Anyone remember a band from the late 80's called Vain ?
I was just listening to them and noticed the record
was produced (and engineered + mixed)by Paul..
Funny..DT is something WAY different than these
guys..any comments about the sounds on the Vain record ?
Strange, but I always thought these guys sounded somehow
different than the usual glam bands on record..

Davy Vain worked as PN's engineer. I think they did a Death Angel album
    together.

Vain were an excellent band in their genre. Pity about the label....

Well, David Prater (I&W & ACOS) also did the most recent Night Ranger
album, the one without Jack Blades (although now he's rejoined them). So
DT doesn't have to stick with prog producers. It's not a bad album either.
And yes, the drums are triggered on it.

    -----

Prater also produced Glen Burtnick's two 80's solo albums before GB
    joined Styx for one album.

And Mr Prater is a drummer too.

Actually, I've been right here, just not up to date on the jams. I took a
weeks vacation way back in December to head up to Michigan to visit my
girlfriend and fellow DT fan, and in the time I was up there, I didn't
read a jam. Then I came home from vacation, and I had thirty of them
sitting in my mailbox. I didn't have the time nor the inclination to sit
down and read them all, so I let it go... and go... and go... and at
present I am wading my way through about 200 or so 'jams. I would like to
take this oppertunity to thank everyone who is posting crap, my endevor is
a lot easier seeing as I can skip 90% of the digests. :)

Anyway, A lot is going on around here, not the least of which is my moving
into a new room (finally got my single.. apparently my 1:1 ratio of
roomates to semesters in school finally equated to something of a clue in
the eyes of Res Life). The new address is on the tshirt updates, but
anything sent to my old address should get to me anyway.

About the tshirts, yes, there are still shirts remaining, and yes you can
still order them. I'm not sure of the numbers now, but I believe it's
along the lines of 1 M, a dozen L, several dozen XL, and that's it.
Prices are $16 in person (not $11 as some people seem to believe), and $20
mail order. Mail orders started back up two weeks ago, and another
    shipment goes out this Wed.

Shirt updates are kind of slow at this point, but I will get a new one out
as time permits. For now, just use the page as a guide:

    http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

Follow the link there to all the juicy commercial crap Mizzou won't let me
    keep on my site.

For any members of the band who may be directly or indirectly reading
this, I understand a few of you have expressed an interest in the shirts,
and it has been my intention from the beginning to give you all one.
Unfortunately as I have already made four trips this year, I don't think
going to NY to give them to you is possible. You'll get them the next
time your tour takes you throught Missouri. So if you're as anxious to
get one of the shirts as I am to get a new DT CD, maybe we can strike a
    deal. :)

My web page will be undergoing some radical (meaning drastic, not
necessarily impressive) changes in the near future, including the
restructuring of my DT page. One notable addition will be better than a
dozen RealAudio files of DT stuff for would be fans as well as a few cool
bootleg excerpts. No, I will *not* be including anything from the Fix
shows. The music is damn cool, but it would not be fair to the band to
include it. I'll let you know when that's finished.

One final note, if anyone has sent me payment for an order in the last
month and *not* received a note from me or a shirt, please email me and
let me know so we can get any problems squared away.

Thank you to the both of you who read this post. I'm sorry I wasted your
    time. :)

Actually, I don't think it was either of you who started the first
dick throwing thing. I'm just saying that when the name-calling

I shoulda posted what this was originally meant for. I posted
something about some guy auctioning his used Dance of Eternity CD for
more than I bought mine for originally just a few weeks ago new. It
was mainly to let people know that it was still out there. I was
completely (and most sufficiently) flamed for stating my own opinion
on this matter. If being called a fucking asshole on this jam and
many more harsh things stems from stating your own opinion, then I"m
going to just have to be an objective poster. Notice I didn't flame
him back or anything. We don't need that crap here. I could've and
it could've gotten messy, but I refuse to pollute the jam with things
    like that.

Just picked up Brad Gillis' _Gilrock Ranch_ and to my delight, I find that 6
of the 10 songs on it were co-written by Derek Sherinian and he plays on 8
of the 10 tracks! It is primarily a guitar album (it's on the Guitar
Recordings label) so there isn't an overabundance of keyboards, but there's
still an overabundance of cool guitar work. :) Just a few highlights:

Track 3, "Opus Winfrus" - Cool neoclassical section. Probably the most
keyboards you'll hear, besides the ambient string and organ parts, on the
    album. :(

Track 5, "Slow Blow" - Derek plays the main theme of this song during part
of his keyboard solo on the Japan PPV video.

