    >Just got done with two nights of seeing Yes here in the SF bay area
    >and if you didn't go you missed out big time.

Thanks for reminding me, I've been meaning to ask the list about this.
Yes is slated to come to Portland on January 2nd (or was it the 3rd?).
I was wondering if a non-Yes fan would enjoy this show. It's not that
I'm not a fan, just that I haven't heard much of their stuff. The only
album I've really heard is 90210, or whatever the hell it's called. =)
And of course the songs that are played on the radio ("All good people",
etc). Note that I'm not a musician, and money is pretty tight around
here with Christmas and all. Concert tickets are a bit of a luxury at
    this point. =)

I've always felt that a live setting is the worst place to get a first
exposure to a band's work, simply because it's so hard to make out
everything that's going on. Any opinions on if a Yes concert would still
    be enjoyable to a newbie?

Also, perhaps somebody who went to one of the recent shows could email me
a setlist, and what albums the songs are off of. If I could get a good
sampling of what to expect at the show by buying a couple albums for
myself this Christmas, then I might do that. After all, they're among the
Long Long List of Bands That I Want to Check Out But Can't Afford To.

    Eagerly awaiting to be convinced,

    Jim

Please don't consider this a defense of MTV. The reason they dropped they all-video format - ratings. How can this be? Good question. The way ratings are computed, they consider time spent watching. MTV's video format had a *very* low rating in this important area, because channel surfers just "flip" when a video they don't like comes on. This would keep many advertisers from investing in MTV. So, they added game shows, etc., to try and hold people longer. And numbers-wise, it works. Of course, it's terrible for music, but then MTV had long since lost any credibility anyway :)

Agreed, it could. Though I don't find it very likely. And it would certainly take a few more years. The internet is still way too slow, at least for us poor sods with modem access. To download an entire album with good sound quality would take days. It would probably be cheaper to just buy the album.

But once the internet gets faster it could be a reality, though I doubt the record labels are willing to let go of their cash cows. And besides, record labels are needed for other things, like studios, production plants, tour managing and stuff like that. And the bands themselves probably want to make a buck or two from their work, so i doubt that music will be much cheaper via the internet.

Personally, I don't have a problem with record labels existing. The problem is that are just too plain greedy. There seems to be no end to their profit hunger, which leads them to support only their most popular artists. This is also why MTV and most radio stations suck. And why CD's are so damn expensive.

So, if the labels want to see the internet as a threat - well, go ahead. Only good things can come out of that.

I loved that commercial. M2 would have been *cool*, but MTV is devoted to finding out what would be *cool*, and EVISCERATING it.

Two digests ago it was asked why MTV plays no music anymore. It is really simple. In order to get a ratings share, a program or video section must be watched for the full 30 minutes. That counts. If just one video is watched and then the channel is changed then it doesn't get a share of the points. That is way MTV is over run with garbage, mindless, immature television programs. They keep people watching for the full time necessary.

I am only 19. I remember when MTV was pretty cool. I mean they had headbangers ball with Rikki Rachtman! Now it is just trash.

I encourage all to watch Much Music (Canadian MTV). They play good stuff. Of course, Rush gets adequate airplay. Thank god.

    See ya.

    Hi jammers!!!

I'd like to get some help on TSO and Savatage: * Could anybody send me details about TSO and Savatage CDs??? Something like the CD title, label, number, year, etc... I'd like to purchase some CDs, but I need all the details because I live in the South Side of Brazil... Thanks for the information!!!! You can e-mail me privately or "jammely" (did you like the new word?)...

Yes' KTA1 & KTA2: * Just before I heard that Yes had recorded two Double CDs, both with live, old and good stuff, I went to a CD store to order these items. And I wasn't disapointed!!! Everything is great!!! The artwork, by the MASTER Roger Dean, the production (Yes and Billy Sherwood) and, principally, the MUSIC!!!! Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Alan White and Steve Howe play the best songs alive!!! The new material can disapoint the old Yes fans, but everything can be forgiven when you listen to the first CDs (each album - KTA1 e KTA2 - has the first CDs alive and the second with studio songs).

OFB: * I think that everyone here in Ytsejam would be VERY happy if DT release another video for the last tour... Every time I see Images and Tour - Live in Tokyo (the official VHS from Japan Tour), I think about all the Awake and Falling Into Infinity stuff coming to us in video mode... Every day would be a DT show day!!!

    Just imagining...

