    >DT99 is going to be like
    >Awake era DT meets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart... On steroids.

Awake? um no... If you can't tell already Dream Theater's CHUNK days are
comming to a close. They will still write things in odd time, but the
metal influence is going away. I wouldn't be surprised if there were few
Heavy tracks on this album. Falling really didn't have any. It was more
of a complex blend, i.e. Peruvian Skies, etc... Some songs riffed it out.
Somewhat, I mean Just let me breathe is my favorite DT song, but it was
more of odd rhthym song in 4/4. Nothing too crunchy. I really like this
new style and falling is my favorite album. Metropolis II (the song, not
the album) will probably be a big mood setting story telling materpieces
with a few sick KB/GTR parts. If you guys are hoping for awake and Images
again, I'm sure you'll be sadly mistaken. I've seen it before...
Not that Metallica compares but,... Metallica riffed it up forever, then
they put out a more laid back , blues , groove based album (no they
didn't sell out, Load is far from the alternative guitar styles...) So,
everyone said that it sucked because it wasn't as heavy like their
previous stuff, and DT did the same thing. Heavy, then made a laid back
groove album (same with DT it took me awhile to get used to falling,
because it was so different for me being used to the awesome heavy
riffs). Then everyone thought that RE-LOAD was gonna be ultra heavy...was
it? no, not even close people hated them again. Same with DT this next
album will not be like anything we have heard before Falling. I mean look
at that song: "Tell me what your thinking..." of the video. I'm telling
you, it's more about good mellow stuff and songwriting than Riff
masterpieces now... Don't be let down, just know what to expect.

my take on the MP3 revolution is that mp3 is just a temporary measure that
was instigated to try to take advantage of the bandwidth that is already
available. But will probably be ushered out when the true revolution of
digital distribution takes hold. After all, it is a compressed format,
necessitated by the slow speeds of the internet. Compression of the data
that in anyway degrades the quality of the sound, which mp3 does will be
dropped once the ability to send uncompressed, unlossy sound thorugh data
(at acceptable speeds) is possible. So the real revolution is in that slow
gradual part of the exponential curve, waiting for the cable companies or
whoever to get better transmission rates to the public. For that matter, ALL
of the internet is idling... waiting for this to happen. Bank that it will,
there is alot of venture capitalists that have sunk huge amounts of money
into their internet stocks waiting for those ridiculously high IPO's to pay
off. And they're not about to let it get stalled because nobody could get
people transmission rates that make the whole internet experience less
    frustrating and time consuming.

so.. when that happens. When new cable, fiber optics etc.. is in place,
expect to see the true colors of the digital music revolution. Don't expect
record labels to die out. They will change. Adapting to the new way things
are done. I have no doubt that the smarter more forward thinking companies
are already positioning themselves to be new brokers of the digital music
scene. The will however have to take a hit in the ludicrously high profit
they make from cd distribution and that will mean easier cheaper music for
us. They will have to focus more on the production and promotion of the artists.

My only fear. This is only a theory, of course.

Is that once the dist. of music goes digital that the emphasis on "hit"
songs will grow even more absurd. Once you can start to buy songs
individually then what is the point of allowing artists to produce other
songs that traditionally just filled the disc. We may start to see TRUE "one
hit wonders", bands that go into the studio and record one hit song. we'll
    see...

I do think cd's will be obsolete, but not for a while. What I forsee is that
there will be a format introduced that allows digital music to be downloaded
straight to the format ONCE, for a price. Reproduction of that song to
another format will be restricted, as well as can be. People will have
"music downloaders/ players" that are hooked to a network of distributers
via a computer and the internet. You copy the song straight to a removable
format that can be used with other "players".

What if find exciting ( I know, this is getting long, but I think about this
alot) is with the new distribution media and the dropping cost of decent
quality recording gear, that small studios with smaller budgets will be able
to get artists recorded and distrubuted easier and more efficiently than
ever. I can see "indy" servers running that people log into with their
"recorder/players" and downloading the latests from "Tim's garage". Large
labels that are right now standing in between me and you and great artists
could be done away with.... maybe.

anyways, its fun thinking about what could be.... anyone who has an opinion
on this subject please WRITE TO ME.

Maybe when they change their name to something more appropriate. Is
"rolling stone" supposed to conjure thoughts of bob dylan, or "good old
rock 'n' roll" or even "rock 'n' roll"? Their name and their logo
reflect the message that this magazine is untouched by commercialism,
and that's crap. What the fuck does Nicole Kidman have to do with
    music?

Don't get me wrong, I've always been crazy about Nicole, even when she
used to be fat. But this has firmly cemented into place my hatred for
    the magazine.

    okay, as i promised...
    http://chronosphere.zambizzi.com/Rondo_Veneziano.zip

just copy-paste that into your browser or GetRight... when you download it,
unzip it and then change the extension of the file from *.rm to *.mp3. Okay?
Maybe it seems stupid, but i`m not suppose to keep mp3 files on server... so
in case anyone goes snoopin` around i can say that i "accidentally" uploaded
a bad realplayer file... and i can keep as much realplayer files as i
want... stupid but that`s the way it is.
You`re gonna love this song! It`s a beautiful piece!

p.s. the sound quality turned out to be quite good (considering how old the
tape is) but there is some hiss at the beggining for like a microsecond...
i`m sorry, but the tape is damaged er something...

    enjoy!

it would be nice to hear that someone likes it!

