Well isn't this a little bit embarassing.
Hi, my name is Ben Laussade. It's been a very long time since I've posted
anything to this lovely lil' mailing list.
I have a big big favor to ask. Perhaps anyone who was around back when I was
around would be able to help. I'm having a mid-life crisis, and I find myself
a little bit sad that I don't remember .001% of the super-witty, on topic,
generally brilliant things I posted to this list for the year and a half or
so I was on it. I looked around on the web and found archived jams, but the
archiving doesn't start till conveniently right after I unsubbed.
Soooooooooooo.....if anyone out there archived anything beFORE that, I'd be
willing to sell my soul, plus one body part (of your choice!) if you,
whomever (whoever?) you may be, would be so kind as to assist me in regaining
these lost treasures. I was on here between (approximiately) jams 970-2000. I
know that's a whole lot, but really any bit of it would be very cool. Thank
you in advance.
Just as a warning...if nobody gets back to me on this, I'll restart the
Visual Music thread.

Ok, you've brought me out of the woodwork... My initial experience was when I borrowed 'Awake' from a friend, coz I wanted to listen to some different stuff on the long drive from Adelaide to Melbourne... (after being a big Queensryche fan for several years)
Hadn't heard anything of them up to then and it all sounded pretty good playing reasonably quietly in the background, until about halfway through the album (mirror/lie) when all of a sudden I realised just how good it was, and pumped it up... by the time I finished space-dyed vest I was absolutely blown away.
So in answer to my favourite thing it would have to be the fact that they are so different to any other band I have ever heard. Love the vocals, the changing timings, the repeated ideas throughout, the absolute musical ability of each member... awesome.

Dear Friend,
Do you need a change in your life?
Do you remember when the entire world seemed like it was yours for the taking?
Do you remember a time when all of your hopes and dreams seemed like they were attainable?
First of all, let's be honest. You are not going to earn $50,000 USD$ in 20 days. It just isn't going to happen. Anyone who tells you that you can, is not being truthful. ************************************************************************************************ I would like to tell you about a plan though, that has changed my life. Take a calculator and figure in the worst possible scenario. Decide for yourself. If you decide that you want to take control of your life and move forward...that is your decision. ************************************************************************************************ Here's the step by step plan summary.
1)You order the 4 reports listed below ($5 USD$ each). They come to you by email. 2) Save a copy of this entire letter and put your name at report #1. Move all other names down. (You will be removing the person at the level 4) 3) Use any of the hundreds of bulk email services out there. 4) Orders will come right to your door. Simply email them the report they ordered. Isn't that about as easy as it gets??? ************************************************************************************************** Your cost to participate in this program is practically nothing (surely you can afford $20 USD$ and initial bulk mailing cost). You obviously already have a computer and an Internet connection and e-mail is FREE!
The primary method of building your downline is bulk email.
Let's say that you decide to start small, just to see how it goes. Let's assume that you and all those involved email out only 2,000 programs each. Let's also assume that the mailing receives a 0.5% response. The response could be much better. Also, many people will email out more than 2,000 programs. With a 0.5% response, that is only 10 orders for Report #1. Those 10 respond by sending out 2,000 programs each for a total of 20,000. Out of those 0.5%, 100 people respond and order 20,000. The 0.5% response rate to that is 1,000 orders for Report #3. Those 1,000 send out 2,000 each for a total of 2,000,000. The 0.5% response rate is 10,000 orders for report #4. That is 10,000 $5 USD$ bills for you. CASH!!! ******************************************************************************************************* Your total income in this example is: $50+ $500+ $5000+ $50,000 for a total of $55,550!!! USD$ *******************************************************************************************************
REMEMBER FRIEND. THIS IS ASSUMING 1,990 OUT OF THE 2,000 PEOPLE YOU MAIL TO WILL DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AND TRASH THIS PROGRAM!!! DARE TO THINK FOR A MOMENT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF EVERYONE, OR EVEN HALF MAILED OUT 100,000 INSTEAD OF 2,000. Believe, most people will do just that, and more!!!
Friend, you do the math. You look at the opportunity, if you decide that you would like to participate in this program, the decision is yours.
Recently, the Federal Trade Commission has tried to stop chain letters which promise you will make tons of money by participating. Such chain letters are NOT legal because of this reason. This new program complies with all the rules.
To be legal, a chain letter must offer a product and must not promise you will get rich by taking part. If you look at the program, do the math and decide that you will make money, it is your opinion. No such claim is here. However, I do strongly encourage you to do the calculations. Figure out the worst possible response and see how it calculates.
Your orders come right to your door and you send your reports via email. You are not involved in personal selling. You do it privately in your own home, store, or office. This is the EASIEST plan anywhere. It is simply order filling by email. Order the four reports shown on the list below. You can't sell them if you don't order them!!!.
For each report, send $5.00 CASH USD$, the NAME & NUMBER OF THE REPORT YOU ARE ORDERING, YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, and YOUR NAME AND RETURN ADDRESS (in case there's a problem). MAKE SURE YOUR RETURN ADDRESS IS ON THE ENVELOPE IN CASE OF ANY MAIL PROBLEMS!
Report #1 will tell you how to download bulk email software and email addresses so you can send it out to thousands while you sleep. Remember that 50,000+ new people are joining the internet every month.
By the way, there are over 50 million email addresses with millions more joining the internet each year, so we don't worry about "saturation". People are used to seeing and hearing the same advertisements every day on radio/TV. How often have you received the same pizza flyers on your door? Then, one day you are hungry for pizza and immediately recall the flyer. Same thing with this letter. I received this letter many times- then one day I decided it was time to try it.
This program will not require you to come into contact with people or take any telephone calls. Just follow the instructions.
There is no guarantee either stated or implied that anyone participating in this program will earn $50,000+.USD$ (You must include that statement to make this legal.)
* Always offer same day service! Email reports the day that you receive the order!! This will guarantee that the e-mail that THEY send out with YOUR name and address on it will be prompt because they can't advertise until they receive the report! ***************************************************************************************************** Get started TODAY!! Notes- ALWAYS SEND $5 USD$ CASH (US CURRENCY) FOR EACH REPORT. CHECKS NOT ACCEPTED. make sure the cash is concealed by wrapping it in two sheets of paper. On one of those sheets write: (a) the number and name of the report you are ordering, (b) your e-mail address, and (c) your name and postal address.

