop by your
    nearest "listening post" and lend an ear. You won't be disappointed.

    Another hello from an extremely wet Germany.

    There is quite a lot of stuff I want to get rid of here, so make yourselves
    comfortable, and I'll begin.

    So far, no reply to my request for infos about Shadow Gallery (see
    YTSEJAM digest 961). I would be grateful for everything and anything.

    The ACoS CD came into my grubby little paws yesterday. There isn't much that
    I can say that hasn't already been said. My overall impression is simply
    fantastic. There has been much talk in these hallowed pages about the band's
    influences: has anybody else out there noticed the strong influence of Allan
    Holdsworth on JP's guitar work about two thirds of the way through the title
    track. Final comment (honest): I haven't been impressed by a long track so much
    since I first heard Yes's Close to the Edge back in 72.

    Heath Augustover asked how people get into DT. Well, here's my account of it,
    even if some of it is a little blurred (damned German beer).
    I've always been into progressive music (whatever that may be) since the
    early days of my youth. I can remember sleeping on the pavement outside
    concert halls in London to see Yes for just two pounds!! I can even remember
    seeing Genesis as a support band for Emerson, Lake and Palmer (who they??).
    Anyway, I got older, went to university, got a degree, came to Germany and
    lost contact with the music scene. Then, about three years ago, I was here
    at work discussing music (Zappa to be exact) with a colleague, and she
    started ranting and raving about some bunch of long-haired wierdos called
    Dream Theater. She gave me the tapes and the rest - as they say - is just
    history. Karin - I'll be grateful to you for ever.

    Next point. There have been some comments about the DT interactive, and the
    fact that it doesn't run on some machines. Well, I've got a 486 running
    Windows 3.1, and it runs fine. But if you want my opinion, your not really
    missing anything: it's fairly basic, and doesn't tell/show you anything
    that you don't already know.

    Subconscious time now. Does anybody know of a Subcon dub site in Europe or
    preferably Germany? If such a site exists, I would be pleased to hear about it.

    Nearly finished (is anybody still awake?). Just for my own information, I
    would be interested to know how old we are. As you can probably work out for
    yourselves, if you have read this junk carefully, I must be old, grey and
    wrinkled (a sprightly 37 actually). I just can't live with the thought that
    I might be the oldest YTSEJAMer around!!

    Well, we've made it to the end. Thanx for bearing with me. Now put ACoS in
    the CD player, crank up the volume (to hell with the neighbours) and...

    When Dream Theater played in the Netherlands for the first time (I believe it
    was the first time; about three years ago during their Images & Words tour),
    the guys from the band I recently joined back then told me I should come with
    them to that show; they considered Dream Theater their biggest influence.

    I'ld never heard of the band before, so the first time I got in touch with
    them, was during I live concert, and everybody here knows (I suppose) it's
    impressing to hear them for the first time, but seeing them at the same time...
    gee, try to describe that! I bought Images & Words the next day, and since then
    it didn't take look before I could call myself a Dream Theater since then!

    Hey dudes...dudettes...im back.....

    Does anyone know what kind of guitar preamp Petrucci uses on ACOS (does
    he still use the Tri-Axis, and if so how does he get so much gain from it),
    I have a Mesa-Boogie DC-3, and i was wondering if anyone can reccomend
    a preamp (under $600) to get that Petrucci tone (i cant afford a Triaxis), i
    was considering driving the DC-3 with a Mesa V-Twin, would that be a good
    idea?, ok well later all....

    P.S. Derek Sherinnian has proved himself....his solo at about 18:00 is awesome
    its definetly different that Moores playing (less bends, more staccato), and
    how does he do that wawrbling sound after his solo???

    think that if John Petrucci shaves and trims his hair, he will look JUST

    Well, I didn't really notice that Mike's snare sounded different, but I
    guess it's because my old drummer used a piccolo snare. He had won it at
    a Chad Smith clinic (RHCP), and basically, that was his starting point
    (he was not a drummer before the clinic).
    I guess I kinda liked the sound...It has lots of presence and bite.
    ACoS still rules!