Ok, I know that the Boston show has been reviewed to death, but I just had to get my 2 cents in! :-)

First off, the music that was being played before Big Wreck (my girlfriend called them "Small Wreck" since they seemed to be *MUCH* better than they were in New Haven. I could almost get into their stuff.) ROCKED! Was that Liquid Tension!? I want that CD!

Big Wreck: Well, like I said, they were better than they were in New Haven. And the crowd was very receptive. I suspect that there might have been some "plants" in the audience for BW. "When are you going to be playing in town again?" yelled one guy.

Between Acts: Well, after 3 DT songs, a bunch of us yelled out "ROOSTER!" and were "disapointed" to hear another DT song. Yep a bit of a delay in getting set up, it seems. That song was cut off short for Rooster, tho.

Dream Theater: Well, it was a much shorter set list than New Haven :( No ACOS at all. After LITS, I pointed at Mike and then gave him a thumbs up. For once I think he actually saw me cuz he smiled and game me a thumbs up! :-) Made my night!

In the middle of The Ytse Jam, Mike yelled out that Derek wrote this part. Well, Derek ought to write some more speedy stuff cuz what came out of their instruments ROCKED! It was so damn fast that you couldn't catch all of it...I was just blown away. Derek...you rule!

The stage at the Roxy was deep, but it was not very wide. James nearly got impaled by John's bass several times when returning to stage after an instrumental!

What is it with Dream Theater having to play New England on a Saturday night and having their set cut short by a dance party!?!? New Haven had the same problem! Guys, please tell me that you will return to Boston soon with a full, not-cut-short-by-any-damn- freaky-dance-party set! :)

I think the best part about seeing DT live is that you can see that they are really having fun on stage, that they are all friends and that they love what they do!

After the show: Well, I pushed forward (I was about 2 people back) and reached out to grab James' hand on stage. That rocked! Then I found my girlfriend who left the crowd due to some moshing (I still don't understand moshing at a DT concert). Then I picked up an autographed DT FII CD and a blue Touring Into Infinity T-shirt (I kindof like the new T-shirt design!). I returned to my girlfriend only to hear Skadz yell "Derek! Derek! Wait!". Skadz...*thank you*! I ran over to Derek and shook his hand...I wanted to say something but I was speechless. I heard Derek say that they had to leave. I was a bit disappointed about that. I wanted to stick around to meet all of them, but The Roxy was kicking everyone out.

Way after the show: I was driving home in my Eclipse (any Ytsejammers also on the DSM list? http://www.dsm.org/ ) saw a completely lit-up Coca-Cola Christmas tractor trailor on the way home! Like the ones in the commercials! Yikes...I nearly drove off the road! And I nearly knocked my girlfriend's nose off pointing at it! :)

Anyway, it was an awesome night. It was a great fifth show for me, I look forward to the sixth! :) I just hope I can meet more of the band next time. I'll probably go to either the Providence (that show is no longer at www.ticketmaster.com tho since the Strand closed) or the Long Island show next.

Saw the FAtes show at Jaxx the other night.

Circle of Nero opened. I dont really know how to describe this band. Blues Metal?

Division then came on and did their normal great performance.

Divine Regale then came on and did a great show. I bought Ocean Mind at the show but still haven't listened to it.

Then FAtes came on and were awesome. The crowd was there to see them. Even though it was Apsog once again at the same club within 4months, it rocked. The Encore songs were great. At Fates Hand, 11th hour, Eye to Eye, Monument. A great show all together.

Saturday I heard TSO on 98 rock. I guess that is the closest I will ever be to hearing Savatage on the radio...

I've also been fortunate enough to play on the same stage as my idols, except that the ones I'm talking about aren't DT. My very first band's (Blurred Vision) very first gig was a jam night at The Troubador in L.A., where the bands that I love (Poison, Warrant, Motley, etc) used to play. You could almost taste the history. What a rush! Of course, that night happened turned out to be the first night of the '92 L.A. riots, but still... > You must be listening to Todd Rundgren. :^)

    I know. Wishful thinking....

But yeah, that's a good point about the Internet. (In any event, Bill Gates makes more > money.) > I have no idea what goes into making a web page. I was just relaying information that I have heard from several sources about the implications of the internet on the music industry. I guess space would be one of the factors that would have to be worked out. But let's say that when Metallica or Aerosmith or Madonna's contract runs out, they decide not to sign with a new company and instead make their new albums available only on the internet. That would mean millions of $$$ lost to the record companies and they would be powerless to stop it. Granted, something like that wouldn't be in those artists' best interest yet because the number of people that have access to the internet is not anywhere near the number of people that have access to a music store. But it's just some food for thought...

