OK, I think I got the new updates sent (elm is acting odd today, refusing
to send sometimes and giving me undeliverables, so I hope that worked) to
    the web sites.

Well, you probably should read it before you read the rest of my
mail (there's convenience for ya) so, like, save this Jam in your mailbox
and get back to it or something.

Now it's time to turn to the Ytsejam/Metropolis public at large
to see how the orders for "Precious Things" should be handled. I've
always been one who was willing to listen to good suggestions. As you'll
find out in the update, very few copies will be created, for some very
specific reasons. I don't mean to exclude anyone, nor do I mean to make
it harder for the DT collector to fulfill their (very admirable) quest.
It's because what goes around, comes around, and there are some people
who deserve a real gem at this point for all they've done.

One possibility is that I could have those wanting to purchase a
copy (beyond the initial 70 + 15 that will be accounted for) simply win
the chance at random in a random lottery. I could, say, take the first
120 who e-mailed in, put them into 3 groups of 40, and when the local
lottery drawing next came on TV, take the 5 numbers (they are always
between 1 and 40) and offer the 15 CDs to those number holders in each
    respective list.

That would be easy, but it might be too keyed to luck, and I'd
like to give the eternally unlucky (I am one such person) a chance to
gain their CD with skill. I could solicit (until a certain date)
submissions and choose the best 15, in e-mail. They could be:
"why I should get to have this CD/drink this beer/curse Ytse-Ben"
"what Dream Theater/prog rock/guitar/my nose means to me"
"how many Jammers can you name, without looking it up"

or ideas to that effect. I'm willing to try whatever most people
want to do. Other ideas are encouraged.

            Well, take it easy, everyone...

    MTFBWY! Mike Bahr, durnik@indirect.com/mikebahr@dreamt.org

I used to be an advocate of college radio (especially since I work on a
campus) and thoroughly used to enjoy 90.7 out of Genesee Community College
in Batavia (Jaime the Dragon can back me up on this one). They were an
absolute kick ass station. You would get to hear tunes from the late 70's
& 80's (they even spent a good amount of time on the music of the 60's),
but it was the good cuts rather than the overplayed commercial tunes that
aired on MTV. I'm talking about Maiden (Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner) Rush
(Xanadu). They were also the first station to start playing Pearl Jam's
Black (my favorite tune from them) as well as Nirvana. So you were able to
get a good mix of the old and the new and it was really good.
Unfortunately, they are now full blown alternative. So is our station at
Geneseo. I am sad to see/hear this trend - I'm afraid that if we don't
look back and see who influenced today's music that we will lose all focus
    and vision for the future.

Regarding the debate over why DT don't get enough.
If it's a case that DT have to sell out in order for radio stations
and MTV to play more, then why let it happen.
We all know and love DT for what they are at present, we don't desire
a change to something like the feeble 3 minute crap you get from
artists who are on the radio. These so-called artists have no talent,
and are incapable of piecing anything longer than this together. The
quality of DT is in their progressive nature and so wouldn't be
anywhere near as good if it were confined to a few measly minutes.
However, what is wrong with radio stations playing sections of songs,
as is done with classical music. This way, ACOS could perhaps be done
in stages. I know this situation is not ideal, but surely it's better
than nothing at all or worse still, selling out.

Finally, some none DT content, who out there like's Queensryche and
Kings X, and does anyone know of any 'ryche mailing lists and
    addresses.

Cheers Ian Rovs (note sig free!!)

James is singing the exact same thing he sings at the end of PMU on I&W. And
actually I think he's far more understandable on LatM than I&W. Kinda strange
considering how much people have complained about his live work. Either way,
the line is "Oh that this too solid flesh would melt."
If you can track down the FAQ (Hey Jason, you still got it?), you would also
learn that this line is taken directly from _Hamlet_.

I was walking home late last night from studying and I got to thinking.
What would the video for "A Change of Seasons" be like if DT was able to make
one? I'm talking about one of those multimillion dollar jobs like "November
    Rain". Imagine the possibilities.

It would definitely answer a lot of questions that have been floating around
here. For instance, if there was a train or a bull in the video, then we'd
know what that freakin' noise is all about. (Which happens to be my favorite
part of the song. That whole section just rocks.)

I imagine concert shots wrapped up inside a concept video type thing where one
section shows the whole band in tuxedos carrying a coffin or something. Also,
news clips of plane crashes shown on a TV in the background. That kind of thing.
I don't say that to be insensitive, but that is what the song is about, isn't
it? I think this video, if they had the kind of funding needed, would set the
standard for all concept videos. DT is so damn creative.

