I know what one you are talking about! Yeah, that drives me crazy too. I
think it might be early Kool and the Gang before they got into all of the
brass band backup stuff.

Again the same topic. :)
So WHY these our bands are not known enough in the public?
Heck, forget MTV and similar politics houses, the truth is out there,
not in the TV box! IF we see all over magazines these guys getting
rewards and praises etc..., WHY the things doesn't change?

Not to get this even *more* off topic, but there is a way around this (I have the same problem with my TV). Just hook up a stereo VCR - antenna/cable box to VCR to TV, then connect the audio out from the VCR to the stereo.

Hey all, I did a Sabian chat last night where a few tidbits of the latest info were pulled out of me...so I figured I should "officially" pass on some of this info onto you guys for posting and passing on.... (could somebody please foward this info onto the ytsejam list as well...)

1. I am currently at the SABIAN factory up in Canada where I am developing my own signature cymbal line of splashes & stacks to be available in January of next year......

2. Yes, it is true.....my side-project with Neal Morse is now back on! We are scheduled to enter the studio at the end of June for a week or so to hammer out some music. The project is untitled at the moment but consists of myself, Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), Pete Trewavas (Marillion) and Roine Stolt (the Flower Kings).

I know the side-project thing has currently gotten out of hand, but this one was waiting in the wings for me since last year and with Jordan now in DT, I do not want to do any further LTE albums...

3. Also in June, I will be playing on a couple of tracks on Andy West's solo album. (the bass player of the Dregs) This is NOT any sort of side-project for me, I am merely being hired as a "session player"...

4. I will be continuing work on my latest Drum instructional video which is pencilled in to be released around the same time as the new DT CD (Fall/October? '99)

It will include some of the DT live footage shot in Hampton Beach during

Aug.'98, as well as studio analysis of LTE and new DT...

5. Work on the latest DT is going incredibly well.... As I have been maintaining all along, I'd like to bypass any details, but I will confirm that the music is primarily finished and that we will begin the vocals and the final recording stages during June.

The mix will probably happen July or August and hopefully we can keep it on schedule for a fall release with a Worldwide tour to follow.....

THAT'S ALL THE NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT FOR NOW......

Have I mentioned I also have a family to spend time with??? : )

Actually, this is exactly what I did, but for years my parents were stupid and had a mono VCR, so it would have sounded stupid. I just didn't understand why on earth they had a mono VCR and a stereo TV - then again, knowing my parents the way I do, they wouldn't have cared. My mom's the kind of person who hears an explosion in a movie and asks me to turn down the stereo because 'she can feel it."

She also though Braveheart was an awful movie because of all the violence.

Hail fellow Jammaz,

I'm curious if you chaps could tell me how you feel about Acoustic Research speakers? My friend has a Dolby Digital home theater with all Acoustic Research speakers and a Denon receiver..... and they seem very nice to me. The AR 312 HO speakers (the setup my buddy has) retail at $479 each, but I can get a very good deal on these (5% over wholesale price), as well as some other stuff like Denon, through a friend of mine.

For the money, are these pretty decent quality? I'd really like to keep the cost fairly moderate, as I'm moving in a two weeks and need to start from scratch w/electronics, as well as furniture (buying LOTS of shit like new bed, couch, etc.). I also need to buy a TV (36" probably), VCR, and would like to get a DVD player as well, so you can see where I need to keep the price tags kinda moderate. (BTW, I would like the setup to be fairly good for listening to music, as well as being a nice 5.1 surround setup for TV).

Here's the AR link in case anybody is interested. http://www.teleconsystems.com/Acoustic_Research/ar1.htm

BTW, there is a link on the page to some nice reviews of these speakers from "Sterophile-Guide to Home Theater", "Stereo Review", "Audio- The Equipment Authority" and "Home Theater", BUT I'm not familiar with ANY of these magazines. Are they legit or shit?

Please keep in mind that I'm sorta an audio-moron, and moderate gear will probably suffice. Hell, giving me $20,000 worth of audio gear is probably akin to buying your 16 year old kid a new Ferrari 550 Maranello.

Yo, Jam! I got something to say, and it goes something like this:

Is there any better music television these days than VH1??? Seriously, the network that I despised in my youth has been putting out more quality music programming lately than eMpTyV has put out in the entire 90's!

Is there a more compelling non-fiction show on TV than Behind the Music? EVERY FREAKING EPISODE is interesting! Even The Mama's and The Papa's, for God's sake!!! They can make Tony Orlando seem interesting!!!

