Yeah, it's interesting when you see those. There's always a little pang
when I pay full price for a Galactic Cowboys CD, 'cause I know I'm gonna see
it in a cutout bin for $1.99 in a couple of months. But, then again, if
anyone deserves my hard-earned money, it's those guys....they're phenomenal.
Anyhow, there are several places where I can go and get a CD for a buck or
two. I've picked up Echolyn, Fernando Saunders, The Dharma Bums, Gone, and
a bunch of others cheap there. I've seen plenty of other stuff I already
have in there, as well... Atomic Opera, Eric Gales Band, King's X -- it's
sad, really.

Yeah, it's an impressive section. That whole tune, though, is pretty scary
from a bass perspective. "Scarred" has some good lines in it, too. The
most EFFECTIVE playing (though some of the easiest of Myung's) is probably
in "Learning To Live." Even wrote some fantastic lyrics...

Yeah, it's not something a lot of folks here will admit to, but I think
they're a hell of a band. Artistically, I suppose, they're advancing. But
"Ten" was a masterpiece, the last two (three if you count the Neil Young
record) were about half awfully good tunes and half tunes that weren't too
bad. I'm holding judgement on "No Code" at the moment.

The INSANE solo sound a LOT like Vai to my ears. Don't get my wrong, I
thought it was the solo of the year....but I thought it sounded like Vai.

"Mane Attraction?" I thought I was the only one in North America who had
that album! Man....that is one record that gets some TERRIBLE press. I
actually don't think it's so bad, though. Ah well, if you had hair and
played in the 80's, you've gotta be a pop metaller, right? A weird scenario

It would, but Mr. Merlo doesn't have enough time or disk space to maintain it. :) Someone volunteer! It's a good page.
Oh, yeah, I took my Rush .au's off my ftp server, too. The album's out, and I needed the disk space. Sorry.

Hi , I just wanted to let everyone know that the DT Radio Special that I did on Sunday was a success. I played what I considered to be the DT songs that the majority of listeners could identify with. I had an open telephone line to which many people called to ask about the band. The show consisted of the following songs in the order in which they were played : 1.- Pull Me Under , 2.- 6:00 , 3.- Metropolis Pt.1 , 4.- Under a Glass Moon , 5.- A Fortune in Lies , 6&7.- The Mirror/Lie , 8.- Erotomania . Due to the fact that I had only one hour of airplay , those were the songs that fitted the best. In between all the songs I gave information about the band and while I talked , portions of ACOS were used as background music. As I said earlier I made some people aware of DT's music and also I was aware of the already existing DT fans. The biggest shock that I got was the next day at school when I went to my Economics class and my teacher , who knows about my work in the radio station, said "You played Dream Theater ! , I love that band!" I was shocked , I went shit! , my economics teacher is a DT fan , I think they are becoming mainstream! Anyways the show was great and I hope to be able to continue promoting DT's music and making them more popular here in Mexico.

Turns out the lyrics are in latin!! I think it's really cool, and I think that latin is a better choice than Italian which can be *very hard* to compose/sing in melodic rock music IMO. If I am stating the obvious I apologize but Deus Ex Machina means "God from apparatus/machinery" and is a famous item of stage direction from the Shakespearian era when this sentence meant that a special effect was to be used i.e. a contraption of ropes, pulleys, etc. would deliver a person or prop onto the stage either from above or below. It has became a metaphor for any kind of divine or fateful intervention in life in general.
IMO it could also mean, in the case of this awesome progressive metal band, that divine of suprnatural things come synergistically from their equipment (and them)??? reference the ideas behind the lyric in RUSH's Spirit of Radio.
P.S. Gladium caeli means "sword of the heavens" or "sword of the skies"
Enjoy DEM, I think they are great!

That's what I think when I listen to my copy...especially the last track. You know the song on there called "Give Up The Ghost" is talking about Tony Iommi...Geezer got sick of Tony and wrote at least that song about it.

Dude, if you like gzr, you will love FF TEN TIMES more than gzr (even though gzr is cool). Heavy as SHIT and Demanufacture is a little more unique than most "death/doom" stuff. Their first album Soul of a New Machine is more raw and along the lines of straight death metal and the song Martyr on it kicks ass to no end! They also have a pretty cool ep out called Fear is the Mindkiller, which is a few songs from Soul remixed into techno/industrial stuff, which is really neat to hear. I have also, from a reliable source, that they are now starting to work on yet another album, hopefully it will kick ass as much as demanufacture does! How did that title get on my first jam? Sorry if I misled anyone but that was the title of my second jam which should show up on digest 1824. Then I saw information was already posted by Bernd himself on the list.
God, I'm new to the list and I'm having a terrible start. But some folks liked the conversion story thing, maybe it'll start a thread. Where were you the first time you heard DT?

I always find it interesting when this type of thread reappears. Without wasting time addressing the obvious fact that music is intensely personal, and for the same reason people find Dream Theater inaccessible due to James, I find a hundred other bands inaccesible by the same standard of measure, it also seemings glaringly obvious that Dream Theater must be currently gratified with the music they are making, and that music features James on vox.
My prejudices are clear in any conversation about voice, I am a vocalist. I have been training in classical voice technique for three years, and from a purely techinical standpoint I feel confident in saying there are few singers that thrill me like James does. Technique does not now, nor has it ever been preclusive of emotion. Quite the contrary, when technique is applied correctly, it heightens the emotional intensity - and this discussion must, in my mind, never singularly be dominated by range, volume, or the element of roughness that adds the well known screetch to the vocalist's tone.
Yes, James will compromise a vowel here and there, and every night is not his best. I have seen him twice, and both times he was perfect. But to address the former ideas, vowels are sometimes opened because opening the throat can be a voice saving strategy when a vocalist is trying to preserve his throat in a tour environment. A biological instrument is more adversely affected by sleep deprivation, continuous use, and the demands of a regimen the likes of which James has set before himself. These are not excuses they are explanations. Sure, some of the high end stuff even on the studio albums does not leap out in perfect clarity to the discerning ear; although I will say I did understand the lyric, "If there's a pensive fear, a wasted year, a man must learn to cope . . ." the first time.
Anyway, the immediate problem for Dream Theater in winning new fans seems to me to be the willingness of the listener to remain open to the music, a chore that is remarkably difficult for most of the so-called liberally open-minded gerneration x audience. They are wide open to new music that sounds like all the other music from yesterday's Seattle Gunk explosion, excuse me, Grunge explosion. I was one of those that didn't fall in love with Dream Theater at first listen. My story with Queensryche was outright hatred for a long time. Then at some point I decided to listen without imposing any preconditions. Certainly, some people will never like DT, but I suggest DT would become as acceptable musically to all the more current mainstream listeners if those listeners approached being half as open-minded as their music claims they are. It would probably then follow that a singer like James, whose gift is immense, would be recognized for his musical contributions.
