Man, I gotta learn not to be drinking anything while I read the Jam, because I
almost just spit Coke all over my monitor.

Yngwie's circles are all jagged and drawn with crayon really really fast.
Clapton's circles are finely drawn carefully, in one stroke, with an expensive
pen.

"Yngwie is God." - a quote I've yet to see.

I love it when new subscribers get the hang of this list right away.

> So Fuck all you opinionated MOTHERFUCKERS.

OK, Tom's the new boss. You heard him. No more opinions. From now on, your
posts should consist only of facts.

"Dream Theater is a band."

> Half of you don't deserve to be DT fans in the first place.

You're right. <sniff> I'm glad that the band finally got in contact with Tom
and told him who, specifically, deserves to be a fan and who doesn't. I
assume that Tom will be working closely with Skadz over the next few days to
unsub those of us that are unworthy.

Of course, Tom, your tasks from then on get more and more challenging. First,
you have to contact every CD store in the world, and give them names,
addresses, and photographs of those of us that are unworthy, so that they know
not to sell any more DT products to us. After all, if we don't deserve to be
fans, we certainly don't deserve to buy DT products.

Then, of course, you'll have to start your journey. That's right. You'll
have to visit each and every one of us that doesn't deserve to be a fan, and
confiscate all our DT material. CDs, tapes, posters, clothing, stickers on
the car. Rent a big truck. No, make it two.

Of course, you'll have to contact all the ISPs of everyone that has a Dream
Theater related account name, and have them revoked. Just tell them "This
person doesn't deserve to be a fan of Dream Theater, and you have to change
this person's account name immediately." That should work.

> Fuck all you self-loving hypocrites, FUCK YOU.

Do I need to explain how difficult *that* part of your job is? Boy, Tom, this
is some huge time investment you've signed yourself up for. Better you than
me.

Subject: Validity of drummers
Message-ID: <4b65f1fa.34f879e6@aol.com>

I know that putting down drummers as the lowest form of musical life is said
in good fun, but I have a simple concept here.

First, I am a guitarist (who isn't). I can't tell you what leaps and bounds I
have made by transcribing songs. I used to just do only guitar
transcriptions, but then I got a drum machine and synth. So, I started to
transcribe bass, drums and keys as well. The bass and keys helped my over all
realization of writing songs, but drums helped the most. I transcribed pretty
much the whole DT line (not FII, yet), as well as some other bands. Just by
figuring out the drums my eyes were opened. Then comparing it in the context
of songs helped me progressive even further. I quickly noticed that my
understanding of writing a song as opposed to a guitar song was finally
realized. Anybody who hears my songs tell me I could have been a drummer
(except for the fact that I can't play drums, they are right). In fact, I
usually have no problem getting drummers to play my drum lines to my songs
exactly as I have written them (egos aside). And I have been in bands with
bad drummers (ie - all flash, but can't play with conviction) and it quickly
makes the whole band sound bad.

I am probably going to get "flamed" for this, but Joe Satriani has the worst
drums (usually a drum machine) I have ever heard. My friend asked me to make
a jam along tape to Crushing Day. I was never able to listen to Satriani the
same way again. Yeah, his guitar playing is phenomenal, but he should "sub
out" when it comes to drums.

So if you are not a drummer, and you haven't already; learn to transcribe
drums. It will be better than practicing that chromatic run at 216 bpm in the
Petrucci video. Trust me. I have a whole new respect for guys like Mike
Portnoy. I just want to bow down when I see him. The simplest thing I learned
from Portnoy is if you have a section that repeats it self, play the drums
differently the second time. It breaks up the monotony without it having the
song sound like it is all over the place.

Oh, listen to speed metal drummers. I am not the biggest fan of speed metal,
but damn the drummers are great. I am not just talking about the double bass.
I good speed metal drummer can do the coolest things on a ride or hi-hat.

The best 'Tones album to get is definitely LIVE ART. Like most jazz bands,
Bela and folks are better live. As far as studio albums the toss up for the
best in my mind is between TALES FROM THE ACOUSTIC PLANET (officially a
Fleck solo album) and the self-titled Flecktones album. For bass players
"The Sinister Minister" is a classic song, which means either LIVE ART or
the self-titled *must* be owned.

Heck, own them all. And once you get into the bluegrass side, get Bela
Fleck's DRIVE. This is a cool album. And I hear that someone or other is
going to rerelease Strength in Numbers' THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS. I'm waiting
anxiously.

