I think the absence of low frequencies would be enough to turn me off to
minidiscs. Granted, the human ear can't HEAR stuff that low, but on a
good system, you can FEEL it....
All part of a good musical experience, IMO.

I don't know what the hell is going on with that CD...there is barely
anything mentioned of it on magnacarta.net, its not in their catalog, and
only one place in my area had it in stock. Some places didn't even have any
record of it's existence.... and the jam didn't even mention too much about
either...
And you know what?
The CD kicks ass!!!! It ranks among one of the best Magna Carta releases,
in my opinion. It is VERY proggy and it is original stuff. I think most
people on this list would like it. My description of it would have to be:
Original Progressive Space Fusion....
Some stuff, like Sea of Antiquity and Day in the Sun is really DT-ish, BTW...

some radio site or something with a song called "His Voice" off Mullmuzzler
and was wondering if they could post it again as well as links to anything
else off this album.
Thanks

Hell no. Coal chamber is FAAARRRRR from from progressive. I owned their CD
for a month (note that). Each songs has one verse and one chorus that is
repeated over and over and over. They are nothing but a meatl band. I saw
them live opening for Megadeth last year. Then when kids in the mall start
wearing their shirts religiously, its over.

I remember it was on the Japan Awake tour, we were playing Pull Me Under,

What did you heard? old staff or the newer?
Paradise Lost at first where a kick ass Death Metal band, with great songs. It's of
the few bands that changed along the way that remained really heavy and really good.
The best albums (IMHO) were "Icon" and the one that followed "Draconian Times" were
they play a mix of Death, Heavy, Gothic and God knows what else. The bottom line is
that these two kick major ass. The bad thing in the story is that after a great
progression in metal, along the way (1996-7) they took the first EXIT out of the
metal highway and got into the electronic "Depece Mode-ish" avenue. I haven't heard
their latest albums so I can't tell you if they are good or not. But I think it's
really sad for the older fans this change. They changed completely, even more than
M#@%^&@!A did. If you like electronic music probably you'll like the last two-three
albums, if you're more into metal you'll better check their older staff.
The official site is http://www.paradiselost.co.uk which seem to be down. Search at
the Ultimate Band List (http://www.ubl.com) to find more info and sites about the
band.

progressive metal. Check it out.

The following info could be useful to lots of people, so i figured it'd
post to the jam. in my little lecture, wherever i put a command in caps,
it just means type in what I put in caps. don't actually type the
command in caps. that was just so you could see what i meant.
anyway:
I use netscape, where you can just type in "ftp://blahblah.blah" instead
of "html://blahblah.blah" in the address box. did you try that? I don't
know if it'll work in IE.
at any rate...EVERYONE should know the basics of FTP! it can come in
very handy sometimes, especially those times you feel like pirating
software, which is essentialy what is happening on adam's site, since he
put up a disclaimer that mtv owns the queensryche stuff and he might
have to take it down.
It's not hard, but if you're a sissy, you're still in luck, because you
can get CuteFTP, which I use myself. It works just like windows
explorer(remember when it used to be called program manager?), with your
computer's contents on the left and the ftp site on the right. and you
can click open folders and drag stuff either way, it's great. i'm using
it right now to get that unplugged ryche show. go to www.cuteftp.com for
a shareware version.
If you're feeling a little adventurous, here's some simple ftp commands
you can use to get what you need done. FTP uses UNIX, which works almost
the same as DOS, because DOS is just plagairized UNIX. Once you're
logged on to an FTP server, DIR lists a directory, CD blah goes to that
directory, and CD .. goes back up. make sure the space before the two
dots are there.
In most FTP sites, you'd start by going to the "pub" directory and then
decide from there. Adams' site is very straightforward. the directory
names are "dream theater", "queensryche" and so on. so you'd type DIR to
see that list, and then CD dreamtheater, for example, to get to the DT
files. once there, all you have to do is download them, which you do by
typing GET. you type "get 'filename'" including any extensions. if the
file is in uppercase, you gotta type it in uppercase, and you gotta put
the filename in quotes for the uppercase to be recognized. and that's
pretty much it.
The only thing i haven't explained is logging on, cuz i wanted to save
the hardest for last.
Eric, you said you were using the FTP program that came with W95. i have
98, but i'm assuming it's the same - a dos based program, right? I just
used it for the first time, just so i could type this message
accurately, so you better read it, jerky. :)
anyway, I got to that program by going to the start button, then 'run'
then "ftp". the dos ftp program came up. now, here's where you connect
to the site you want. well known sites have names, like ftp.funet.fi or
ftp.hornyasiankiddies.com or what-have-you. but you don't always need a
name, like in adam's case; he just provided the IP number. that's fine,
you can type that right in. you get to that site by typing either OPEN
or CONNECT or sometimes FTP, one of which ought to then prompt you for
the address. in our program, OPEN worked, it then asked TO, at which
point i entered adam's number.
i was prompted for a user name, at which point i typed in ANONYMOUS, as
is customary. i was prompted to use my email address as the password. i
did.
then I couldn't get on, because i was already on using my cuteftp
program. doh! so i went to funet(first site i thought of) and just
grabbed the first file i found. some readme file. I went through the
directories using DIR, CD .., and CD directoryname, until i found this
file, and then to download it, i did two things. first i typed HASH, so
that little marks would go across my screen indicating my progress.
without those, you have no idea if the thing's even working. Then i
typed GET filename, and since the filename was in caps, i did it like
this: [get "README"], ignore brackets, and then I hit enter.
and it worked.
so if you want to slick back your hair with fry grease and pump up your
eastern bloc techno, you can just use this handy guide to ftp the 'real'
way.
or just do the cuteftp thing, which is really easier and that's the only
way I do it these days. I forgot all this stuff, and actually the
re-remembering i had to do for this post really brought me back to those
mid-college years, where the little hash marks signified all the girls
that would not be having any sex with me. haw haw!

