ProgDay '95 in Chapel Hill, NC (Sept. 3) was a lot of fun. The turnout
was not that great but at least the weather was superb. The highlights
for me were: Bon Lozaga, Echolyn, and Cloud Nine.

If you are into fusion jazz, I would suggest ordering some of the CDs on
Bon's label Lolo Records. You can call them at: (609)829-1536
A good one to start with is Gongzilla - Suffer (Allan Holdsworth is
featured on 4 of the tracks). Bon's solo work is incredible as well!

I had never heard Echolyn until I saw them live at ProgDay. Echolyn blew
me away. I can see how many people may not grasp them on first listen to
their album "As The World", but seeing them live convinced me and now I
must get the CD. I hope many of you will decide to buy "As The World" so
that the demand for prog music seems high and major labels will want to
sign other progressive bands such as INFERNO... :)

    Until later -

    Jay Peele
For information on INFERNO, e-mail: jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu

    Hey Jammers!

Does anyone have some news about our fellow jammer Al Balkiewicz? I
tried to email him but didn't reach him. I know he had an accident
some 2 or 3 months ago and had to go to hospital. So what the hell
    happened to him?

    Bye.

    Bernd.

Please make sure that next time you send a message that you don't
include the ENTIRE digest-copy of the "ytsejam" list. I'm sure you
probably didn't mean to do it. Just next time, make sure it doesn't
    happen. OK?

    Thanks

Hello fellow Ytsejammers. Remember milkman@wam.umd.edu? Now I'm
ekim01@fiu.edu. I've started a new life at a new school, taking guitar
and piano lessons, and I'm studying what I always wanted - music.
BTW, are there any other Ytsejammers that are studying music at the
    university level?

When I first heard I&W, it was 'Surrounded' and 'Another Day' that made a
lasting impression on me. A friend of mine suggested that I listen to PMU
since he knew me to be a metalhead. Oddly enough, my fave DT song is
    still 'Surrounded.'

I will apologize like everyone else and say that I love the uptempo songs
just as much (people seem to associate me with hard rock and it's one of
my favorite genres). Even PMU has dynamic character, but much more subtle
than the 'whisper to a scream' dynamic device. I am kicking myself for
getting into LTL as late as after _Awake_! It is one of the few songs
    that has made me cry.

Another fun fact: Images and Words was the first CD I ever bought.

It's been almost a year since the release of Awake, and I'm still
awe-struck with all three albums to date. Listening to DT makes me want
to practice most of all. When I'm tired, or don't feel like practicing,
one spin will give me the kick in the ass that I need. My attitude is
that I admire the level of musicianship that DT has achieved and I would
like to work hard just as they have.

DT has also inspired people to take up a musical instrument. Fellow
Ytsejammer bdon@wam.umd.edu has done so and I wish him luck with the
guitar. And if you ever meet him, you'll probably agree with me that he
    looks like Bernie Kosar.

Sorry about the length, but it's my first post in ages.

Elliott Kim - ekim 01@fiu.edu, proud owner of SUBCONSCIOUS #214, formerly
    known as milkman@wam.umd.edu.

    Hello again..

    Some thoughts on 'TLF.'

It's one of my fave DT songs, and when I tried to transcribe it, I
discovered that the acoustic version on SUBCONSCIOUS is sped up one-half
step. When I got the 'Lie' CD single, it became perfectly clear how to
play the open string notes along with the fretted unison notes in the intro.
Both versions are brilliant, and the live version on LiT is a guitar
    player's treat.

And what exactly are seven Patriot missiles doing over Cuba anyway?

    hi all.

Sorry about NDTC, but Jason Hartman was just cruising around the WWW, and on
the echolyn homepage there are some pictures of a show in Baltimore in April
of 95, at which show fellow jammers Jason Hartman, Mike Backof and myself
were present. Well, if you look at the picture of Brett <the guitarist>, in
the lower left corner of the same picture the guy in the ytsejam shirt is me!
This is very exciting for me--I'm famous! :)

    See you later!