    >digital distribution takes hold. After all, it is a compressed format,
    >necessitated by the slow speeds of the internet. Compression of the data

The way I see it is that sooner or later CD's will go the wayside of
cassettes and be replaced with DVD. Eventually, someone's going to come up
with a creative (and probably pretty cool) way to utilize dolby surround
sound or whatever and that'll become the new modicum for modern music
listening, just as standard stereo took over mono back in AL's days. :)

This new surround sound format would take more space than a CD can hold, and
can also be rigged on the DVD to have maybe a music video (or three) and a
shitload of ads and random shit packed onto it as well. It'll play in your
DVD player just like anything else. Just think, DT could easily release
120-minute super quality (20+ bit) digital surround sound albums. Maybe
using DVD technology, they could easily make it so that you can remove the
guitar tracks, vocal tracks (Karaoke people would kill for that), etc. from
a song on a whim, making it easy for people to remix a song however they
    want. Who knows?

That's something that likely wouldn't happen for another 10 to 20 years,
though, if at all. But, there can always be a way to compress musical data
to a smaller format (i.e. mp3) that will thwart the RIAA's improvements at
every turn. The biggest problem right now, though, is that having full
sized songs on your hard drive is inefficient. The average person still can
only logically fit maybe 50 full sized songs on their hard drive (using a
4GB as the average) and still have enough room for their OS and other
software. In the same space you can currently put 600 MP3's. Kind of a
difference. :) Unless there's a huge bound in hard drive technology soon, I
doubt people will be using full sized format songs for some time especially
considering that MP3's really aren't noticebly lesser quality than CD's by
the average person. (When encoded at 128kbps and above, that is) Sometimes
I wonder whether people can actually hear a difference or if it's just a
psychological reaction cause from the knowledgs that it's just not quite as
perfect. I honestly can't tell (which is great to me!) :)

    That's my take on it.

I remember a while back someone asking about progressive bands with horns (other than the occasional sax) in a progressive band. Well, I found out that a bass player my dad played with was in a short lived progressive band called Flight, which had a singer who also played brass instruments. They released two albums, the first self titled and the 2nd called "Incredible Journey" on a pretty big label (Capitol Records). Now, these records (and when I say records, I mean VINYL RECORDS ;-) were released in the mid 70's so I dont know if anyone on this list is old enough to have even heard of these guys, but if you are, or if you're just one of those prog fans that likes to check out prog bands from its hayday, Id be interested to see if anyone besides my dad and I knows who they are.

Well, as far as I know, Awake hit the German billboard, as it was sold 40.000 copies only in the first week. If Germany remains to be the European country that supports DT the most, we have a good chance that DT99 will land on the Billboard list.

Yes, the same I recognize. Somehow, the popularity of rock/metal/punk is growing again. You can see a plenty of punk/rocker/metalhead guys around here. And they are only around 15-16. So _music_ is going to live again, after this long kinda 'hibernation'...;)

So, you were there, man!:) That is cool. I remember a guy from Sofia was standing just before me. DT played some non-album tracks, and this Bulgarian guy just sang along.. Well, if it helps, I was on the right side, in one of the first rows.

{What did metallica play?} >Well, there were Fuel, Bleeding Me, The Memory Remains and few others but >they are kick ass songs live.

The same here. I liked the pyrotechnics very much, though. Fuel just starts (Gimme Fuel, Gimme Fire, Gimme that which I desire) and just after that an enormous giant flame of burst came up. And One...before One, we had some war-scene on the stage. Sounds of machine guns, helicopters, mines...incredible. Moreover, in the second part (Darkness imprisoning me), after the word _Landmine_ has taken my sight a fucking big 'landmine' exploded in the background. So...it was incredible.

To add some DT content...;) DT played the second part of One here in Hungary...;) With MP singing and playing the drums...;) It was awesome. I just saw that a mike is before his mouth, and he shouted...;) MP rules...;)

    >...and For Whom The Bell Tolls. It really was a great show.

Yeh...they played FWTBT here, as well. How much was the ticket for you (in $)

Yep. That is what we had, over here. At first, the show was to be held at a bigger place, where 3-4-5 thousand ppl can easily enjoy the concert. And then, as I thonk Microsoft held a conference there at the same time, Iron Maiden was put into a place, where only 1-2 thousand ppl were able to get in. Show her Surrounded, Another Day, Hollow Years, Anna Lee. They are not depressive IMHO.

    >Which brings up the question, if DT or any >band like that, wrote a song (I honestly think it could be a very heavy and >very prog like song) with a subject matter that the popular masses could >accept, would that not help?

I don't think so. Here is the reason, IMHO (!!!WARNING!!! Stereotyping again!!!) You know, most of them likes the mood of that music. And this is what DT - Thank God - cannot create. MP is just unable to beat the normal 4/4 all the time. It would just be like chopping trees in the woods.;) So these guys that like pop music like to fastness of it, the sounds of the synths, and they like the sounds of those bloody effects.

Does anyone else out there have trouble when trying to listen to "Hourglass" on LTE2? It seems to play on my home cd player, but on my boombox, it can't get through the song. It starts getting distorted, and then dies. I've never had any trouble before with this boombox cd player...It only happens on this cd/song.

Just curious to see if this has happened to anyone else.

Buy it. Chromakey never gets old. :) Besides, with Mark Zonder on drums, what more can you ask for? :) It's hard to pinhole this album. If you've heard VAST, it's kind of like that, only CK is VERY piano oriented. Basically, just think of a bunch of songs written similar to Space Dyed Vest and you've got it. :)

I'm glad he's releasing another CK album. I can't get enough of it. Not his MM2BH demoes, or This is a Recording, or... :) -- KorgX3 wants to have KevMo's children. NP: Nothing.