I used to feel the same way, but now I'm kinda getting into the death
vocals.
Amorphis' "Elegy" helped me b/c it's about half & half. And I just picked
up
Opeth's "My Arms, Your Hearse" and I can't stop listening to it. There is
one
track with clean vocals but the rest is growled. To me, it seems like the
vocals
become just another instrument. They aren't distracting like clean vocals
b/c
you can't understand them! So there's no desire for me to sing along. I
can
focus on the music. Just my opinion, of course.

Recently, I ran into this band called: "In Flames" [Dr. Mosh's FTP] - Weird mix,
I'd have to say... That voice, and the rest playing melodic as hell.
-And IMO they really play well!!
At first, I didn't like the vocals, but now, I almost dig this growling...
(Of course, all death-bands has gone together and constructed this band
, just so that non-deathers would eventually get caught listening to this sort of vocals)
-Anyway....Does anyone have some band-info about these guys?
Q #2: I once got this Bootleg Live CD with DT's Change Of (underwear)Season,
but the whole beginning is completely different, and IMO far better than their
official release.
I actually had to duplicate the drumbeats one by one into a sequenser,
to get a grasp on it, because the rest of the band played in a completely
different signature.(I think)
I counted 7/8 on the drums, (I might be wrong on that) and they all met at #21, or 28.
-So, this CD were lost/forgotten somewhere in time, and I really miss
this killer-part.
Does anybody know of this version? and does it exist in a studio-recording?
( the Live-recording isn't the best)
...And, finally: Can it be downloaded somewhere?

there was I bemoaning the fact that we very rarely get decent clinics
and Mikey boy goes and does a short spell in the UK. All well and
good, but I'm going to be sunning myself on a beach in the Maldives on
the dates he's doing in the UK.
It happened exactly the same with Mr. Big & White Lion. "No, we have
no plans to tour Europe this year", so I get a job in the Middle East
for a year or two. Next thing I hear, not only do they tour, they then
split up.
And I'm still waiting for tours by Tony Macalpine, Greg Howe, Paul
Gilbert etc. Faces that are unlikely to appear in Blighty for other
than a one off show in London every ten years, when they seem to be
constantly playing in the US
Anyways, gripe over.
I'm looking forward to getting Mullmuzzler, Transistor - TNT and Steve
Vai's - The Ultra Zone. Any reviews or news on these titles.
Feeling hard done by, so slipping back into lurk mode

It sounds to me like you've been attending the pseudo-audiophile conventions.
Vinyl is STILL the reining king of reproduction. Quite expensive though...
The digital formats have gained much ground in the past decade, but the
FACT of the matter is: Top quality analog is STILL unmatched in tonal
accuracy. Also, the dynamic range of hi-end analog still exceeds the
human hearing range. But you're not going there with a $125.00 turntable.
