Well, yesterday I picked up the new Megadeth, and here's what I have
to say: F*CK ALL Y'ALL. I think the album rocks, and I'm not going
to take the cop out and say "its a good album, just not for
Megadeth." Yes, there is a large amount of cheese on the album,
but megadeth has always had a cheese factor higher than most bands
(ie forced death-related lyrics, lame song concepts, etc etc), so
if you bought the CD expecing it to be all cookie-monster, you should
have known better. The biggest problem I have with the album is
the lack of shred. There are so many places where it would have fit
too. Its like Dave said, "Hey Marty, instead of playing arpeggios
at 3000 bpm, why don't you just sit there and play the same note 4 times
a measure, huh?" In spite of that, the album still rocks, and it is
not completly void of guitar (view Time: The End). Most reviews of this
album have been pretty scathing, but that just goes to prove that when
everyone says the same thing, it's almost garunteed to be WRONG!

No, it's not a real video - I made it myself. I took my favorite moments
(chokes and armlocks, mostly) from Hoyce Gracie's fights that I have on
videotape, and dubbed JLMB as an audio track. I wish I had real video
editing equipment, because it would really kick ass :)

Speaking of Gracie, the Ultimate Fighting Championship 22 is going to be
in Lake Charles, LA, in three weeks. I wish I was Louisiana jammer #4
right now, 'cause I'd be able to see it in person :) 550 miles is too
far to drive on a Friday, though....

Take care, and hail Gracie jiu-jitsu,

I have no idea, but well IMO i enjoyed most of the songs he sang on Fire
Garden, he has a midranged voice that while not a master singer, hes very
adequate, and much better than a lot of shit singers in a lot of bands. Id
rather listen to vai sing than a lot of the so called prog metal vocalists in
    lesser known bands..

    MAYADOME - Near Life Experience SWEDEN Rating: * * * * (out of 5) 1999 SIEGEN SR-0013 Playing time: 49:09

Mayadome: Bassel Elharbiti: Lead Vocals Fredrik Kj=F6rling: Lead Guitar Erik Grandin: Bass Sebastian Okupski: Keyboards Teddy M=F6ller: Drums & Vocals

    Tracks: 1. Restorepair (7:21) 2. Scent Of Lilac (5:18) 3. Praise Me For I Have Sinned (6:31) 4. Able To Feel (8:50) 5. Pride Painted Grey (6:22) 6. Angina Closing In (6:44) 7. Near Life Experience (8:17)

This is the second release from the Swedish neo-classical progressive metal band Mayadome. Their first album was called "Paranormal Activity" and it was released in 1996. I'm surprised that I haven't heard about them before, as they are very talented musicians and their music is technically blending and extremely tight. They also have an excellent singer, Bassel Elharbiti.

Their music is a mix between Dream Theater, Helloween, Iron Maiden, King Diamond, Yngwie Malmsteen, Pain Of Salvation, Power Of Omens, Vanden Plas and Queensryche.

My favourite tracks are "Praise Me For I Have Sinned", "Able to Feel" which contains a nice guest appearance by Tina Gunnarsson on vocals and "Near Life Experience".

I'm sure that Mayadome got what it takes to be Sweden's next big music export in the progressive metal genre together with Pain Of Salvation. Mayadome is a Near Life Experience!

    TILES - Tiles USA Rating: * * * * =BD (out of 5) 1995 STANDING PAVEMENT SPR-94001 Playing time: 47:21

Tiles: Mark Evans: Drums, Percussion Chris Herin: Electric and acoustic guitars, Keyboards Paul Rarick: Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals

Special Guest: Kevin Chown: Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals

    Track Listing: 1. Analysis Paralysis (5:11) 2. Token Pledge (6:40) 3. Retrospect (2:12) 4. Trading Places (4:27) 5. Bridges of Grace (4:44) 6. Dancing Dogs (5:46) 7. Scattergram (5:38) 8. Dress Rehearsal (4:56) 9. Supply and Demand (6:11)

This is the debut CD from the progressive symphonic rock band Tiles. They have released two CDs after this one, and both of them are very impressive and so is this debut. The band sounds so professional and they are playing with a skill and confidence not often heard on debut CDs. Even the production is very professional for being an independent release. The album has a very clear sound.

