    Man, they've gotten a LOT simpler!! I don't know if I haven't gotten
used to the new songs yet, but right now (only the third listening) I
only like a good 4-5 songs!! Man, I hope it grows on me....and man I
also hope Neil is just going thru a phase...I mean, he's so simple its
almost scary. But after 25+ years of playing his complex (and ultra cool
I might add) style, I can understand why he would want a change of pace.
But what does everyone else think?

is indeed infinity, for whatever it's worth. I could elaborate, but I won't,
'cause it ain't DTC. Trust me on this. ;-)

            Hey!

Any jammers in Portland, do you know where I could find the
coveted video "Live in Tokyo" in the Portland area? I can't find it
anywhere!! Please e-mail me privately. Thanks!

            And also...

Today I was in tower records, and I was playing around on the
musicsearch computer. I had Awake on it, and there was a review. GET
THIS! The guy really liked it (3/4 stars). He compared their music as
"elements of progressive rock Yes combined with modern Guns N' Roses." I
swear!! Then he said they have a fantastic lead singer in vein of Geddy
lee and Axl Rose! i couln't belive it.

I have a small problem. Even though I love DT something fierce (at least for
now), I've been keeping a list of bands that people mention so I might check
into them and hopefully find something new to listen to. Well, one band
mentioned more than any other seems to be Shadow Gallery.

I looked into this one, Carve In Stone in particular. And unfortunately, I
don't like it. I'm saying this so that others with musical taste similar to
mine (see below for a description) will "look before they leap" when
considering this album. <breaks out in sweat from anticipated flames>. See,
I think they have kind of a cool sound, but their songs are, dare I say it,
cheesy. They sound to me like they wish they were DT, but don't have the
songwriting maturity of DT. I don't know, I can't really elaborate on it; I
just think they're trying too hard. That's just my little caviat. Please
    don't hate me. :)

While on the topic of my search for new and interesting music, does anyone
know where I could find some sound clips of Lemur Voice? I'd really like to
hear this band (which is mentioned here almost as often as SG) before
dishing out the cash for it.

Oh, and just to give a little sample of what I'm into musically, here's what
I'm listening to nowadays, besides DT:

Pantera, T-Ride, Tears for Fears, Cocteau Twins, Deep Forest, The Prodigy,
Future Sound of London, The Cure, The The, Rush, Pat Metheny, Material, Extreme.

...just to name a few. If any of you are in the same musical boat as I,
    please email me with suggestions.

    Thanks.

                                     DRAMA.
    >>

YES!!! Thanks Mike, I thought I was the only person in the WORLD who even
KNEW about this release (is it on CD??). It is never mentioned, never
performed live, almost never referred to (probably due to the noticeable
absence of a YES heavy). But IMO (And yours, I guess), THIS was a monumental
LP. 'Does it Really Happen?' and 'Run To the light'(?) are probably my
FAVORITE Yes tunes ever (my leanings are more to a 'modern' progressive
style). I also think that the same things I love about DT, are what I loved
about Tempus Fugit, or Machine Messiah. They take you places that are beyond
    words.

This is a good seque into a thought I wanted to share with all: I notice
that a lot of people here will comment on SO n SO's playing, or SO n SO's
lack of talent or whatever it is that they are focused on. I want to make a
point that some of you, while focusing on the instrument of your interest,
lose the view of the song as a whole. Now before anyone starts to naysay,
almost all of us are guilty of this to some degree or another (especially you
performers and musicians), BUT I have seen very few who are excessive in this
point of view. I just want to mention that there is more to a song than the
    sum of it's parts.

Something in a song will reel me in, whether it be Neil's sharp poetic
insights, his Amazing drum licks, or JP's amazing work. After the initial
HOOK, there has to be something more substanital for me to support the whole
band. Like Fish's amazing vocal presence in the OLD marillion, if the song's
did not support the lyrics, and accentuate them; if the musicians did not
bring something to the table, and create a whole new place in reality with
their music, I would not have been as loyal a supporter of them as I was (and
may be in the future, their new stuff aint bad). DT is the same for me.
JP's guitar would not keep me interested alone. MP's drumming would not
keep me coming. JLB's strong vocals would not keep me here Put them all
together, and you have something that I think is much bigger than the sum of
the parts. If JLB screws up a night in concert, we may kringe a little. If
JP does not hit all the notes (yeah, right), we may notice, but I do not
think many of us would say anything. The song is usually still intact, and
can still accomplish for me what I believe most music is meant to do for all
of us: Transport us to a place that words can not describe.

That's enough on that thought (it sounded better in my head). ON to the
    next:
To the person who is complaining about non-DT posts, I agree in some
respects, but not to the extent you go. This list is much more than the sum
of it's parts. Did you not read Mr. Bahr's posts, did none of it sink in,
this list is NOT solely about DT. It is a place where people who like ,
love, support, are interested in, or have heard of DT can come and exchange
information and views with others who may have NOTHING else in common with
anyone else here except that they are interested in DT. The list is NOT
populated by a bunch of empty headed people who have nothing else in their
lives except DT (well, except me maybe;)), and there may be others on the
list who have other interests in common, like Computers, sports, Underwater
basket weaving, or even that wierd assinine cult rterry has formed ( no
flames, I made the comment solely for the purpose of the pun;)) and presides
over. We share info about whatever we feel like, if someone starts something
that really has no place here, either the majority will make it's will known,
or the list owner will. Just because you are getting bored, or don't care
about some of the crap being said here, skip it (like many are doing right
now :( ), I do; yes, it still takes time, but deal, this is a public forum.
You have to sort through the crap to get the gems. I am finding a lot of
new bands here. I don't even listen to the radio outside of my car, so I am
COUNTING on this list for information and referrals!!

