This is the update for the rest of the net for Cygnus.. the price
for Jammers is still only $23.

NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY: RUSH - CYGNUS
    UPDATE for 9/9/1995

NOTICE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com
QUICK NOTE: The first 350 CDs have already been shipped! More to come!
I am sending them via Us Postal Service book rate. This means
it can sometimes take a week or more for it to make it to you
(though people from the west coast seem to be getting theirs
in 2-3 days). I promise, I'm crankin' them out as fast as is
humanly possible! There have been three or four instances of
lost CDs... I'm getting those re-sent as everthing is bulk
                insured.

Hi all! It's time to update y'all on the CD project. I have finally
received my shipment of the Rush CYGNUS CD, a CD with an incredible sound
board show from the mystical Hemispheres tour, on it. And I guess I will go
ahead and take orders for it... if you like, you can email a reservation
before you send your check or MO. Here's the info:

            Rush "CYGNUS"
Recorded at: TCC Arena (Convention Center Arena)
            Location: Tucson, Arizona
            Date: November 20, 1978
Source: 2nd gen of original soundboard reel,
transferred to 48kHz DAT and mastered to CD
            Quality: See notes below.

            Track Listing:
            Anthem
            A Passage to Bangkok
            By-Tor & the Snow Dog
                    I. At the Tobes of Hades
                    II. Across the Styx
                    III. Of the Battle
            Xanadu
            Something for Nothing
            The Trees
Cygnus X-1 Book One: The Voyage
            Cygnus X-1 Book Two: Hemispheres
                    I. Prelude
                    II. Apollo
                    III. Dionysus
                    IV. Armageddon
                    V. Cygnus
                    VI. The Sphere
            Circumstances
            A Farewell to Kings

            Running time 72:52

I did a pre-order project like this for the Dream Theater mailing list
a few months back and it worked out very, very well. Any of you who want a
reference or voucher for me, direct your question at any DT fan who is on
the Ytsejam list, and I'll let their judgment be the Word.

            How to order:

(PLEASE ALLOW 3 to 4 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.)
-A lot of you might have forgotten about this. Since the oldest
orders in the queue that are not yet mailed are only 3 weeks
old, I'm catching up slowly but surely.

Send a cashier's check or money order (made out to me) to:
                    Michael Bahr
                    Limelight Music
                    3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
                    Chandler, AZ 85224

Note: I'm just a humble fan with a project going, not a store
or CD warehouse... the dealers and mailorder places can give
way better prices on other common boots so I don't have or
sell any of them. Limelight is what I put on my business license
so that I could pay sales tax, thus nobody would ask how I was
getting all this money to deposit and why I'd dump thousands
at a time into CD production. :)

            The price is as follows:
                    $25 US - base
free - postage within the USA
                    $1 - postage in Canada
$2 - postage to anywhere else

So it would cost $25 to send it to Strawberry, Arizona... $26 to
send it to Halifax, Nova Scotia... and $27 to Saitama, Japan.

A note on quality. A lot of people ask me how does the sound compare
to A Right to Passage and Spirit of St. Louis. Well, I guess I can give you
all a rough idea. Speaking comparatively, ARTP emphasizes the booming bass
sound the most and has the muddiest guitar and vocals of the three; SOSL has
the booming bass and great vocals, but a muddy guitar, muddy drums, and too
much high-end distortion, and Cygnus has less boom (the drums still give a
mighty THUMP, but you hear the "thwap twang thwap" of Geddy's bass strings
as opposed to an indistinct booming resonance), the stereo separation is
clearer, and vocals are the clearest of the three. Vocals are really the
standout on Cygnus... it sounds like Geddy's standing in your room. So if you
want to crank up the subwoofer and crumble the walls, buy ARTP. But if you
like to be able to hear bass slap and cool effects, try Cygnus. As some
people have noted, there are some DROPOUTS that have been masked as well as
I could. They were present on the master tape, so I couldn't do much but
try to repair the gaping holes they left. I hope they won't ruin it for you.
Finally, remember that concerts back in 1978 didn't emphasize punch like
they do today, and you WILL have to crank the bass if you want this Cd to
    thump-thump-boom away. It's guitar- and vocal-heavy balancewise.

