I will leave the UACM redirect page there forever, or until Itchy
wants it removed. The space isn't an issue, obviously, but he's got
a million and 1 links and search engine registered pages... it'd be
better not to leave dead links. At least for now.

Bernd will be happy to tell you what he uses, but you're DEFINITELY
going to find out that a great deal of the sound is coming from his
style of pick attack and his left hand style. You can go through the
most cranked, pre-tweek'd set-up and unless you're Dime Bag Darrel,
you're not going to sound exactly like Dime Bag Darrel. You can get
a similar tone to someone by analyzing their pick attack. I know
it's a lot tougher for you since you can't watch someone pick and
compare it to your style, but try choking up on the pick at different
levels, and picking from different angles. Try hitting the strings
harder with a quick "snapping" kind of motion... speed up your pick
attack and all (note, I don't mean speed up your picking... try
playing a cheesy power chord rhythm at 140 BPM, and vary the velocity
of your pick attack without changing the rhythm.).
Inexpensive combos can get a good rhythm sound... I really like the
new Trans Tube stuff by Peavey. Similar to Valvestate, with more
chunk, and less price. I use a Fender Stage 112 SE as a practice
amp... it's very noisy, and loses a bit of chuink on the rhythm for
the warmth of the lead tone. I find it to be satisfactory. RARELY
can you find the rhythm and lead tone you want in one inexpensive
combo, OR in a combo that can sound good quiet. If these aren't an
issue, then you really NEED to check out the Mesa stuff and the
Bogner stuff. You may dig the Peavey 5150 (you will sound more like
satan than like Eddie Van Halen through this thing... it is a rippin'
amp for the 6 string thing.)
KillMary has a Carvin 2 X 12 combo that gets some really killer
metal tones. Maybe he can post about it.

    > for good metal tones and only moderate expense, i would
    > recommend the marshall Valvestate amps. they use a tube preamp

The real "tube" sound IMO is in the power amp section. I have used
so much bullshit that says "With a real screaming 12AX7 in the
preamp" to know that it's bullshit. My TriAxis does not get the
ripping pure chunk that a lot of old metal bands got, and it has
what... 5 12AX7s? The ripping tone is only there when I plug into my
power amp. You can get a great "metal" tone for lead and for rhythm
without stepping into the tube zone... I don't recommend ANYTHING
that is advertised as "featuring a screaming 12AX7 preamp tube."
That means it has a glowing orange light probably visible so as to
make you think it's cool. It doesn't mean it has tone.

    > if you want something all tube, you might look at the newer
    > marshall JCM 2000 amps, or the boogie DC series or Dual
    > Rectifier series - then you're talking $700-1200. you said
    > combo amp so i'm leaving out rack gear.

May extend well beyond the $1200 range, but you're really talking
about pro gear and stuff that's USUALLY worth every penny.
If you're not worried about going pro-gear yet, I'd recommend
exhausting every foot pedal possibility, and saving some bux!

    > of the Marshall. Having said that, it could be my pickups with the low gain.
    > I play an Ibanez RG507 with the standard Ibanez V7 at the neck, S1 in the
    > centre, and V8 at the bridge, so if you're playing through Evolutions or

I had those pickups in my axe at one point. They are your problem.
Upgrade your bridge pickup (I'm assuming your Neck pickup is fine,
and you're not expecting the super gain sound out of it). I love
Duncans, but if you're a real metalhead, I'd suggest EMGs.

    > something, then the gain's higher. But I'm no expert on pickups, so maybe
    > Mr. Ptacek could shed some light in that area.

I'm no expert on anything, but there's my opinions... :)

I thought it was just ok when I first bought it. I'm just going to listen
to this CD several thousand times until it really grows on me. I do like
some of the songs (crash course, king twang, the captors), it's just that

It doesn't mean it has tone.

but it doesn't mean that it _doesn't_ have tone either. just like anything, if they do it right, it will sound good. if they engineer it poorly it will suck. your point about the advertising is right on - they hype the tube angle because it is popular, and a lot of the most hyped things are poorly designed crap to sell to newbie players.

for metal tones especially, the majority of the tone coloration is from preamp overdrive and not the power amp section. with a good tube preamp and solid state power amp, you can get a good metal tone if you set things up right. my rack has a peavey tube preamp and a mosvalve SS power amp. i have A/B tested it against boogie, ADA, and marshall gear and none of it came close to the chunky low end crunch of my rack.

the Valvestates have tube preamp and SS power amp, as do the Fender Performer amps that another poster mentioned. it's a great way to get a better preamp sound without the expense / weight / heat / retubing hassle of power tubes. for metal, i think they sound great. Fates Warning and Prong used Valvestates for their live sound. for other types of tones, like the glassy SRV Fender thing, slight power tube distortion is a must - you simply can't get that sound out of a solid state power amp.

the general Boogie mark series design is based on old Fender designs with a pre gain stage tone stack, so i'm not surprised that you need the power amp coloration to warm up the Triaxis sound. that may be why the Boogie preamps i tried with my rack didn't sound very good.

Unfortunately, I was just able to verify Mike's news. This was online at http://www.canoe.ca/TorontoShowbiz/39_sh1.html -- the Toronto Sun's website. It doesn't mention the future of Rush, just news about Neil's wife.

RUSH DRUMMER'S WIFE DIES OF CANCER

By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

Tragedy has struck Rush drummer Neil Peart again.

Peart's wife, Jacqueline Tayor, is dead from cancer almost one year after the couple lost their 19-year-old daughter last August in a single-car crash.

A spokesperson for Rush's Toronto-based management company confirmed that Peart's wife had died but declined to give details.

Peart's daughter, Serena Taylor, died when the Jeep she was driving left the westbound lane of Hwy. 401, and crashed near Brighton, Ont.

Hummm... This world is really twisted! I watch *every day* anything about the World Cup. But, today, I woke up at 3:40pm (yeah, PM, not am, mind you -- and the first thing that I always do "in the morning" is to check my email) and the last place I expected to know the score of the World Cup games was on Ytsejam.

Anyway, this means that Brazil will have to play with Holland. Ugh, your goalkeeper is really good, man.

Is anybody else on the Jam following the World Cup? Some really good games have passed us by, and some even greater games are about to come! Holland played kickass today, and i m happy that Germany lost against Croatia by a 3-0 score. They didn=B4t (germany) deserve to pass.....but well.....

    :-)

And what I really liked about Argentina being beaten by Holland was the fact that they were so full of themselves that they didn't even gave interviews to their *own* Argentinian reporters. C'mon, if that was what they planned (that lot of arrogance to end up with nothing more than losing the quarter finals -- the purpose of a World Cup is to win the World Cup; perhaps Passarela's got the idea somewhat twisted, you never know), then it didn't need all that pompous poses. :-))

Anyway, I'll be very happy even if Holland or Croatia wins the World Cup. They really deserve a high place (well, they've already proved that they have incredible national teams). But Croatia is really incredible, man. Winning from the Germany team was indeed an epic feat. I recognize that their teams are better than the Brazilian team.