Oh, way at the top of the last paragraph, I said that I also agree with the
idea of restraint, I really hate those stupid replies to other stupid
comments. If you ask me, that is true clutter. When someone says something
stupid, then someone else comments on the stupidism, then it goes back and
forth, how many times do we have to see the stupid "grunt, love that one word
reply, no it was actually one word five times". BS. COME ON, the first time
was stupid enough (but not alone worth a complaint in my view), but the
constant reposting and quoting of that stupid post was just dumb!

I've gone on way too long, didn't mean to bitch, but got into it a bit. I
bought TFE over the weekend along with Mellon Collie, Escape From LA
soundtrack, New Type-O, and last but not least, in the used bin, Passion and
Warfare. So much to listen to, nothing has really sunk in yet. I'll comment
later on them if I am so moved.

    Until then,

i admit my ignorance. i haven't looked at the lyric sheet for ages now and i had kinda got the impression that he wrote nothing.

but the songs you mentioned except fot "the thin line" and "empire" perhaps are rather lame to my taste. i prefer "revolution calling" and "promised land" anytime. hehe, speaking of the latter, it never occurred to me to look up its length and i was extremely surprised when i found out it was over 8 minutes. it definitely doesn't sound like it.

gosh, "promised land" cd is lost somewhere...

any europeans noticed vai's "fire garden" in europe already?

and one more thing i want to know. maybe some king crimson diehards will tell me, how much of "in the court of the crimson king" was written by robert fripp. in my opinion he only co-wrote two of them, so that he must have taken the lead *after* that album. there's too little information...

About Fire Garden:: y'know, Devin Townsend sounds 'natural' in this setting.....some real cool stuff, there's a few seconds in the opening track where I could swear Vai is flossing with his guitar strings, but it's all part of an intense album opener that gets the album off to a good start........ partha

Hey, I figured that I'd come out of lurker mode for a bit... (sorry, I haven't been able to keep up with the Jams lately.)

Someone mentioned GTR. They were a great band. From what I remember of the lineup, they had Howe and Hackett on guitars, Jonathan Mover on drums, Max Bacon on vox and I forget who on bass... CD is at home. :(

Onto the network admin bad guy thing...

    ------------------------------

Now, if the net-admin is also the sys-admin, I might be able to understand. For the most part, mail gets put into a spool directory. That is where your mail lives. There are several different ways to retrieve mail. Some leave the mail in the spool directory (or on the "server") and others download it locally (be it to a PC or your home directory on a client-server network) For home use, most ISP want you to download your mail (using POP or IMAP protocol) For work, it is more traditional to keep the mail on the server. Well, all of those YJ's that stack up (and rather quickly with all of them coming out like they do). All of this takes up disk space on the spool directory. That disk space is shared by everyone who is in that directory (and possibly other directories, depending on how it is setup). Your "net-admin" might be concerned with disk space. If the disk for the spool directory fills up, no one gets any more mail. And remember, each YJ is not a small message in itself!

So, save your "net-admin" some headache. If you get mail and keep it on a server, please save the message as a file in your home directory. Or ask to see if they have POP or IMAP capability (which would download it to your home directory or PC/Mac/whatever) This will reduce the disk space you take up on the spool directory and get them off of your back. :)

Also too, there are some issues that have not been totally ironed out when it comes to email. Your peticular company may have embraced some rules governing it. Naturally, every business wants business related email only. (If you ever read an Employee Handbook, it will probably say so.) But how far do they go to have it enforced? Probably not very far because that rule for email is usually the same when it comes to personal phone calls on company time. Realize that it may not be enforced but chances are, it is in there and if they really want to be anal-retentive, they COULD do so.

Many companies do reserve the right to tell you that you would have to unsub from the YJ should they deem it necessary. After all, you are on company time, using company equipment. So, if you want to lose, go ahead and press the issue that they have no right telling you how you can use email at work...

Then there is the ever present 'big brother' thing. Do companies have the right to read your email? One side says no. It is private. If someone was to come into your house and start opening up your letters, they could go to jail. Then there is the yes. It's the company time- company equipment thing again. But I do believe that they have to notify you in advance that such email correspondance is privy to them and not private. If they don't, you might have a case. (But most of them put it in either the Employee Handbook or you sign something when you come on board.)

Am I causing general panic? I hope not. My intention is so that you are better informed about some of the practices out there. No real concrete rules have been really hashed out as of this time. If anyone reding this is planning on taking law as a profession, plan to take Computer Law. I guarantee that it will be one of the most lucrative law practices out there in the near future.

You friendly neighborhood geek on the YJ,

    Johnny Motown

Put simply: There's already more than enough jams in a day to keep up with. Stop turning music into a contest (QR vs. DT vs. yo mama :)...

YES! I saw him at do a college gig about 10 years ago. The guy absolutely blew me the !@#$% away. Anyone would be happy to have that much left in them at that age!!!

To that already excellent list I would add Lee Ritenour, Larry Coryell and Earl Klugh to name a few, each with varied styles.

That's what is great in just about any YES song. Their lyrics have an effect similar to Escher in the visual medium.

Don't give up so easily on the new stuff, Neil. There's some sounds in there that'll still move (Lift Me Up and Our Song immediately come to mind).

    Regards,

    Jon