Now then, back to ordering via cashier's check or MO.

Why use a cashier's check or MO? Besides the fact that they can't
bounce, they are traceable both ways. You know that if you don't eventually
get a CD or a refund, I'll be in deep shit. :) It's really the safest way to
buy, as I myself have been burned in net dealings before, I do my best to
alleviate those fears where my projects are concerned.

Apparently, this offer isn't as limited as I originally thought...
400 copies have been ordered so far. Still, this CD is bound to become
very valuable as it is a rare and much-coveted concert. Already, my first CD
offering "Dream Theater/Subconscious" is being re-sold by others for twice
what I originally sold them all for. And I'm afraid it sold out
completely... there are no more left to sell!

PLEASE! When you send the money order, TELL ME that you're ordering
the Cygnus CD. Most of you are already doing this, I just wanted to make sure
you all knew, as I am still wrapping up work on Subconscious, as well as
taking the early pre-orders for the next Dream Theater CD. Also, be sure to
include your email address. It's quite hard to get ahold of you if something
    goes awry, without it. :)

A note on the CD LABEL: It does not say the word "Rush" anywhere on it
but all the songs are labelled correctly (Anthem, The Trees, Hemispheres,
etc.) and it says "Cygnus" rather prominently. Dont let this nuance of
labelling throw you off. A lot of you are already familiar with this, but
before the Italian Cd companies started legally making boots in recent years,
boots produced in the USA could not bear the band's name on their labels.
Look at Rush boots like "Through any Window" and "Nassau '82".. on the record
labels they have fake band names and song names. I just put the real song
names and "Cygnus" and left Rush off, since I didn't want to complicate things
any more than they already were. It _IS_ the Rush show from 11/20/78 and it
is already well known here on the net, if a bit scarce.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me or call me
at (602) 777-0501, between the hours of 6pm and 11pm Pacific time. I'm sorry
that I don't have an answering machine (as this is my home line, it's mainly
available to all of you as a courtesy) but if I'm there, we'll chat. I do
have classes these days so I may or may not be there. I do have work and
school like the rest of you, after all. Please understand why you may not
catch me at home the first three or four times you try. If the phone rings,
I *WILL* answer it if I'm there, that much I will definitely
promise you. If you miss me entirely and want *me* to call *you*, I will
do so if you leave your number in email. Please understand that it will
probably be brief as I'm a starving student with a phone bill. :)

    Thanks all!

    Hey people...

As some of you know, I work for a radio station
in Trenton (the studios are in Princeton, though),
NJ. Well, part of the "intern" portion of my "job"
is to gather up sound f/x and sound bites for
    use on the station.

You may remember that I got a portion of TTT
(which I looped around) on the station as
background music (or, as we like to call them,
    "beds").

Now, they're using the tail end of Mike's drum solo
from The Ytse Jam during one of the promos!

If you're within earshot of 'PST (97.5), listen for it.

(I am going to push the "O Holy Night" from SubCon
for Xmas, incidentally...and the Acoustic Dreams
    version as well. <g>)

You might also be hearing Pantera soon- I went through
the entire Far Beyond Driven CD and pulled stuff off
of that...and I'm taking Awake & I&W back in as soon
as I get all my CD's unpacked.

    I've been a busy boy! =)

Thought you might find it interesting. Ah, I know most
people in this area don't know DT, but, I get a great deal
of joy out of the fact that a top 40/alternative lean radio
station has to rely on bands like DT & Pantera for cool
    guitar/drum effects. =)

    Later,

    short!!!!!)

    Hi all!

In YJ#943, Paul wrote about Mortal Kombat (The Movie). I also thought it
was a good movie. The Art direction, music, even the choreography for the
fights... pretty cool! One note on the music.....
There is some really cool 'background' music played for various scenes...
Mostly cool drum rhythms and nice moody guitar accents... these are taken
from songs by Stabbing Westward's 'Ungod'. Anyone else ever hear of them?
They are pretty cool! They have a great sense of mood & rhythm. You might
remember another of their tunes from a Sony commercial. During the commercial,
Tony Bennett is shown driving in a convertible. A wing of helicopters passes
over head with big speakers on the skids... They are blasting an absolutely
kick-ass tune. Tony Bennett points a remote at the helicopters and one of
his songs starts playing. The awesome tune that Tony B.interrupts is a tune
named 'Violent Mood Swings' from that same Stabbing Westward album. That disc
    kicks... anyway....

