For all you seven string lovers out there, I've got some good news for
you. My friend who works at a music store informed me that they got the
new Ibanez catalog, and they now have a fixed-bridge RG 7-String model
that lists for about $999, so the final price will probably be about $750
without the case! Finally an affordable 7-string. Thinking about selling
my ESP to get this one.

NDTC: Does anyone know a good site where I can find some newer Type O
Negative bootlegs? I've been looking for one and I can't seem to find
    any. Thanks.

BTW: I've been seeing some extra copies of the Hollow Years single around
here for $11, so if somebody who can't seem to find one wants to send $12
($1 for shipping) I will gladly send it down to ya. Later.

    Hi!

I just wanted to tell you all, that there are some nice
pictures on the WWW-site of our band Superior now.
    Have a look at http://gaia.owl.de/~fine/superior.html
and go to the "NEW" pictures link at the top of the
page. The pictures were taken on our last tour in
November when we were touring in France.

There is also a picture of our singer Michael with
a Superior T-shirt (finally one is available on
the net!!!). Have a look at it and if you're interested
just tell me, ok? We have some shirts left. :)

For all those who wonder what's up with us:
We'll be in studio from the 23rd March to the 7th April
to record our next CD. Three weeks later we'll do the
mix and the CD will come out in late August.
Just to keep you updated... :)

    Bye

If anyone's interested, I recently came across a magazine (a real one,
printed on paper) based in the UK which tends to be extremely pro-DT
(and much of our other favourite music).

It's called Hard RoxX (sic). In recent months they've given extremely good
reviews of FII and the London gig, as well as giving copious amounts of
coverage to other stuff like Vanden Plas, Fates Warning, Savatage, and
other bands which may appeal to ytsejammers. Apparently the next issue
has an interview with Vanden Plas.

Anyway, apparently it's easier to get hold of this abroad than in its
home country, but British jammers should be able to find it if they look
    around.

A little bit of support for this publication wouldn't go amiss, especially
as it's the only British rock magazine which realises that DT actually
    exist!

Yet my friends who make fun of my musical tastes on a daily basis actually like the song. One of them even said it was, "Awesome." I don't know...I just find it weird that non-DT fans like a DT song more than most DT fans. ..Rob... >>

I'm with you, Rob. There seems to be a certain amount of snobbery here(duh..) with regards to anything that might give DT more than the (admittedly large) cult following that they have now. I, personally, think that YNM is a great song. It is the song that 'hooked' me to FII initially, and I think that it may be the song that attracts even more people to the "Progressive" genre, although I still don't know what that label is supposed to mean. To me, it is music, I enjoy it, end of story.

No I'm not a new fan, I've been into the band since I&W. I also think that You Or Me is a great song, but I really like the harmonies of YNM.

That's something I'd rather *not* see.

Man, pull the corn-cob out. You make it sound like its my way or no way. I was making a _suggestion_ (which if you look up the definition has nothing to do with being narcissistic). You see, Pat, FAQ stands for Frequently Asked Questions. To my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong since you have such vast knowledge of our universe), these are the questions to common questions that people are asking. If you look over the past few hundred Jams, you will see that a lot people have asked about equipment and music related issues. I was almost getting sick about all the discussion about Derek's keyboard (what kind of Trinity, etc.). To me, if people are asking such things, shouldn't they be in the FAQ, especially since they relate to the MUSIC of DT (which your underwear example ends up being a meaningless argument)? Isn't that what most of the FAQ questions deal with? Are there any questions on there that deal with the clothes they wear? Or the names of their kids? To my knowledge, it deals with their MUSIC. So, it is perfectly reasonable to consider adding such things to the FAQ as I suggested. How many times have people asked about the instruction videos and sheet music? Same thing again. By close examination of the FAQ, you will see that it deals with the MUSIC of DT (and that is not what I say, check it out yourself...prove me wrong...give me a percentage of the items that are non-musically related in the FAQ).

And while I consider some of the things trivial, I nevertheless find them interesting (and would hope they always stay included and up-to-date).

