While were on the "this part of this song by this band sounds like
this part of this song by this band" thread, has anyone noticed
the intro to Enchant's Missing (last song on Wounded) sounds
remarkably similar to the into of 6:00?

    YES!!!
I've seen them do this one live and it is hilarious.... during the ending
of the song Simon Phillips starts to solo on the drums on top of the 17/8
riff that the rest of the band is playing.
He said in an interview that this part it's the part of the evening were
he tries to make the other guys get lost... it was wery funny to whatch
how the rest of the band realy had to concentrate and still laughing to
the stunts SP pulled on the drums. (ps. they didn't miss a beat this
    eavening. ds.)

Heya ya'all, I hate to spam in the midst of all the hubbub, but could
someone let me know where DT are planning their pre-tour (practice) shows
at? Someone told me they'd be playing one in Salt Lake City (which seems
odd to me), but I'd be real pissed if I missed a performance like that. If
someone has any info on where they'll be playing if they're playing (the
Saltaire and SmithTIXX said they know nothing about it), please mail me
privately. Mebbe they're playing a gig at Rafters under a different name
or something. It's supposedly next Thursday night.

    Thanx much!

Well, Mizzou finally realized that I'm not sending them money anymore, so
they cancelled my account. For the time being, I am webpageless, but that
should change soon. As for email, reach me at
    shadow@devnull.cc.missouri.edu for now.

For those interested, Ytsejam shirts are still availible, once things are
settled and the page is back up, I'll post the info again, in the meantime
if you want one, email me and I'll send you the details.

No offence meant, this is my personal opinion. I do think Dream Theater
[is/used to be] one of the best bands today. However, and I think you will
agree with me, much more can be expected from Dream Theater than this album.
It is good music, but it is not good music from Dream Theater. In fact,
I am inclined to think even they did not mean this album seriously. Just
think of the long time that has passed since the release of Awake. Think
of the Dream Theater font whick did not appear. (I don't like this all
capitals courier-new style font they used now. I can see enough of that
all over.) But I do not think they lost the file of the old font, I would
think that they did not want to use it for such an album. This album isn't
worthy of them. They did not work on the cover, which is, in turn, absolutely
lousy, and on the whole, quite shallow. They just wanted to get it out, get it
over with. Many of the songs have clear roots: Sting [Hollow Years], Elton
John [Anna Lee], Metallica, FW, Rush, and earlier DT just to name a few.
There is one classic song on the whole album, Trial Of Tears, two very good
songs (Hell's Kitchen and NM), a couple of good songs (Peruvian Skies,
Lines In The Sand (Does anyone else see Parallels here with Perfect
Symmetry? :-), Burning My Soul, Just Let Me Breathe), and some songs
which, in my opinion, just take up space on the CD. (You Not Me [What do
we have here? Bon Jovi II.? I really think bringing in Desmond Child
sucks], Hollow Years, Anna Lee, Take Away My Pain [sounds like an upgraded
Def Leppard song to me]). The lyrics are extremely lame, corny at some
places, any other band can write lyrics like these.
Really, an artist shouldn't get mixed up in all that social and
political nonsense. Trial Of Tears is an exception, it has great lyrics
(good work, Myung), and is the only song which has a very strong
atmosphere. Deep In Heaven is GREAT! Also, it seems like Mr. Sherinian
skipped all the sessions, his work is almost completely missing from the
album. He never does anything on his on, although the stuff he plays with
JP, and the background synth is good. The bass and drums are great on the
whole album, and the guitar is there, too, but it cannot do much alone.
(meaning the lack of keyboard work) Yes, I miss KM's key work a lot. And
his lyrics, too. (But I'm not blaming him for leaving the band.) The
lyrics on Just Let Me Breathe, well, the one who wrote it should have been
    instrumental was right.
To sum it all up, I think the artistic aspect of DT has really been cut
down on this album. Aside from the fact that I always have to program my
CD player to skip tracks 2, 4, 8 and 10, I like the album very much. But I
have to emphasise, it DOES NOT BRING ANYTHING NEW, in spite of the new
    sound.

Well, I'm sure you've had enogh of me, see you:

Hey Jammerz - I saw Dave mention me in his post (hey Dave (a UK
Jammer)!), so I thought I'd un-lurk for a moment and make a couple of
comments. Forgive the word count, but I don't do this often:

              1) Anyone seen the MWC episode where Al's stuck in the boiler room of
a ship with Peg, while a wild swimsuit samba party goes on on deck
(which he can see thru the porthole)? It was on last night here.
What's that? Flame the infidel for non DT comment? Well, just trying
to express what it's like here in '3rd world Britain', reading all
you Jammers discuss FII! (Never mind Dave - I might sob for a bit
too, so you're not the only one.)

              2) The only track I've heard is the MP3 of YNM - and for my 2p worth,
I think its an excellent song. Like most things I just let it sit in
my head for a bit before really listening to it, and now it's totally
stuck there - especially the chorus. Someone said on a Jam that they
hear strong Leppard tones in this one - now they mention it I have to
agree. "This means DT are selling out - discuss" ==;-)

              3) I notice a lot of fans of bands like Rush, Yes, etc. post on the
Jam. I'm a 154lb fan of Yes (not that big huh?), pretty uneducated on
the Rush front so I can't comment; however one of my fave bands from
way back is Styx, who I saw did a 'Return To Paradise' tour in the US
last year. Any Stygians amongst the Jam catch this? Any Rewiews?
(Sorry if this is prehistoric, but I only caught up with the Jam a
month or so ago. Pls reply privately if you want to.)