On the Musicland thing... Yeah, they suck! When I wrote a couple of issues
back about my ordeal of looking for the promotional CD. The clerk first asked
if it was a movie. I explained: No. I'm wondering if you happen to have a
_promotional_ copy of the CD A Change of Seasons by a band named Dream
Theater. She proceeded to walk towards the wall of released rock CD's and
    said:
What was the band called? I said: No. It hasn't been released yet. I was
wondering if you might have a promotional copy of this CD. She said: Uhhh,
    no, we don't get those...

    How frustrating!!!!

Anyway... Have an excellent weekend! (I'm starting mine early!!!)

My local HMV here in Waterloo, Ontario says that their release date for
ACOS is Sept 19th, which is the same as the American date I think. This
is good news as I was worried it would be pushed back a week (like Awake
was). I don't really want to drive to Buffalo to buy another DT album :)

Hi all! A bunch of jammers have inquired about the release date of ACoS,
and a bunch of people claim it's Sept. 19th. Although it was supposed to
be released the 19th, at the Providence show, James mentioned that it'll
be released the 26th. So we've got to wait a week longer! Oh well.
Anyone know why this delay has occured? Could it be because they went
back and took out the "f" word like a bunch of wusses? ;)

    Later, jammers!

nothing of acos except one which has it coming out the 19th...but that
was taken down and now its not up anywhere.
Everyone here listens to grunge and alternative so i dont think many care.

    >
    > And now, I have Acoustic Dreams on tap.
    >
    > Well, this is the current CD I'm doing, also known as Dream Theater
    > Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent
    > Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the