And for those of you who are petitioning for MTV to bring back Headbanger's Ball, although I appreciate the spirit in which you're doing it, here's what will happen... First off, they've attempted quazi-metal shows in the past (MattRock and Super Rock come to mind...) and they aren't around anymore so at least when those were about (Circa 1996, maybe?) there wasn't enough following to keep them afloat. Now, obviously metal has made a big come-back since then (popular metal, that is) and me thinx that a metal-show these days on MTV would probably do pretty well. But it wouldn't be Headbanger's Ball.

HBB was a show that featured newer artists but also tributed the older dudes too. The feel of the old HBB was completely different than MTV these days.

These days, if MTV created a new metal show, it would simply the same videos of Korn, Limp, Deftones, System of a Down, Coal Chamber, Godsmack, Tool, Hed(PE), Incubus, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie etc. in a 1/2 hour show. They would probably play 3 videos which are heavily edited and it would be the 3 most popular metal videos of the day. End of story. It would get old REAL quick.

Would we see any of the Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, OLD Metallica, Megadeth, Kiss, Motley Crue, Poison, Twisted Sister videos that DEFINE what metal is all about? Hell no! It would alienate 95% of MTV's audience.

I say quit relying on MTV to bring you music. Its only use is to keep us informed on what the public is SUPPOSED to like in the eyes of MTV.

By the way, I bet one of the main modivations for you guys petitioning to get HBB back on MTV is so that they'd play a Dream Theater video. I got news for ya, son:

All Dream Theater Videos SUCK!!! I'm just being honest - I mean think about it...

Pull Me Under - Band footage, an old dude and an ugly dude looking concerned. Take The Time - INCREDIBLY CHEESY 80's video and Jame's skinny legs. Another Day - A little girl, an old dude and swinging lights. The Silent Man - An old dude looking concerned, the band and a shack. Lie - The band, the city, rain and a tunnel. Hollow Years - The band, a dude making out and various concerned people.

The videos don't SAY anything and they don't ADD to anything but the band's image of being a cheesy glam-band. They aren't, but their videos don't help any.

Anyway, it's all about the music. Dream Theater can make Puff Daddy videos for all I care, so long as they continue to rock they way they know how to.

Just don't expect MTV to be playing those God-aweful videos anytime soon.

If you want rock videos, check out The Rock Show on VH1. Tonight I saw videos by Kiss, Motley Crue and Tool. Kicked my ass, thank you very much. Sure they only play 3 videos, but they all ruled.

I think that's the end of my rant. I'll get off my soapbox now.

- Dr. Teeth

P.S. How do you pronounce the band Kyuss? (No guesses - I want it straight from the band's lips!)

P.P.S. Can't wait for the following new releases: Red Hot Chili Peppers: Californication Ministry: Dark Side of the Spoon Lemur Voice: ?????? (Marcel - is there a name yet?) Lacuna Coil: In a Reverie Liquid Tension II

Oop's! Rotel no longer makes receivers. :( They do make some damn nice integrated amps at a reasonable price. (Integrated amps are a preamp and amp in the same chassis) Rotel also makes a few good tuners, too.

BTW, I've never owned any Rotel gear, but I'm impressed by what they have done in the mid-fi field, and recommend them over ANY consumer grade gear. Every piece of Rotel gear I've heard has impressed me with it's "bang for the buck" ratio. Rotel used to make some nice receivers, it looks like they have ditched them in favor of integrated amps and separate tuners. A good thing.

As anyone who lives in or has visited L.A. recently, radio here sux donkey nads. Ever since KNAC went off the air however many years ago, tuning into a radio station for more than 10 minutes and being entertained has been next to impossible. However, last week KLOS started a "classic rock that really rocks" ad nauseum campaign. Upon listening for a while at work, I was quite surprised to hear a liberal dose of AC/DC, Queensryche (NOT Silent Lucidity), Priest, Rainbow, G n R, etc. Then I hear an ad that good ol' Jim Ladd (if you don't know who he is, you have never been to L.A. :-) is back on late night 10-2 and is doing "free form" radio. For the unintiated (and the youth), this is how FM used to be...jocks would play anything they wanted, whenever they wanted. Anyway, to get to the point here...at about 1:30 this morning I was drunkenly making my way into bed and was about to turn off the radio when I hear *gasp* HOLLOW YEARS!! I think I sat there and stared at the radio for about 10 minutes in utter shock. So I stumble to the phone to call the station to congratulate them on being so fucking cool, and they tell me I'm like the 20th caller who just said the same thing. Well duhhhhh...... Could this be the start of the armageddon?? :-)