Well that'll be all for now; you kids enjoy FII (grrr..) I've tried to
be nice and fluffy in this, my first Jam posting! Still, guess
              somebody'll get annoyed with something...

In Sweden, Falling Into Infinity entered the sales chart at number 14. Of
course, Elton John entered at number 2, but that hardly comes as a surprise.
Anyway, this means that DT is presently selling more albums in Sweden than
    both Hanson and Radiohead.

Well, as you will surely discover by reading the following I was not
very impressed by my first (and last) listen through of the new DT
album. (Yes, I will be hosting an album returning party soon)

But on to the main topic. Here are a few of my suggestions for an
alternatinve title for the new DT-CD. Feel free to add to the list as
    you see fit.

    Sleeping into Infinity
    Falling into a Coma
A Change of Keyboard Players (my personal favourite)
    When Dream and Crap Unite
    Asleep
Images, Words, and 78 Excruciating Minutes of Terrible Music

and now some alternative song titles for FII

    No Millennium
    You Listen Not Me
Perusing Alternative CD's to Exchange For This One
Hollow Years I'm Wallowing in Tears I Need Some More Beers
    Burning my CD Player
    Balls itchen
Lines in the Store (To Return This CD)
    Take Away This CD
This CD Sucks the Breath From my Lungs
    AnaL EEEEEee!!!
Trail of Tears After Listening to the Album
         I. It Came Out Today
         II. What the HELL!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
III. Going Back to the Store

P.S. I got more enjoyment out of making this list than I got out of
listing to every boring minute of FII. In case are a total fucking
moron and have not a single brain cell in your head, you have probably
realized that I didn't really care for Dream Theater's latest half assed

I think I may have just sent this once already but I wanted to send it again and make it clear that *I* didn't write this. I found it on the newsgroup and thought it was pretty funny. This guy is a moron for making a decision after ONE listen. Personally I like "When Dream and Crap Unite" the best. :) "Lines in the Store" isn't too shabby either.

Even for non-prog it sucks! Queensryche did a much better job of trying to write radio-friendly music than DT did with this song. And it's half Shirley's fault for making the sound so radio-friendly - the instruments are just blended together way too much for my taste, and for the mostpart the guitar just sounds noisy. I hate noisy guitar, I think it would be so much better if .

No, what I want to do is express my opinion. I've only pissed you off, and you're only pissed off because you like the song. I didn't get pissed off after reading your post about how you like the song, how it rocks, etc.

Huh? When did I say I'm not a fan? I simply said I do not like this song, and that I think it's the worst song DT has released on an album to date. I will never stop listening to WDADU, I&W, and Awake, no matter how bad this album is. The comment about not liking DT, well, if they were to keep releasing albums that were full of songs like this one, of course I would lose a little interest in the band and become less of a fan of the band. I'd still be a fan of the first 3 albums though.

That's not what I want at all. Echolyn have technically difficult music, but personally I think they suck. I don't like YNM because (a) it's simple, (b) it's not very melodic, (c) it's poorly written - too repetitive - (d) the production stinks, (e) the lyrics aren't very good by DT's standards.

The thing I've always liked about DT is that they would give you a taste of something really cool sounding, but they wouldn't repeat that part so often in a song that you would get bored of it. But in YNM, JP plays that damn riff with the wah pedal for nearly the whole damn song. That kind of ruins it for me.

    > a while. That's what I did with HitNF and now I see that there's some > pretty > good songs in there. There's other stuff there that I don't care for, > but if > my only focus is on the things I DON'T like, I won't be helping my > bands out

I saw there were some pretty good songs on HitNF right away. And I saw there were more good songs on it later. But that doesn't change the fact that I still think about half the album sucks. And I've listened to YNM several times now, and I think the song sucks. Period. No matter how many times I listen to this song, it still sucks.

    > Could that be the MP3 quality? No way...

No, it couldn't. All the lower sampling rate does is make it sound a bit more muddy, like a casette tape (maybe slightly worse). It doesn't change the mixing, EQ, etc... just like recording on a video tape in 2 hour mode (extended play or whatever it's called) as opposed to the 6 hour mode will make the picture cleaner and smoother - but you see the same video, regardles. Also, the MP3 fiile is 1.6 megs, not 25 as some people have been saying. Even at 28.8 that's only a 10 minute download.

    > Hahahah! Well, I doubt you'll think it sucks when you see DT > live. Would you have > the ballz to say that to them?

I don't see what the big deal with my criticism is. It's not like I'm saying DT sucks, or that they sold out (I have said I don't like the radio-friendly sound, but it's not entirely their fault, music is music, and it's not going to sound that way live). And they realize they can't please everyone. I'm also sure though that they realize that artistically, YNM isn't one of their best works, but as MP said, they have to sell their music, and these days music is more of a product than an art.

If I were talking to them in person, no, I wouldn't say "it sucks". I would however "have the ballz" to express the fact I don't like the song (I probably wouldn't say that by choice, but if I wanted to...) It's no different than with anything else. If you see, say, an actor put on a poor performance in a movie, you might say to your friends "he sucked", but you.wouldn't say that to the actor if you met him.

The fact that some of the members of the band might be reading this list should have no influence on what people say. I'm not going to start sucking up to the band just because MP might possibly be reading what I say. Because as far as I'm concerned I'm not having a conversation with him, nor do I mean for him to hear what I say (if I did, I'm sure I could find ways to contact him in a way that he'd definitely hear me)... it's just like if you happen to overhear a conversation between two people and they happen to be saying things about you that you find offensive, well, you might be upset but you have to deal with it.