    OK, here we go,

    My opinion on ACOS:
    This was the first time I heard the song and I love it!
    I went to the record store on friday the 15 and got ACOS from the display
    and while I was there I checked out the DT section and what did I find! The
    Silent Man and Lie CD singles with EVE and To Live Forever on... YES!
    I'm very impressed by the lyrics but on Saturday night they sent the movie
    "Dead Poets Society" and I don't think it is a coincidence that it was
    released the same year that ACOS was written...
    The production of ACOS (the song) is good but You can hear that it is not
    as "expensive" production as AWAKE, I think that the sound is a bit narrow,
    almost feeling like it's in mono on the heavier parts. Mikes snare sounds
    a bit akward on the first heavy parts but I think it suits the rest of the
    song.
    The sound on the live tracks are great, IMHO almost better than the studio
    track.
    I have always said that James sounded a bit like Ian Gillan and Perfect
    Stranger displays it very well, but JP playing the verse riff an octave
    down was something I had to get used do...
    My rating of the album: 9 out of 10!!! (maybe 9,5)

    I second the opinion on a Video of the whole Ronnie Scott gig!!!!

    How I found out about DT:
    On night in the winter 93/94, a video was played on Headbangers Ball,MTV
    europe that blowed my mind away, the title was Take the Time. I told my
    girlfriend about this "new" band Dream Teater and she told me that she had
    heard about them on the Swedish radio, some DJ had seen them in concert and
    was raving about "the band that would save prog. rock...". Next week on HB
    they sent an interview with Kevin & James and played TTT and Pull Me Under,
    I bought I & W and both me and my girlfriend loved it (we're married now!)
    and still do!

    Is there any one in Sweden on the list that:
    Have the subcon. CD? please mail me.
    Knows were to get DT bootlegs, I'd love to have a boot from the AWAKE tour!!!

    C'mon, Hairball! Didn't I tell you before? At least *I* am reading your audio
    stuff. It's a hell of a lot more interesting than the shit I should learn
    at this moment! I'm a student of Computer Science and Economics, you know
    what I mean? F***ing boring would be a nice description. So please go on!

    Now for the usual stuff these days:

    Got ACOS, finally! Yeah! ;-)

    It's hard to get into it, when you're used to the Limelight version, the
    new parts, the missing old parts, and, of course, Derek's keys... His solos
    are very, very jazzy! What's cool, but you need to get used to it when you
    got Kevin's more classical style in your head.

    I sure miss this blasting keys/guitar-duet-followed-by-a-fast-Kevin-Moore-
    solo-part (before part now knows as The Crimson Sunset) of the live
    version, but Derek's COOL solo and the heavy riff they put in there instead
    are really powerful. This, along with the phantastic intro/outro helps me
    to get over the loss ;-) I love the way the KILLER riff from the intro
    reappears here and then and holds the whole song together.

    BTW, for the ones who haven't got the opportunity to see them live this
    summer, the high bells (listen from 0:45 on) are played by Mike. It's the
    first time I noticed him play a melody instead of just an effect (like in
    the Metropolis intro, I think) with this thing (what's it called, enlighten
    me!).

    Ever heard ACOS with headphones? That fading from left to right and back of
    some samples and vocals drives me mad. A bit antique, isn't it? We aren't
    in the seventies anymore! "Whoa, listen, that's in stereo!" Ok, it's not
    that bad, but I had to tell you that.

    For the ones complaining about that thin drum sound: I also like a fat
    snare sound more, but the drum sound on the EP is A LOT better than the one
    on I&W! Just because there IS one and not only a sample. And I still think,
    even after I heard the EP and the sound was better than I had hoped, this
    should been the last time they worked with Prater. Listen to the thin vocal
    sound, just like I&W. Still Awake's the number one!

    The covers are great, too, especially Perfect Strangers. Phantastic sound
    for a live recording, which brings something to my mind: The ones who got a
    copy of the boot of this show should check if there are really any overdubs
    on the EP. If they, for example, really added the vocals to the Led
    Zeppelin songs, well, that's ok, but wouldn't it been more correct if they
    honestly told us about that in the booklet?

    But the best thing of the whole EP is, that WE are mentioned in the
    booklet. MANY THANKS to you, Dream Theater, for this special gift for your
    fans! You rule!

    On the CD it says that EastWest is still a division of Atlantic. What's
    correct now?

    Hey there!