Both crap.

I would definately rather buy a nice used bass than new crap. Check out Yamaha RBX 260 or 460 or BBN4. Standard Fender P or J bass made in mexico should be quite nice too. There are even some fabulous Squiers out there, you just need to try alot of them to find a good one. Once you get on used instrument market, the sky is the limit. You can get some outragously cool deals. Be careful though and inspect instruments carefully. I'd stay away from ebay though.
Good luck and let us know what you got :)

Actually, what I want most is a good presentation of the video stuff shown on the monitors. I think it'd be neat if they could do branching to allow us to see all the video stuff at the times it is shown during the concert instead of shots of the band playing.

Hello everyone:
I need your help on something. I am trying to organize my CD collection (only about 250 strong right now...) by style, and I don't know what exactly to classify as Prog (my largest style, by the way, with about 60). Some people have told me that Prog is just mixing rock with classical elements, but that's the definition of Metal. Are Metallica and Megadeth, since they both use a lot of classically based stuff, therefore considered Progressive? I wouldn't think so. What exactly makes a band Progressive? It's more than odd time signatures, speed, and freaky keyboard sounds, otherwise a lot of Thrash and Electronic bands would be considered Prog. Scary. Any help is greatly appreciated. Just post it to the 'Jam if that's OK.
Just so I've got some DT content in here, my favorite DT trait is the emotion, especially once you know the songs. I've got "Trial of Tears" in right now, which is where my subject comes from. ToT is one of those songs that you don't really listen to, you feel it. Others include "Space-Dye Vest," "The Spirit Carries On," and "Eve," just to name a few.
In other Prog news, has anyone on this list ever heard of Steve Unruh? He used to be my band teacher in my little town of 1500 people. He is the one who got me started on Prog, the one who got me started playing guitar, and the one who helped me to realize the power of music. He released 2 awesome CDs before he left earlier this year, and I believe he made another one this summer. All of the guitars are acoustic, except the bass. He plays all of the instruments himself. Steve's second album, "The Beginning of a New Day," is one of my top 5 albums of all time. It has a lot of emotion and feeling. Best of all, it's got a 27-minute song right in the middle! If any of you get a chance, and you like the Yes-ish non-Metal Prog stuff, I would strongly recommend this album.
Speaking of Yes, I've been listening to a lot of Yes lately, especially the new stuff from the "Keys to Ascension" albums. I think Yes pretty much sums up what Progressive Rock is all about. Well, this letter wasn't going to be this long, but it is. Any help with the "What is Prog?" thing is appreciated a lot.
Now playing: Dream Theater - "Trial of Tears" (for the third time)

I'd say this: Unless you say to yourself "I'm in the mood to listen to some prog right now" then don't really bother organizing by genre. If you do get in the mood for prog, then build the section as the mood strikes you. Since it's your CD collection, your opinion on what is prog should count. If you don't hear a band as prog, then putting them in prog isn't going to help you find the music you want to listen to any easier.
Unless, of course, the object is to open a record store or impress visitors as to how much prog you have in your collection... Then you might have to take other opinions into account.