Their music is reminiscent to Dream Theater, Galahad, Queensryche, Rush, Saga, Triumph and Yes, especially Rush. It's very melodic yet technically brilliant. The guitarist Chris Herin sounds like Alex Lifeson of Rush and the vocalist is great. My favorite tracks are "Analysis Paralysis", the marvelous "Token Pledge", "Bridges of Grace", "Dancing Dogs", "Scattergram" and "Dress Rehearsal" that are very complex.

This is a wonderful album that is a pride in every record collection. Definitely worth checking out!

    Track Listing: 1. Patterns (4:31) a. The Balancing Act b. Patterns, 2. Beneath The Surface (5:00), 3. Cactus Valley (6:32), 4. Another Hand (6:24), 5. The Wading Pool (6:20), 6. Gameshow (3:40), 7. Fallen Pieces (1:25), 8. Changing the Guard (7:18), 9. Gabby's Happy Song (0:50), 10. Checkerboards (14:43), 11. Splinters of Truth* (0:50), 12. No Failure* (5:38)

    * Japanese Bonus Tracks

Tiles are Mark Evans on Drums and Percussion, Chris Herin on Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Mandolin and keyboards, Paul Rarick on Lead & Backing Vocals and Jeff Whittle on Bass Guitar. They are all talented musicians. Paul Rarick is a powerful singer, Chris Herin a splendid guitarist, Jeff Whittle a skillful bassist and Mark Evans a competent drummer.

Tiles are playing tight progressive hard rock / Prog Metal in the same vein as Rush, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Leger De Main and Yes. This is their second CD and it's technically amazing and complex, with mood shifts and odd tempo changes. It also got a very good and clean production.

Here you can find fine tunes such as "Patterns" with its jazzy intro and Yes influenced riffs, "Beneath The Surface" is a good rock song, "Cactus Valley", "Another Hand" with its marvelous instrumental passage, acoustic guitar based ballad "The Wading Pool", "Gameshow", the instrumental classically inspired "Falling Pieces" that is played on a moog synth, the symphonic "Changing The Guard", the instrumental acoustic "Gabby's Happy Song" and the 15-minute progressive masterpiece "Checkerboards" with its many time changes that is closing the album.

This is a record for all fans of Dream Theater and Rush, and a milestone in progressive rock. An extra + for the great cover and the 12 page CD booklet. I recommend you to buy this album right away.

    TILES - Presents Of Mind USA Rating: * * * * February 1999 INSIDEOUT / LMP / SPV SPV 085-31382CD Playing time: 52:27

Additional musicians: Kevin Chown - Bass Matthew Parmenter - Violin Sonya Mastick - Percussion Mark Evans - Drums

Tracklist: Static (5.43), Modification (3.44), Crossing Swords (1.06), Facing Failure (5.42), The Learning Curve (4.42), Ballad of the Sacred Cows (6.58), The Sandtrap Jig (0.48), Taking Control (5.13), Safe Procedures (7.04), Reasonable Doubt (11.22).

This is the third album from the four-piece US band Tiles, and it's almost as good as the previous album "Fence The Clear" from 1997. Still you can hear the reminiscences to Queensryche and Rush although they aren't that obvious any longer. Perhaps you could compare this album though with Queensryche's "Promised Land" and "Hear in the Now Frontier". The music is intricate progressive metal with good melodies and arrangements.

The singer is really good and the guitarist is a real maestro. The highlights are the opener "Static", "The Learning Curve", "Ballad of the Sacred Cows", "Taking Control", "Safe Procedures" and the last track "Reasonable Doubt" that contains violin played by Discipline's Matthew Parmenter. As said in the press info "the lyrics focus on how the human mind adapts to the many different and changing situations life presents".

The cover artwork that is displaying the music very well is made by Hugh Syme, known for his work with Aerosmith, Arena, Fates Warning, Bon Jovi, Kiss, Megadeth, Queensryche, Rush and Whitesnake among others. I recommend you to buy this CD immediately.
