Hello fellow jammers,
Please take a minute to visit our website where we've just added the
information concerning the VANDEN PLAS double cdr set entitled "Fiction of
Sadness". It features 3 complete shows recorded at various locations during
"The God Thing" French Tour plus "WAIT FOR SLEEP" (Dream Theater) and "Shape
of my Heart" (Sting; with Andre Matos [ANGRA] on guest vocals and Michael
Tangermann [SUPERIOR] on harmonica).
Take care,
Volodya.

hey, quick question - i've seen 2 jaguars now (the car, you know) that had a
badge on the rear that said "Vanden Plas". did the band like the car so they
used that as a name, is it just a coincidence, what?i thought maybe Vanden
Plas was a name, like of the guy who designed the body of that Jaguar or
sumfin, a la Pininfarina with Ferrari. They all carry a badge that says
Pininfarina, so i thought maybe it was that. What's the deal? Moo.

Dick ?!
well, you got another one right here.. =)

btw, age of impact is really niceee..i'm sure it's one of the best
concept albums out there. great playing, singing, beginning,
ending..everything.. got it 2 days ago, have been listening to it ever
since..=)
on empty tremor's apocolokyntosis :
they are cool all right...the playing is not as complex as dt, but
they surely have great talents. Still need a bit of more work, build more
originality. Is it just me or their drum's snare sound is really kind of
annoying ? a bit too much & too loud i think..

Well, Stravinsky's 3 most famous ballets (Rite of Spring, Firebird,
Petroushka...hold on, is there a fourth one? I cant remember) are
generously filled with odd times. Although I've just heard the music,
never seen the actual ballet.
And not too long ago I learned a greek dance in 7/4. And, Bulgarian
music, oh man. Those people dance in 11/8 and shit like that, and
FAST! Too bad I had to miss the class on Bulgarian music to go see DT:)
Oh yeah, how could I forget, all those lucky people who got to dance
to Zappa's 'The Black Page'. :)

Dear fellows.
I'd like to send a reminder to all Brazilians here in the list
that have not yet signed the YtseBR mailing list.
The purpose of the YtseBR list is to bring the Brazilian members
of the Ytsejam mailing list closer to each other when that's
possible and to discuss the aspects of Dream Theater from a
local stand point, things such as the airplay that the band gets
in local radios or even MTV Brasil.
We have already promoted the 1st Brazilian YtseGathering, on
this past Saturday, with the presence of 10 members. We'll be
designing an official homepage soon, where the pictures taken at
this event will eventually show up. You'll soon be able to see
what yours truly looks like :-).
We're planning on meet each other again on September 26, when,
hopefully, Dream Theater will be playing here in Sao Paulo.
We're already thinking of having our own t-shirts.
Basically, that's it.
If you want to subscribe to our list, please, send an empty
email to <rbrito-ytsebr-request@linux.ime.usp.br>, with subject
line "subscribe" (without the quotes; the process is automatic).
See you on YtseBR, Roger...
P.S.: The official language of the list is Portuguese, but posts in
English are also welcome.

Hey, My question pertains to the Mike Portnoy's monitor system. In my band, we've been experimenting with different monitoring ideas for our drummer. I was wondering how Mike has his monitor system set up (It'll help us decide what type of system to buy). I was watching the Japan PPV show (from the Awake tour, '95) and saw what looked like a HUGE speaker cabinet sitting right behind Mike's drum kit. What I'd like to know, is how much of each instrument is going through that monitor? Is it 1 speaker for each instument? Is it mainly guitar? Is it mainly bass? Do you have vocals in the monitor as well as the instruments? How reliant are you on what Derek is playing? ...and what do you recommend?
I posted this to the jam because I figure other people besides myself would be interested too.
Take care,
Peace and love, and good happiness stuff, ~Vince