    Hi again!!
just finished listening to WDADU for the first time-great stuff. I have to
agree, tho, about James LaBrie being the much better singer. Now-dumb
question. Please bear with me with this one. I know it's been talked about
before, but for the life of me I can't remember the answer right now. Is
WDATU the same album but with James doing the vocals?? Is it a live album??
O.K. enough of the dumb questions. I very much enjoyed the music on this. I
figure that it'll take me about 10 listenings to really discern which songs
I like best, tho. Gee what a difficult task I've set for myself:)
The only complaint I've got about this particular copy: NO LYRICS!! I did go
to Skadz' web page and got them. Thanks for putting them on there-it
would've driven me nuts not to be able to read along. Misheard lyrics are
fun and funny, but I think that knowing what's really being said helps to
understand the context of the song, and what's actually being put across by
the band. Sometimes even a word or even punctuation can change the meaning
of an entire phrase or statement.Yes I really enjoy playing with words at
times. They can be twisted in the most interesting ways!!:)
oh well, time to get ready for work.

I was perusing the jam this afternoon, and to my shock, they began
playing Pull Me Under. This is the same station that plays (pardon my

(luckily, no one else was home) I turned all five radios in the house way up
and ran from room to room, enjoying the stereo and echoing effects it
produced. If you ever get the chance (yeah, right) try it... It's a good
way to make the most of a once in a lifetime occurance.

Hey there fellow guitarists! I would like to propose an idea: a collective effort to transcribe ACOS. I'm sure many of
you have at least figured out some parts, as I have, so let's put them together and see what's left, then let's tab that.
I know that OLGA is currebtly down due to legal problems (check out http://www.olga.net/closed.html for info if you didn't
know) but this is a service to the YtseCommunity. Later, if and when EMI leaves OLGA alone, one of us can upload it to OLGA.
Let me know if I should write out the parts I know, and if we should do this via the list or private e-mail (privately would
save bandwith, but it'd be more complicated since we'd have to forward around our parts). Ok, I'm done. Let me know.

    Later,

With a check I must wait 10 business days after I deposit it in order for my bank to tell me if it has cleared. I don't mind doing this but if you want it ASAP send a money order. :^)

A quick way to order is to go to Jeff Chew's Home Page "Dream Theater's: Lifting Shadows" Thanks again Jeff! This page rules I was on it for almost two hours reading all the interviews and stuff! I have received permission from Mike to do this and my intent is not to compete with him. I am doing this because I realize that there are a number of Jammers that missed out on SUBCONSCIOUS and I would like to help.

    > A note from Mike: > Hi everyone! I can't make any more, you're all well aware of >that. It seems like what Jim's doing here is a decent enough project... I >don't even know how he's going to cover costs because I barely did when I >was using much less expensive recording media. If you missed out on >Subconscious, this is your chance to at least get a CD copy of it. It >won't be the original, numbered, valuable collectible, but it will be the >same music on CD and that sure beats cassettes! :) For the record, as the >original creator of Subconscious, I give my blessing for this project to >go forward, and he might do Acoustic Dreams later; who knows! > >MTFBWY! Mike Bahr, durnik@indirect.com/mikebahr@dreamt.org

Here is how I would like to work it. If you would like to order please copy and paste this into a reply with your info:

SUBCONSCIOUS ORDER NAME: ADDRESS: E-MAIL: # of COPIES:

I will e-mail the first 25 people and ask that they send a money order in $U.S. I will accept a check but I must wait until it clears the bank, so this means your order will take longer to get to you. When I finish with these I will move on to the next 25 and so on. This way you don't have to part with your hard earned money so far in advance of receiving your shipment. If you don't have the money now you may ask to be put on the WAIT order list. What this means is I will WAIT for you to e-mail me when you are able to send the money and I will then put you in the next block. I ask that people do this so I know in advance how many blank CD's I need to purchase.

    To serve and to PROGRESS

    >Speed metal, Doom metal, Death metal, Thrash, Rock, Metal, Hard Rock, >Rock-n-Roll, Industrial, Techno, Prog-rock, Prog-metal, Ambient... >What do they all mean? > >Somewhere on the web, I know there's a page that has definitions of about 20 or >so of these different kinds of music out there. Of course, that's just one >person's opinion of what's up, but hey, it's better than nothing. > >But my point is, I thought of a cool idea someone could put on their web page. > >If you have a huge music collection and are in touch with these words and what >they mean, why not put a page together with music SAMPLES of each different >type of music. So for say, Speed metal, put the quintessential 40 or so >seconds that defines (in your mind) what speed metal is. (Of course, people >will be hounding you, saying you're full of shit and stuff, but that's >expected. Learn to use the DEL key, and you'll be fine.) But wouldn't that be >cool? So when someone says that they're into Doom metal, you at least have a >clue as to what it sounds like. > >If such a page exists, LET US KNOW ABOUT IT!!! If not, give it a try. I >would, but I'm afraid my CD collection just isn't massive enough. > >If you bother trying, use a LOT of different categories. Not just "Rock", >"Jazz", "Blues", etc. We basically get the gist of those already. > >Just thought I'd throw this idea out into the ring to see if anyone reacts to >it. Any takers?

Well, I have some space on my WWW server for my "mosh Pit" home page, but I'd at least like to put a written definition of these Genres on the page, and some band examples.. I have enough CD's (1700+) for the samples part...

I'd love some help in this (for definition writing) or something...

Please E-Mail me privately with your definitions or any suggestions.... :-)