Actually, I'm sure that he produced more, but I know he produced at
least the first three albums by The Cars (The Cars, Candy-O, and
    Panarama).
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------

He also produced a lot, if not all, the 70's Queen albums. I'm not by my cd's
    at the
moment so I can't check, but the first time I ever heard of him was when I
    bought
my first Queen LP (Sheer Heart Attack, 1974)

Yeah, that disappoints me, too. He hasn't sung that note for years,
    though.

    Smoking, for instance...

This is probably the major culprit in this phenomenon. An instrument not
meant to be amplified <the voice> performing not just with, but OVER other
instuments invented to be amplified. It's just not fair.

If we want to blame someone, we should blame the guitarists who insist
that they have to turn up so loud "for the tone, man!"

    > I wonder if it could also be genetics. I notice Pavorotti has lost some range,
    > but he is WAY out of shape, and damn old. Apples and Oranges, most likely.

Pretty much, but Pav. is STILL one of the best. It can be argued that he
shouldn't be performing opera anymore due to his age, but come on. Can
    you imagine Pavarotti singing lieder?

    > To link this to the marginal DTC I advertised, I wonder whether this same
    > phenomenon will befall James LB.

James never smokes and rarely drinks. He seems to have gotten out of the
bad habit of the continuous rasp that he exhibited on the I&W and Awake
tours. If the Fix for '96 shows are any kind of barometer against which
his future singing style can be measured we need not fear.

    > I also wonder why the vocalist can't
    > be "turned up" so to speak in order that he need not sing so loudly. Is it a

Well, that would solve some of it, but a singer cannot rely solely on the
monitors. The singer needs not only to listen to himself, but FEEL that
what he is doing is safe/healthy. Tate doesn't. LaBrie does.

I've noticed alot of people having trouble getting Superior's CD. I've also
noticed most folks paying $20+ for it. I got it for $12.99 and very quickly
    from:

    Impulse

    CALL: 630-529-3070

They are friendly and fast! BTW, Bernd, you guys are GREAT!!! Even my wife,
who's tired of my Progrock bands I listen to, said, "Hey, this is really
good!" I also picked up Angra's "Holy Land" CD with bonus disc for about
$30. This place specializes in Metal and ProgMetal.

I received my copy of the debut CD by SG from Magna Carta the other day.
Very good. It didn't take as long as I thought it would. Also included was
MC's '97 catalogue which shows the cover of the new Magellan. Also very
cool. Apparently both the Magellan and Enchant's "Wounded" will be out in
    May.

I also wanted to give my "thumbs up" to Mayadome, who've been mentioned on
here. To me, they aren't the DT ripoff some folks have said they are. I find
them to be a cross between DT and Voivod (the singer sounds like Snake and
those odd time changes). Artension doesn't make it with me. It's too many
notes, too much like Malmsteen---sorry not a fan of his.

Another "thumbs up" to the oft-mentioned Lemur Voice (where did that name
come from anyway?!?). This is a CD that continues to always grow on you. I
find new things to notice each time out. Very good, Marcel!!!

I'll plug Superior again too!!! Amazing!!!

    That's it,
    Rob

Hey, gang. My mother works at a college on Long Island, and they have
some sort of "Awareness Day" or some such thing coming up. My mother
wants to give a presentation on bands that have offensive lyrics and/or
themes in their music. It's been a while since I've listened to stuff
like Slayer (as an example), and I've never really gotten much into death
or goth or anything, so I don't know what to tell her about! I would
appreciate it greatly if any of you could give me:

    - Bands that have this sort of content
    - What sort of badness they sing about (gender/racial badness,
    theological badness, etc...)
    - Any web pages that exist about these bands
    - Samples of particularly bad lyrics

Obviously, what some people think of as badness, other people think of as
"hey, it's only music." I'm not trying to judge anything here. But if
you're not sure whether the music you're thinking of is bad or not,
imagine a bunch of nuns hearing it, and then decide.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Also on the singing thing, I'd avoid carbonated beverages (I know
some of us can't break the Dew addiction). I quit drinking most
everything except water for the last 6 months or so and have noticed
a slight improvement in my singing ability. I don't get a raspy
throat as often, and I can sustain a note alot longer than I used to
be able to. Now if I'd just take up a friend's offer for some free
vocal lessons, I'd be good to go. Might as well learn it the right
    way before I break something...

    Laterz!