Yeah, Joe Stump plays faster than Yngwie, and he doesnt have that stupid
rock star attitude that Yngwie has.
True, Yngwie started this whole classical guitar mess, but there are some
perfectionists of this genre, such as Cacophony...

Yep Yngwie started the 'genre' but guys like Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius)
who have a 'similar' style are much better at it and are far better
song writers than Yngwie ever was.

I'm not....but you don't HAVE to be one to appreciate ANY kind of musical talent! But then again I guess because I don't play a guitar and I only sing I must not be a musician.

Just by figuring out the drums my eyes were opened.

Really??? They still look closed to me.

Damn, that proves my theory....You can pat your own back and toot your own horn at the same time!

In fact, I > usually have no problem getting drummers to play my drum lines to my songs > exactly as I have written them (egos aside).

And that ego is on the front and back too! There may not be enough room left for the rest of us if it keeps growing.

Now WHAT would ever make you think that???"

Sure! Between a fulltime job and being a single parent I have plenty of time to learn to do that thing. OKay...why can't you just stop...open your ears and your mind and just let the music take over you when you listen...instead of trying to analyze it in your mind. You may find that you can enjoy it!

Okay..I have added my two cents worth....

I can't list a very-best-of, but I can tell you what I've heard and how it sounds. The best reference for this question would be Chris Ptacek, who owns 8,261 compact discs, 7,388 of which are from the Shrapnel label. Above all, keep in mind that Shrapnel is for a specialized audience. If you are not an avid guitar freak like myself you probably won't like much of their catalog. Here's what I know:

RON THAL. Ron Thal's style is simply unique, which in my opinion is the definition of the word "style." I have "Hermit," and still can't get over the song "I Can't Play The Blues." The lyrics are hilarious and very very true, plus the solos are just phenomenal. Ron is one of the few guitarists out there who has made me say, "Transcribe THIS? Yeah, watch me pull a firebreathing dragon out of my ass. You must be joking." Heavy usage of jazz chords, eight- fingered tapping, finger-twisting and I mean TWISTING speedpicking runs, and a fresh approach to everyone else's favorite crutch - the whammy bar. His is the style a shredder's dreams are made of.

RACER X. Paul Gilbert, Bruce Boulliet, Scott Travis, need I say more? Hellacious double-kick torpedo music. I recommend the live stuff over the studio stuff, 'cause let's face it, Shrapnel has never been one to set the standard for brilliant studio production. Check out "Live Extreme Volume II." If that doesn't grab you, just stay away from Racer X because ALL of their music is in that vein of ear-slamming. I'd call it pop-metal mixed with very fast very technical guitars. Listening to "Live Extreme Volume II" makes me wish I could go back to 1985 in Los Angeles and hear all these cool MI/GIT- spawned bands shredding in clubs night after night.

GEORGE BELLAS. The Darth Vader of the Shrapnel Empire. Yngwie Malmsteen squared. This guy does it all. Incredible neo-classical shreddage that isn't all scales. Transcribing George Bellas would be agonizing, but possible. (note: this doesn't mean he's less talented or "easier" than Ron Thal, these two guys are completely different facets of the Shred Gem) He takes your favorite techniques to their utmost forms of perfection and combines them in a truly terrifying manner. Arpeggios out the wazoo. Again, the production on this album leaves much to be desired, but if you've ever wondered what the electric guitar COULD sound like if you combined the best elements available, Bellas will satisfy you. For shredders ONLY. His is the style a shredder's nightmares are made of.

HAJI'S KITCHEN. Cool shit. That's about all I can say. I like them a hell of a lot more than I like Coal Chamber. Imagine Pantera with ungodly fast and crazy guitar leads and a vocalist who uses actual notes while singing. New album due out soon.

Dream Theater rules.

Is it just me or is Red Dwarf VII just not very funny? Show went seriously downhill after they got the new intro. Which brings me to my Snazzy Intro Hypothesis of British comedy. When an otherwise hilarious British show gets a bit of a budget, which always comes with a Snazzy New Intro (tm), the show turns into American-style unfunny crap. Witness Red Dwarf and Chef.

(yeah, I know I only have two examples... not very good science, I admit)

Versatility.

I'm basically trying to say there's more to being a respectable guitar player than just shredding. John's already proved he's capable of changing styles and can still play with great ability. My fave guitarists are those that can wander about the fretboard with the versatility of Mel Blanc's voice. Changing from Bugs Bunny, to Foghorn Leghorn, to Marvin the Martian without flinching. If John P. played me Ice 9, then maybe say, St. Agnes and the Burning Train, then went on to play The Rootwitch and play them all with the grace of the orignal players, then I would be quite impressed.
