What emotion? Listening to Charlie botch "I laugh at what I've done"
is taking the lowest moment of the tune, but I don't hear him adding
highlights. James goes wild on this piece - too wild, yes, but
he doesn't sound wooden.
And if you listen through the horrible production, Charlie is screaming
at the end too ;)
Mr. Portnoy has said that Charlie did a good Beatles sing, and you
can hear this on Golden Slumbers. But the only spot I prefer him
over LaBrie is on OAMOT, and Charlie probably had far more prep
time to handle "A father's Benediction" than James was given

Coming out of lurking mode now that I have the Jam on the right mail ;-P

I saw a while back someone asking what we all (lurkers & all) like in DT...
Here's my contribution :
A really cool guitarist I played with when I was younger took me home in his car every time we finished playing together.
An I&W tape was on and endless loop in that car and after hundreds of thousands of times listening to that (eventually) worn down
tape,
I found (as we all have) that :
* Nothing is richer then that music.
* I realised that there was no flaw in the music (melody, technical, transitions, timing, freshness, ect, ect, ect).
* That all were "out of this world" musicians.
* ect... ect...
But I said to myself "a lot of groups bring out masterpieces and then go downhill" ...
... until "Awake" came, and they have surprised me zillions of times since.
By the way I still listen to I&W much too much for my health,
do you now a lot of groups "who can do that to you" with all their studio albums ?
I know of only one : DT
I'll stop now or end up with a 7 mile long mail ;-)
I just hope DT will musically rock me for the next centry (at least).

Posting a list of candidates would definitely fail the "no top 10 lists"
requirement. :) Just figure out which of the new discs you bought this year

I tried listening to their MP3 samples at the web page listed above but on both machines that I tried it on the sound was just garbled. I tried playing them with Winamp, Real-audio player and the MS Media Player but they all had the same problem. What player did you use to listen to those MP3s? And did you have to download any special codecs or anything? Thanks.

Um, I thought that we were trying to make the thing bigger, not scare it into hiding! What the rubber band and dental floss are for, I know not, but it might be worth looking into.-) The needle and knife, however, are not the usual operating tools used during an addadictomy. Unless, you use the rubber band to stop blood flow, cut it open with the knife, put the knife in it (making it, well, longer, although slightly misshapen), sew it up with the needle and floss, and then take off the rubber band. That could hurt, however, and there is no general anesthetic included in the kit. Imagine your girlfriend coming into your living room, and there you are, passed out on the floor, with a butterknife halfway inserted into your penis. When she finally got you to the ER, the doctors would just laugh at you. You would die of blood loss, and be made fun of forever, because no one would know what you were doing. I'm thoroughly scared now. I keep forgetting I started this project about a week or two back, the Anada Music Project. You can read the page about it at http://anada.net/music.html but it's basically a huge banal collaboration of all sorts of noise and beautiful stuff combined into a cacophanous blast of evil that probably shouldn't be allowed to be available to the public.

Oh, THAT kind of sample.
Just about any recent general keyboard or sound module should have both (by general I mean not something that only does hip-hop drums or Hammond organs or such)
You can also make a wind sound by applying filters to white noise. I'm assuming you've got some kind of sound editing software, yes? Play with it enough and you can probably get something.
Or, you can try http://www.synthzone.com/sampling.htm -- bunch of links to some free sample libraries. I've never searched through it, but it may have something.