    Picked up ACOS yesterday, have listened to it several times now. I get more impressed with it every time I hear it. Unfortunately (or maybe not), I had never heard it until this disc came out, so I don't have any means for comparison.

    I agree with the posts that complained about Mike's snare. Sounds very thin and tinny.

    My question, though, is this: Since the guys mentioned Steve Hogarth, Steve Rothery, and Steve Howe specifically in the liner notes, how come none of the covers are Yes or Marillion? Also, don't you think they could have chosen a better Genesis cover? Did they do any others at the show? Personally, I think they'd kick ass on "The Knife."

    Man I can't believe there are that many peoply who haven't heard Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers!!! It is one of my favorite all time tunes. I realize Deep Purple hasn't done anything of note in the last several years, but that was a big hit when it came out. Dream Theater's cover of it is really great. It is not quite as heavy as Deep Purple, but pretty close. I can't wait til Acoutic Dreams comes out with the Bruce Dickinson version. That should be awesome!     Hey all!

    I don't think I've wasted enough time reading through THREE(!) ytsejam digests that I found in my mailbox this morning, so I'll waste some more time with some random musings...

    ACOS: Left work early yesterday, and braved just horrific traffic to go pick up a copy of this incredible CD. In fact, both the CD and tape were on sale, so I picked up one of each, which together cost about the same as a normal CD there. =] Needless to say, I wasn't so upset about the traffic on the way home, cuz it gave me a chance to blast the tape and listen to almost all of ACOS before getting home.

    This song is just incredible. I have Subconscious, but it was my first boot and I've found I don't really listen to it that much because of the quality. So my reactions are based almost solely on this version, and it's just amazing. I _love_ the opening heavy part after the acoustic intro. I know it's slower than the Subcon version, and quite different, but it just rocks like nothing else in this world. In fact the entire Crimson Sunrise instrumental is just phenomenal. I've only listened to the whole thing a couple times, so I don't remember very many specific parts. The one thing I'm bummed about is that my commute to work is only 15 minutes, so I can't listen to the whole song in my car! 8^).

    How I got into DT: It was Winter term of 1993, my Junior year in college. I lived in a dorm with a roommate I just couldn't stand. He went to bed every night at 10:00, and got up at 7am (what kind of a college student is that?) So every night I would do my homework with just my desk light on, and no music at all. :p After a while I got fed up and started going out to the lounge at around 2:00am to watch some MTV. This was how I discovered Dream Time (or something like that). It's the only time MTV has anything decent on, and one night I turned it on right in the middle of a video that was in the midst of an incredible instrumental section. This was followed by the lead singer singing an incredible passage with an insane range, followed by more intense wailing by the entire band. I was immediately interested in this band. I watched the rest of the video and discovered the name: Dream Theater. The song was Pull Me Under. (I came in during the first keyboard part right before "Watch the sparrows falling/Gives new meaning to it all...").

    So for several weeks I would take a break from my homework at around 2:00am, go out to the lounge, and watch for this video. It would almost always come on between 2 and 3am. I also heard it on ZROCK a couple times, and I knew I had to get this album. Finally one weekend when I was driving up to Portland (Oregon...I was going to school in Corvallis, @ OSU) to see my girlfriend, I heard PMU on the radio. At that time I was just coming up on an exit for Salem, and I immediately got off the freeway, went to the first store, which happened to be Fred Meyer (a NW chain), and picked up the tape _Images and Words_. I will never forget the remainder of that trip from Salem to Portland. I remember the feeling of awe I had as I came to realize that this band embodied everything that I had been looking for in a musical group. The range of styles, from "Take the Time" to "Surrounded" to "Wait for Sleep", and the incredible songwriting throughout.

    Shortly after this I began a six-month internship in Portland, and I can swear that for those entire six months that tape never left the deck in my car. It's always been frustrating being the only person I know that truly appreciates what Dream Theater does, because my friends never picked up on them as much as I have. But then, last January, I found the Ytsejam, and my life was fullfilled (well, in a musically, metaphorically kind of way ;). Now I know that I wasn't crazy for thinking that this is the best, most talented group of rock musicians on the planet, and I know I'm not alone in my love of their music. Now if only people I know would realize how great they are as well!

    Yikes, I just realized how long this is. I'll stop now (not that anyone's reading this by now anyway). Happy 'jamming!