DT at Jaxx in Springfield Virginia is OFFICIAL.

I just ordered my ticket. From ticketbastard it cost 30.25. That is 25$ for the ticket + 3.75 and 1.50 BS charges...

For any out of the area jammers who want to come to this show you can order from this ticketbastard # 1-800-551-SEAT

I suggest you order tickets since Jaxx is not a big club and it will be packed.

Doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8:30, which based on experience means DT will come on at midnight...

Anyone interested in a pre-meet for this show? I suggest the pizza joint next to the club. It is good food and it is right next door.

Well, if you think Zach's voice is too gravelly on DWD, then you are going to be in for a BIG surprise when you listen to Streets. Streets is sung by Jon Oliva, who did the vocals for "I Am" and "Doesn't Matter Anyway" on DWD. Jon is a whole other *level* of gravelly. :)

Well, you never know. I would hope not. But Petrucci is one of the band members that is hard to pin down on stuff like this. Look at bootlegs...is he for them, against them, or neutral?

I would think that about two years ago, he would have been upset. But he has been in much more of a teaching mode the last few years, so I am hoping that not only will he not mind, but also help us in correcting this.

You would hope that he would see the bigger issues involved (our satisfaction, our happiness, our improved playing, etc.)

    Here we go again-...

Next is James. He enters, a quick 'hello' here, a 'nice to meet you, how did you like the show?' there, some scrabbed autographs and off he is. I ask him the same question as from the Irving Plaza and get basically the same answer! 'What about the Nightmare Cinema?' J: 'It's funny once in a while.' Me: 'Why don't you play the drums?' J: 'Who's gonna sing?' Me: 'Mike' J: 'Yeah...Mike...Of course.' Coincidence? I guess so (I don't think they learn their answers by heart?!).

Then JP joins the waiting people inside. Thank God for the pass, it's around freezing point outside. He's pretty quick, too.=20 Matt approaches him: 'Did you play the Star Wars theme?' =09J: 'You're the only one who noticed!' =09M: 'Wasn't it Luke Skywalkers theme?' =09J: 'I thought it was Dark Vaider's (spelling? whoa!) theme.' =09M: 'No, that goes like this' (humms it) =09J: 'Oh, that's right.' =09M: 'Dark Vaider goes like this' (humms again) =09J: 'Oh yeah.' (humms quickly with Matt) I ask JP, if he happens to recognize me? (It was kinda short, but I did an interview with him and JM, back in 1993) Well, he doesn't, I'd have been surprised. Finally Mike appears. I give him two small bottles of J=E4germeister. 'Oh, = I already have a big bottle.' 'Well, take it anyways.' I reply.

He revises the quiz (questions 1 to 20) from Max Arbot's homepage.=20 Everything is correct, except 'question number 7 is kind of tricky formulated.' he sais.

    http://members.aol.com/MaxArbot/

The guitar roadie Mark has tried before to take the quiz. After leaving the room twice, to ask band members for assistance, he gives up. I have to mention that none of the die-hard fans has been able to give more than 6 correct answers and I personally think people with 10 out of 10 correct answers cheated a bit. Maybe the real fans spend their time in listening to music instead of learning the FAQ by heart?

I also notice two other guys who seem to know DT. I have a look at some of their pictures. The two are Matthias from Germany (not my friend Matt) and Dany from Amsterdam, Holland. They mention something like see you in Denmark, but I don't really get it.

As an overall evaluation, I conclude that DT have become a lot more professional in handling fans and press as in the fall of 1993 when I met them for the first time. They are less shy, on the other hand very 'professional-cool' and very polite, talking to everybody and also answering most of the questions but with less personal involvement. It's hard to describe. They haven't become unpersonal, just learned to deal with more people on a quicker base.

I don't get a chance to talk to JM, my personal fave of the band, maybe because of common ancestors? I spot him quickly with a huge suitcase in the hall way, but he doesn't come inside.

After they leave, Matt and I return to the main station and from there to Cologne. Thank God for a healthy public transportation system, that runs 24 hours. There we meet up with German power metal band SCANNER's drummer DD, who has offered to host us overnight. Matt does their homepage. The rest of the night flys by while we chat over music and compare the European to the American music scene.=20

Travel day 4 (day off) ------------ A trip to the famous cathedral, the 'dom of Cologne' and to some Christmas-carft-faries, as well as an encounter with Mc Donalds finishes the day off. Matt and I return to the station (I should publish a book about 'Main Stations in Europe') and get onto another train to visit fellow friends from the famous Ruhr area. It's the neighbourhood where bands as Kreator and Sodom grew up. Our destination is the 'Endzeit-kneipe', ('final-time-pub') in Gelsenkirchen Horst. The decoration contains numerous carefully selected items, pictures and posters. Frank Gosdzik (spelling?), former guitarplayer with Sodom and Kreator has been copartner in the beginning and Tom Angelripper of Sodom hangs out there about every other weekend. Unfortunately, we meet neither the former nor the latter. Instead we visit two other metal pubs in Essen. One is a restaurant with metal sound, the other some kind of disco where they either play hardcorestuff or grundge. It's a hard world for DT-fans.

