Someone else recently asked about some old Ytsejams too. I had
said that I would go back and try to dig them up, but I gave up before I
found them. I guess I should make another attempt.

The most important thing to ask yourself is: what is progressive to you? I
know I have some stuff in my prog section that a lot of people wouldn't
consider progressive at all. Basically, it's your shit, and as has been
well documented here in the past, EVERYONE has a different idea of the
specific meaning of the word "progressive" when applied as an adjective to
musical styles. If you think, say, Faith No More is prog...then by all
means shove it in your prog section and screw anyone who tells you
    otherwise.

My shit is seriously weird. None of my friends can make sense of my
organization system, but I think a lot of you would. I have older Metallica
(up until AJFA) in the progressive area, while the later stuff is simply
with my rock stuff. A lot of the old-school bands are broken up like this
in my collection. Genesis is another example...everything after the Duke
album is in plain 'ole rock. To further confuse the issue, Everything by
Yes up until Drama is in the prog section. Then 90125, Big Generator, and
Talk albums are in rock and then the rest are in prog again. Don't even get
me started on how I've broken up Rush. I probably just want attention.

Which leads me to the question: Do any of you other guys have some whacked
organization system? Anything akin to John Cusack's records in High
    Fidelity?

Yeah, I do. I sort my CD's alphabetically by artist/band name. Then, just
to show how wacky I am, I sort the albums, by artist, in chronological
order. Studio releases first, then singles, then live/bootleg albums.
    Crazy shit, eh? ;)

This paragraph is why I don't organize by genre. For me it's more important to keep the entire catalog of a band together, so I couldn't break up yes/rush, etc. between the "prog" and "non-prog" sections.

If I did do some organization, I'd probably do "obscure bands" and "popular bands" -- since just about all the obscure stuff I have is prog, that'd be a good enough breakout.

If I'm in the mood for Yes or Rush, then I know where to find those. When I say "I'm in the mood for some prog" then it's usually the lesser-known bands I'm after...

Actually, I used to do that once upon a time. :D I stopped in a fit of mild paranoia that I might accidentally mistake one for a dreamsicle and eat it. Since I re-organized, that fear has disappeared. Might be something to think about. -- KorgX3 thought he ate his "Lie" CD once, but fell asleep and dreamed that it was still there.

    LOL. Ytse-Spam strikes again.

Just a small hint to whomever didn't get the message from this email. When you receive an email that looks like spam, and it's addressed from ytsejam@torchsong.com, it's NOT spamming you. Responding to it is only going to make the hundreds of people on the jam angry at you :)

Of course, this is only the people who are on ack mode. Anybody reading jam digests will still have to wade through the spam in order to read the real messages on the list (as if there ARE any, LOL).