To all of you telling us about your promotional copies of ACoS, and all
of you quoting lyrics to ACoS...

    ..Please!!! Have mercy!!!

I wasn't fortunate enough to find a bootleg w/ ACoS on it...

I've been to multiple record stores asking to buy or at least look at
their promotional copies. One clerk even asked, "Dream Theater - A Change
of Seasons... is that a new movie?"

    Aaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhh!

I just can't wait any longer! ...I guess it's only a couple of weeks though :)

    Frustrated in Michigan....

P.S. Does anyone know of any sites on the 'Net that might have some DT wave

I was in Holland yesterday and today morning and asked in two record shops
(in Zoetermeer and Arnhem), and both had never heard of ACOS, though other
DT CD's were for sale. I believe they jumped the gun at CD Europe.

    Sorry,

(Hopefully when I accidentally killed my mail window the message I was in the middle of sending didn't go out. If so, sorry).

All this talk about ACoS has got me *really* anxious to hear it! And no one has yet mentioned whether that cool instrumental section that starts around 15:00 in the Dance of Eternity version is still in there and is still as riveting.... :-)

As for Iluvatar, you can order their first, self-titled, disc from Of Sound Mind (410) 529-7082. Or you can get it directly from Kinesis (their label) in Hanover, Maryland (not sure of their phone number, try calling information). Their second disc is due out at the end of September and is supposed to be even better than their first. They are well worth checking out.

It took over the best movie of the year spot for me (surpassing Breveheart, though it's a completely different style, so they're hard to compare). For those of you who like twists and turns in the best style of Hitchcock, check out "The Usual Suspects". Also, do not read or watch anything about it beforehand since it's easy to give stuff away about it. Fortunately, I went in with a fresh perspective and was blown away. I read some of the reviews afterwards and couldn't believe how much they gave away... BTW, it's a pretty dark movie with some violence, but I felt it all fit well with the plot. Has anyone else seen this movie yet? It only has a limited release, I think -- hopefully it will be released widely.

As we all know, Mike Bahr has spent a considerable amount of time working to bring us "Subconscious" and "Acoustic Dreams", and is making no profit doing it. He has done us all a great service, and he deserves something for it. I was thinking about what I could do to repay him for his efforts. Then, I realized I could send him a "gratuity"(similar to tipping a bartender, waitress, cab driver, etc...). This would help mike to bring in some cash and have a little money in return for his efforts in bringing these CD's to us. Also, It would also ENCOURAGE him to make some more of these CD's for us. I don't think that this will effect the legality of what he is doing, for the following reasons: 1. I am sending this "Gratuity" to him as a SEPARATE Check, without any references to SUBCONSCIOUS or ACOUSTIC DREAMS. 2. He (Mike Bahr) is not soliciting or requiring for us to pay him. 3. He can cash my check if he so desires(he does not have to), and if he doesn't, my conscience knows that I tried.

I just thought I would include this in the JAM, hoping that some other people on the Jam would follow suit. Maybe it will bring him enough cash to speed up the release date for the "When Dream And ???? Unite" CD.

Mike, If you are reading this, I just wanted to say "Thanks"

P.S.: I am in NO WAY affiliated with Mike Bahr, I have never even met him.

Okay, so you mean to tell me that *no one* here can tell me the address for The Dream Theater in Monterey, CA? Didn't Tony (AKA WarmWetOs) write a post about serendipitiously finding it on his honeymoon? Is it in the FAQ? (Oh, and, speaking of addresses, what's the site for the FAQ anyhow - too many little sheets of paper strewn across my desk. <g>) Thanks! :)

Issue 10 has gone to press and in the mail at last! :) Well - the ones to North American addresses, that is. I need to get some manila envelopes for the European addresses tomorrow, since the dang post office says everything that goes overseas has to be in an envelope! :P