Travel day 5 =20 ------------ It's 6:00 (no, not on a Christmas morning). On the road again, direction north. I'm all excitecd, I've never been so far north in Europe.=20 In Hamburg, we meet up with Ties from Berlin. (Compare to his weekend-report, on the jam last week.) Again, discussing bands, DT bootlegs and much more makes time fly by.=20 By the way: How do you cross several miles of sea between Germany and Denmark by train? (I'd been wondering about it) RIGHT, YOU JUST SHIP THE TRAIN ON A BOAT. Neat solution.

While Ties goes exploring Danish beerhalls with his Danish friend, Matt and I met up with Jesper (WGMTT) and his wife. They show us some of the friendly and clean city of Copenhagun. Next time I should think of ordering different weather, not just rain and grey. While walking and talking and during dinner at a very nice place and our conversation there, Jesper and Mide (spellig! sorry, if I got something wrong) revealed us a lot of insight in Danish attitudes. There actually ARE countries with a lesser metal population than in Switzerland, guess I have to stop fretting about that.

Copenhagen ---------- Sound:=09'Pretty good' in comparison to the other shows. Crowd: =09Oh boy, they are jumping round like kangaroos! No chance for a =09peaceful concert or to make it through to the front row, but a =09mosh pit at a DT show!!! Maybe I should have drunk some more =09beer?! Extras:=09This time they really take away (without pain) my camera. The =09first time I get away (spotted in the second row), but no chance =09when a guard overtakes me from behind. I kinda smile, Ties has the =09exposed films. =09Denmark really is a multicultural meeting. Matt from the US, Ties =09from Berlin, our Danish friends Jesper, Midde, Ole and Thomas, me =09from Switzerland and last but not least Christos and his =09girlfriend on their weekendtrip from Greece!! =20 =09Seems like the Danish have a good memory (in spite of the beer..), =09I get spotted several times and everyone I've mailed to for =09assistance remembers me 'Are you the girl from Switzeland?' =09The set is almost identical to Den Bosch, more to the setlists in =09the end. According to Matt: 'He played the Star Wars theme again =09and messed it up.' There you go, nobody's perfect.(Sorry John) Hall: =09Again, the venue is a sportshall with seated areas along the side =09and with a seated balcony in the back. The capacity (guess) is =09a good 3000, but not more than 2200 people are present (guess).

Tonight no aftershow. Jesper has to work the next day and since our accomodation is on the other side of the city, we are glad about the offered ride there, yet that also means no drink with the multicultural meeting.

I get no accomodation at all (little advisable in the winter, except I =09take a nighttrain)=20 I get a cheap one who might be a little out of the way I am lucky and get a cheap one near the concert hall, but maybe in a bad =09neighbourhood I don't have the money for an expensive one. That's the choice.

As for anyone culturally interested, I can highly recomend private bed & breakfast places, neat, cheap and certainly more interesting than a hotel room for the same price.

Travel day 6 ------------ At the station I bump into two people I know: Matthias and Dany from the Bonn-aftershow. So they did come to Copenhagen. Half a minute later, Matt takes me by surprise - he's finally fed up with Dream Theater and the whole travel stress. He decides to stay in Copenhagen for a while and to not ride back on this train. 'Let's go, the train is leaving' from one side and 'Well, than bye, Matt' to the other leave me kinda stunned and shaken. Plannes were that Matt and I would do 4 shows, than return to Zurich and hang out there for a few days, meeting one of his all time faves Coroner.

Back on the train with Ties, Dany and Matthias, I finally realize what has happened. I'm left with 4 days off from work and no guest. Matthias talkes about the Londongig. He's been friends with the band for years - as close as you can get beiing a fan - and has a ticket for the show to offer.

    WHY NOT....

Matthias entertains us with stories and pictures from his 2 DT-shows in the US (anyone still call me mad?), the Nightmare Cinema, meetings and cliniques of band members.

    Cheers till next time.