Hello, Well, since Mr. Carter has taken his shot at the catalog of Joe Satriani, I though I'd be the devil's advocate and give my reviews. I would say Phil and I are polar opposites in the Joe fanbase, but we do agree on one thing: Joe rules!!!! Ahem... Now then...
1) Joe Satriani - The self titled release from Joe features the best compositions of his career, stellar production, and an incredible supporting cast of musicians. Though the sound of this album is vastly different from any other Satch disc, its a refreshing change of pace. This is also by far the most listenable and accessible Joe album. Highlights: Slow Down Blues, Cool #9, Luminous Flesh Giants, You're My World.
2) Dreaming #11 - Phil left this out (I'm sure by accident), but it must be mentioned as one of the greatest ever live works. Each of the three live tracks is infinitely better than the studio version, and the introductory studio track, Crush of Love, is a great pop-rock piece. Stu Hamm's bass work can blow your mind. Highlights: The whole damn thing.
3) The Extremist - This was the first time Joe worked with a rhythm section on an entire album (well, two rhythm sections really), and it shows. The songs are tighter and more focused, as well as not being as experimental sounding. For summer driving, no disc can compare. Plus, the whammy dive that opens the New Blues solo is a huge reason why I still love to play the guitar. Highlights: New Blues, Friends, Summer Song, Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness.
4) Surfing with the Alien - Joe's breakout album and easily the most influential guitar album of the last twenty years (remember Van Halen 1 was 1977). The lyrical guitar work and insane solos make for constantly satisfying listening. Only the poor production and lack of "real" drums hold this back. Highlights: Surfing with the Alien, Always with Me..., Circles, Midnight.
5) Time Machine - Unlike some other fans, I don't hold this album in such high esteem. Granted, the first disc is almost perfect (Woodstock Jam is a meandering bore), but the live material that makes up most of the second disc is rote and overshadowed by the last three songs, taken from the same show as Dreaming #11. Satch live is great, but Satch live with Stu Hamm is surreal. The liner notes on this disc are a treat. Highlights: Baroque, Time Machine, Banana Mango II, Circles (live).
6) Flying in a Blue Dream - Yeah, go ahead and crucify me but this isn't a great album. It has great songs, but it just doesn't flow as a whole. Extremist and JS are similarly diverse in their songs, but FiaBD lacks focus. Plus Joe's vocals are sub-par, and I could name a dozen guys who could have sung them better. Highlights: Day at the Beach, One Big Rush, Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, Back to Shalla-Bal.
7) Crystal Planet - Horrible production and nearly thoughtless compositions litter this seldom brilliant disc. We've heard Joe do surf anthems before, and they were better than these. But there are flashes of inventiveness that harken to future promise. Highlights: Raspberry Jam Delta V, Piece of Liquid, Time.
8) Not of this Earth - Unfortunate this has to be compared to other Joe works, because on its own, this could have been a stellar piece of work. But the beauty of Joe is that he seemed to improve in some way with every new album (except CP), a fact I maintain despite the order of albums above. Highlights: Driving At Night, The Snake, New Day.
???) G3 Live in Concert - I include this because it is a representation of Joe's work, though its not him alone. The three solo Joe tracks are great, with Cool #9 sounding just as insane as it did all three times I saw Joe. But Summer Song and FiaBD were on Time Machine, so why not include other tracks? Plus the Vai songs are insane, as are the jams tracks that close the disc making it well woth buying. I wouldn't ranks this in with Joe's other material only because it doesn't seen appropriate to do so.

I'm sending this from my new e-mail account, which is razi@ucs.net. Don't send anything to jrasi@bigfoot.com just yet....
The shirts are done and ready to go. Scanned samples of the front and back are on my page.
To order a shirt from anywhere in the continental U.S., send a check or money order for $18, made out to Joshua Rasiel. You can send cash at your own risk, but make sure you wrap it in paper first. On an index card or piece of paper, include your name, phone number, e-mail address, and at the top, the size you want. If you don't specify, I'll send you an extra large. Make sure to include the other info so I can contact you if I have to. Send all of this to:
Joshua Rasiel 5 Brookhill Drive West Nyack, NY 10994
When I get your dough, I'll put your shirt in the mail. It will arrive in one of those extra-sturdy fabric woven Priority Mail envelopes(you ever try to tear one of those? they're like kevlar!). If you live outside the continental U.S., I've made a table of the various postage rates; this table will soon be on the page. Find the amount that corresponds to your country and add it to the base price, which is $15. And of course, if you live near me, you can just get one for the $15 if you want to pick it up or something.
You don't need to e-mail me neccesarily, you know. Those of you that have requested special sizes, I'm working on it. Otherwise, you can just send in your payment. But of course, feel free to e-mail me with any and all questions. As well you should. Buyer Beware and all that.
Ok, then. Go!