    >>I mean, think about it....here is a person who will have some contact >>with the band. Isn't it about time we started using that power for more >>information that just "was that sample at the beginning or end of Dead >>Poet's Society, Mike?" > >Translation: Isn't it time we start abusing that power a little bit more >and annoying Mike to give us more and more info until we piss him off so >bad the entire band begins to shun us and encourage other fans to spit on >us at concerts? > >Okay, maybe that's a little extreme, but.... > >It's the same as the petitions. Because of some "connection" with a band >member, suddenly people think we have a magical "power". News flash: We >don't. We're just the extremely-rabid, moderately-computer-literate, >flame-suit-wearing Dream Theater fans. My suggestion would be not to abuse >what little "power" we *do* have.

We would start pissing Mike off if we did as you suggest and ask about stupid things like underwear. The guy is a professional musician. He likes talking about music. I fear he will start getting ticked at having to answer all these questions about samples. To me that is abusing the "power." Ask about things that 2 people are curious about. Or how about this:

FAQ Moderator: Mike, it has been rumored for the 27th time that Kevin is joining the band again. Any truth to that? or FAQ Moderator: Mike, many Jammers feel that **** sample came from **** time in **** movie. Can you confirm this?

Now if I was Mike, I'd get tired very quickly of answering questions like these before I ever would questions like:

FAQ Moderator: Mike, can you help us document the equipment you used on FII?

Oh, but there I go again, using that "I" word. I beg your forgiveness. Will you God...oh, I mean Pat please tell us what should be in the FAQ instead?

Maybe I should just start a "musician's only" FAQ of DT. That way all the items about DT of interest to the many musicians out there will be in FAQ form.

hey nick, and the rest of the jam--

i was offended by your post, and i blew my stack on the jam. sorry. bad move. i wanted to let you know, really recently, a close friend of mine went through a really brutal experience, and your post really struck way too close to home. seriously, guy, rape is the most horrible thing, and after seeing how it wrecks lives and families, i'm telling you, there is nothing to laugh about. i know you were joking, were urged to post (another big show of ignorance), but please, man, for the sake of every chick jammer, for everyone whose been victimized, please rethink that.

if my attempt to impress the horror of it went overboard, like i said, i'm sorry. but all i could think was, man, this kills me, because if my friend were reading this right now, she'd be broken down. and if any chick jammer has gone through this, dude, even in joking, you're illuminating that callous guy attitude that causes these crimes. (i'm not saying from you, but from the sick fucks that actually do shit like this).

think of this: one in four chicks in the US is raped in their life. one in four! scary, scary shit. the thought of it blows me away, and when you do stop and think about it, the laughter of the parody dies. real fast.

don't wanna come off as holier-than-thou or anything, because i have no problems with jokes about tons of shit that i think is important. whatever. but when we talk about rape, that's the most serious shit, and glamourizing, poking fun at it, ANYTHING, is as wrong as anyone can be.

I get back to read my e-mail today and my user file was full because of a stupid returned message that took ALL the space up so I had to sacrifice loads of e-mails, and the last few Ytse Jams were in it!!! I'd like to go back to that page if anyone could be kind enough to e-mail the address to me. Thanking you all in advance, Chris Parnham P.S. I've just heard the MP3 for "Speak To Me" and I love it.

    Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 12:32:15 -0500 From: erodger@fore.com To: ytsejam@ax.com Subject: KAI selling cheap CDRs Message-ID: <3.0.3.32.19980204123215.00909590@mailhost.eng.fore.com>

Mike, First of all, I don't live with my parents, however, my two daughters do. Secondly, I'm not in with any blank media company, but I ordered a bunch when I found a good price on them, and they've already paid for themselves with some other projects (i.e. the Wildhearts and L.A. Guns stuff). Since I have a bunch of media left, I figured I'd make good on it by offering dupes of already done boots for cheap. I charged a lot for the LA Guns and Wildhearts CDs, because I put those together from cassette sources, and put a lot of hours into improving the quality. But all of these DT boots are already done, and no time will be wasted on pre-burn mastering. I'll just stick the discs in, hit enter, and go watch TV.

A couple other things to consider: I'm not putting any time or money into liners, artwork, CD labels... People are getting a blank looking CDr, with a typed setlist - because that's what they're paying for. I do have a full time job, 999 other hobbies, along with being a dad to a 3 year old and a 1 year old, so I don't have the time to waste on liners and labels. I'm also not charging people for the electricity used on their CD, because my computer would be sucking up that electricity anyway, so it might as well be cutting CDs.