    >
    > Here's the final tracklisting from Acoustic Dreams. I know many

    > 06/--/1996 - Dream Theater: To be announced

    > Here are a few descriptions to keep your curiosity satiated :)
    >
    > Dream Theater "In The Subconscious" - 1 piece - sold
    > Also known as Subconscious #000, this original pre-mix master CD
    > has all the songs in their original, unrefined state, and was
    > sold along with the rest. Quite the collector's piece, I'd wager.
    > Is on a gold CD-R with test cover.
    > Dream Theater "Subconscious"
    > Released 04/03/1995 - Limited Edition - 500 copies - sold out
    > Contained Dream Theater rarities including A Change of Season.
    > Rush "Cygnus" Alpha Test Print
    > Released 08/07/1995 - 5 pieces - given away to random testers
    > Identical to the regular release of Cygnus except has a different
    > cover (original white cover), has dropouts as-is (no fadeouts),
    > and is in a few other ways just a "test print". Only edition of
    > Cygnus ever to say "Rush: Cygnus" and not "Cygnus Tribute" because
    > I was able to make the bland black & white covers myself.
    > Rush "Cygnus"
    > Released 08/14/1995 - Unlimited Edition - still available
    > Contains a rare soundboard show from the Hemispheres tour.
    > Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams"
    > Currently in pre-ordering.
    > To be released 09/30/1995 - Limited Edition of 500 copies
    > Each copy will be hand signed/numbered in gold for authenticity.
    > Contains beautiful unplugged performances.
    > Public Affection "The Death of a Dictionary"
    > To be released 11/30/1995 - Unlimited print
    > Is actually +Live+'s little-known first album, released in 1989,
    > two years before their 1991 breakthrough Mental Jewelry. Demand for
    > this one is skyrocketing, and the Jam gets first shot at it.
    > Dream Theater "When Dream and Today Unite"
    > To be released 12/25/1995 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000.
    > Contains the songs from Dream and Day only with James LaBrie on
    > vocals. Collected from MANY sources and optimized for quality.
    > Some of these still need quality boosts. (Light Fuse, STS...)
    >
    > The following are all "Work in Progress" releases...
    > Rush other titles I'm considering (for any of the given shows):
    > Land's Edge, Storm World, Lifeforce, Arena of the Ancients...
    > Rush "A Symptom of Life" - from 12/20/81 2nd gen soundboard
    > Contains a LOT of neat stuff. a LOT. But very long... 2 CD set?
    > Rush "Concordant Crossroads" - from 3/24/81 audience MASTER in stereo
    > This one has unbelievable good sound quality. It's a tossup whether
    > to take this or Symptom, since both are so good but so similar.
    > Rush "Sleight of Mind" - from a remastered 6/25/75 Toronto
    > This tour has been very underrepresented in available material, so
    > who knows, if S.H.'s cleanup efforts turn out good...
    > +Live+ "Disenchanting Discourse" - from a 10/25/94 audience MASTER in stereo
    > It might be released, it might not, depending on many things. If you
    > would like to see it released, please let me know and let as many
    > people know as you can. I tend to find ways to release things when
    > I find an overwhelming demand for them. :)
    > Type O-Negative "Deathgrip" - from a 5/30/94 audience MASTER in stereo
    > A great setlist and decent sound. Only my worries about how many
    > copies I can sell prevent this. I can't undertake anything less than
    > a potential sellout project or I risk going under. Again, if this is
    > a title you'd like to see, you can make it happen. All I need is a
    > lot of interest, and away we go! So far I've had a few positive
    > replies... much much more are needed though.
    > Dream Theater... oh who knows, there's so much good stuff.
    > Possible shows:
    > Osaka soundboard from late 1992
    > Hamburg soundboard from spring 1993
    > Vocalist auditions
    > various excellent DATs recorded in Texas
    >
    > 3. How can I order a copy of Acoustic Dreams?
    >
    > Finally, I am going to go ahead and let the ordering begin, because
    > I can tell everyone's excitement level is peaking at this point. :) I will
    > say this in advance: I expect it to come out 9/30 or thereabouts (I'm going
    > to try and beat my own schedule) and that's two months away, folks. If that
    > dosen't bother you too much, I guess it won't bother me either. However, I'm
    > one of those guys who hates having things take too long. :)
    >
    > I say this because Subconscious took an unbelievably long time to
    > turnaround due to delays in the making of it, and despite my best efforts,
    > Cygnus is going a bit too slow for my taste as well (though it's still within
    > the predicted schedule, it was a schedule I had been planning to beat). So I
    > am trying to jumpstart Acoustic Dreams so there's NO DAMN WAITING. :)
    >
    > Here's the nitty gritty then:
    >
    > RESERVATIONS. I'll take them, to save you a COPY, but not necessarily a
    > _specific copy_. In many cases, people who request special numbers
    > such as birthdays and so on will get them. But people requesting a
    > specific low number are going to find that they're all sold. Which
    > brings me to the next point:
    > ORDERS. The numbering, excepting special requests when possible, will fill
    > in the order I receive the mail orders. It's only fair after all.
    > I'll reserve a copy for someone over e-mail, but if thirty people
    > get their orders in before he or she does, it's not fair for me to
    > still hold copy #014 or whatever. You all get the idea... these
    > decisions are just in the effort to make it fair for all.
    >
    > Please, I stress to all of you, don't miss this if you missed
    > Subconscious. It really does pain me to have to tell a fellow DT fan that
    > there simply aren't any more Sub discs to be had, especially because I would
    > be MORE than glad to sell one if I had it.
    >
    > Blanks, materials, studio time, etc is cheaper per unit for a
    > production line of 1000 than for 500, which is why Cygnus was cheaper for the
    > Ytsejammers. Acoustic Dreams, alas, must remain $25. I was hoping to bring it
    > down to $21 or $20 but that wouldn't be cost effective. I think I may be able
    > to do that for the Public Affection CD, however.
    >
    > Things are pretty simple from here. Send along a money order for
    > $25 bucks to my address, being sure to include a note with your name, the
    > address to ship to, your email address, and WHICH CD you're ordering (after
    > all, Cygnus is still in ordering) and HOW MANY you're ordering. As before,
    > international customers may use whatever means of payment is most convenient
    > for them, though I stress that sending cash is risky and should not be a
    > first option, but a backup plan. :) Also, to pool opinions: would you all
    > want me to include a number list as orders are received?
    >