(sorry for the lack of DTC, but i know there are some GC fans on here, and the CD comes out in 3 weeks!!!!!!)
Galactic Cowboys _At the End of the Day_ Metal Blade Records: c.1998 Release Date: September 22, 1998
"Music of Galactic Proportions..."
Well, I've really got nothing to say... nothing to say. Why is there nothing to say..?
Well, actually, I've got something to say... this CD truly rocks!!!! The Galactic Cowboys continue to make their music fun, happy, sad, serious (well, sometimes it's gotta happen), and overall a chunkified breakfast of everything good about metal, hard modern rock, punk, acoustic rock, the Beatles, and... even a bit of growling & feedback (for those who have set dreams of going deaf by the turn of the century).
It starts off with Nothing to Say... great opening, Wally... and an excellent catchy chorus (ya know, the GC-kind of chorus that keeps you singing all day at work and until the wee-hours of the morning). The next song, Ants, is supposedly their first single from the new album. It was easily an early favorite of mine, even before I heard that it'd be the first single. It's a very well-written rock song. It's got a great chorus and a superb use of Ben's lead vocal talent, as well as the marquee GC backing vocals. This is a song that SHOULD get some good airplay. But as we know, this is gonna take some hard work by the band, label, and the fans if radio is gonna play it. This one is worthy of frequent calls to radio stations... moreso than some of the songs on prior albums. Honestly, I think it's that good of a song.
"But don't take my word for it!" -L. Burton, Reading Rainbow.
The Machine Fish Suite - which fills half of the disk - is a great story of the GC's past, as well as having some great songs that are also some really great songs on their own. Where Do I Sign? and Mr. Magnet and, of course, Ranch on Mars Pt.2 (Set Me Free) are some of my favs from that medley. Also, noteworthy from the MF Suite, is Bright Horizons. The chorus cracks me up. It sounds like a really quick country hoedown, of sorts. I don't know if it was supposed to, but it does. Also, of GC musical hilarities, the "1-2-3... chunka-chunka-chunka..." thing near the end of the song is just one of those idiosyncrasies that always reminds me why I like their music so much (like the middle part of SIYF's "Where Are You Now?" does). They always seem to catch you off guard, and I was amused (sorry, had to). The verses for Bright Horizons also bring some lyrics in that allude to GC's earlier lyrics-- definitely bringing the GC-personal element into the medley.
Shine and The Shape are some of my early favorites as well... great choruses, vocals, etc. Another catchy mix of vocals that leave your conscience reciting the words all day. The end of the album is done in a way that they haven't done before. They end it on a somber instrumental note. Through is a mellow-er song, sort of like "Arrow" or "My Life" were to prior albums. Then that goes into the instrumental title track, a nice "after-album mint."
One bad thing about the CD: The Japanese bonus track is an utterly amazing all-acoustic song. Things They Couldn't Say is great- an it is a unique twist compared to GC's mainly "full rockin' love" style. As far as I know, they haven't done an ALL acoustic song like this. A true treat for the Japanese GC fans, and those who shell out bucks for the Import CD. Maybe we can convince Metal Blade to release a US maxi-single of Ants with all of the b-sides (like "It's Raining," "Every Knee" and "Things They Couldn't Say"). Hey, maybe it's time for an email to Metal Blade... hehehe...
Other songs not directly mentioned in the review (mainly due to space, and this short review is getting, well, "unshort"): Puppet Show, Never Understand, Young Man's Dream, and It's Not Over. All great songs. Overall, I'd say this album has the strength of their Metal Blade-era releases, the production which I think is a tad better than on their last two, the allusion to their Geffen-days (vocally and lyrically), the strong emphasis on vocals and great guitars (like always), and an overall balance in styles of songs that I think is unique for this release. I hate trying to say which GC album is better, mainly because all of them have so much good stuff to love. This one is as easy to love as their prior CDs, and a great way to get your friends, family, phoneline repairmen, and bus drivers into some great music... assuming you were able to bring your stereo system on the metro bus with you. OK- well, at least you could drive along side the bus, with your car stereo blazing out until the End of the Day....
Congrats to Ben, Monty, Alan, and Wally for still being, well, the Galactic Cowboys!!! And, of course, this reviewer is extremely biased- being a huge fan of the band. But again, remember Mr. Burton's wonderful words of wisdom...

Hi everybody. Just wanted to ask a question about the Deep Purple show on the 28 for those of you who were also there... Right before Dream Theater came on, they were playing some cool keyboard organ stuff; does anybody know what that was? It sounded really interesting, and I have no clue what it was.
For those interested: the show was really awesome. I had never seen any of these bands play before. Dream Theater played first. It seemed like a pretty basic set. They played New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, and some other songs. They sounded great, except there was a rumbling problem at the beginning of their set where the bass caused it to feel like there was an Earth Quake... I think it was because of Deep Purples' speaker system. It looked like they broke off a chunk of the Wall Of Sound, and stuck it in the club. Deep Purple is, by the way, in the Guiness Book Of World Records for being the loudest band. No kidding. I think they're probably all deaf by now. ;-) Anyways, Deep Purple also put on a pretty good show. ELP was very interesting; I'd never listened to them much before, but they were pretty good. I'm gonna stop typing now, so I don't bore everyone too much. <|8^)