    > One of several things will happen: you probably are keeping a full time >job to offset the costs,

Um, no. I'm keeping a full time job because NT administration is one of my hobbies, and it happens to be the only one that pays me what I'm worth. Collecting music and this new digital audio stuff (i.e. CD duplication) are other hobbies of mine. Like all of my interests, I'll get sick of this one in a while, and I'll quit for a few months, and pick it back up again when I feel like it.

    >but you'll quickly find yourself with no time >for it. You'll either have to hike prices to keep afloat financially, or >your backlogs will make mine look like a wait at McDonalds, or you'll >have to cut corners everywhere. The possible positive outcome is that if >you last until fall, CDR media's price should put you in a good position >to maintain your low price. I myself plan to have things at $13 or below >by October, including color liners and color images on the discs >themselves.

Here's the thing Mike; because of you and Ryan and everyone else out there making CDrs now, I'm not expecting to get 1000 orders within the next week. If that happens, then you're right, I'll be up shit creek, and everyone will either have to deal with waiting, or they'll get their money back. I'm expecting to get a modest, manageble round of orders, to basically put enough room back on my credit card to order another bulk of media.

When you lower you prices to $13, I won't be able to compete. Remember that my product isn't of the same quality as yours. If people can choose between full color liners for $13, or a blank, generic looking CDr for $10, then it's obvious what they'll pick. At that point, I'll either have to lower my prices to get any orders, or just hang it up. Unlike you, I won't mind hanging it up, because I don't depend on this for income, and I don't want it to be an everlasting business. Plus, I expect to get hit at the beginning, and then for it to die off. How long do you think orders for DoE will keep coming in. I might get 10 orders for it within the first month, and then what? maybe 1 every couple months. There's no longevity to my plan, which is why it works for me - it's a short term commitment.

    >Anyway, I applaud you for making what seems to be a sound >business move, because the consumers will *love* you, but even as a >competitor, I don't want to see your life go to hell because you didn't >charge enough. It's happened to some large, successful companies, and >it's a darned shame.

I wouldn't even call us competitors. We're offerring different products. I'm making cheap generic copies of CDs that already exist. You're compiling material for CDs that no one else has. You should charge more, simply for the time involved, not to mention the fact that since you're the sole creator of the product, you have a monopoly on the market. If people want the new Bahr creation, they order from Bahr - not from me. I'm not looking to do what you do, because I don't have the time, energy or will for it.

    > Anyway, however you're doing it, good luck, you have certainly upped >the ante for the rest of us to become efficient enough to match you.

There's no need for you to match me. You do what you do, and I'll do what I do. I can't see my project being that threatening to you, since CDr duplicates is probably only 1% of your revenue, if not less. You can't be matched on the stuff you create, so I won't try.

    >Of course, we're going to wait and see if it's successful before we commit >to it ourselves. :) And you may or may not wish to copy my CDs for >people... even if I asked you not to, you still could (they're bootlegs >after all) but all of us already doing this CDR thing have a >"professional-courtesy" sort of agreement not to cross-sell each others >stuff (for this reason I've also stopped selling Carpe Diem), so you may >wish to have that same courtesy extended to you, should you start making >custom titles.

I won't be making custom titles, because you've cornered the market on that. It's not worth my time to try to compete with that (in the DT market - other bands I will continue to compile my own titles). I'll be honest with you, if someone asks me to copy Acoustic Dreams, I'll do it. If you don't think people should get it from me, then you can always offer a no cover/liner copy for $9. Then, I'll have to pack it up and go home. But to be honest, I really figured that because you are so busy already, that you would welcome my involvement in the DT boot scene.

This is in no way an attempt to discredit Mike, for I think he took on a great initiative way back when with Subconscious. Again, this is a hobby for me, with a couple six packs attached to it, not a primary source of income. If it gets out of hand, or I just get sick of doing it, I'll simply pull the plug. I do feel that a little competition within the world of DT bootlegging is a good thing. Mike is IBM, and I'm just a Dell.

Well Brian, as a matter of fact you are referring to Howard Stern's old Channel 9 WWOR series that ran 69 episodes back in '90 and '91. And yes, as a Howard Stern collector I have ALL 69 of those episodes on tape as well.

But since this isn't Dream Theater related, let's talk about it further in Email.

JM <--- eagerly awaiting DT to return to Dallas, TX....where on Nov 16, 1994 at Deep Ellum Live (that place was too small!) my wife (now Ex) and I were first in line.
