I just luckily avoided a speeding ticket earlier this week...
Was traveling on a divided highway about 75 in a 65 and I notice this Camaro
unmarked car sitting on the side of the road. Luckily for me, he was on the
opposite shoulder of the freeway. As I passed him we locked eyes as he was
checking out my car for characteristics he could remember when he finally
catches up with me (he hopes) in 4 or 5 minutes down the road :) He flips
on his lights and then has to wait for an opening in the traffic to go
across the freeway and turn around to head my direction. I take the first
exit and turn into a neighborhood and start going down various paths
watching my rear view mirror all the time. Never saw him so I headed back
to the freeway and got back on and went on about my business :) That was
an interesting 15 minute adventure... Yeah, when I have Dream Theater or
Symphony X or NIGHTWISH playing in the car, I loose track of how fast I
    drive :)

So dig it: The cool part of the met1 solo was on, right as I came off
the entrance ramp to the Palisades Parkway. You just can't not go fast
for that part, so I stabbed third and went. wheee! Right by a state
trooper. Everything happened in slow motion then, like the scene in the
beginning of The Doors where young jim is watching as his car drives by
the indians. It was also a little bit like when that couple drive by the
murder scene in Fargo. I was busted and I knew it. but my exit was
just ahead! And right off my exit was a real quick turn-off and I coulda
lost the cop and still technically have been going home except that some
MOOOOOOORRRRONNNNNNN was taking the exit ramp at the breakneck speed of
a bigwheel. The cop had plenty of time to u-turn, merge, speed up,
pass the cars between us, and so by the time I got off the exit ramp and
onto that quick turn, he was close enough to have seen me make the
turn. He wasn't even behind me, even then. that's how easy it would
have been and I wouldn't have had to speed(well....continue speeding...)
    to pull it off.

So of course like all NY troopers he was a hard-ass and I had to prove
that I lived in that area so he wouldn't give me an evasion ticket or
whatever it would be, in addition to the speeding in a workzone that no
    work was being done in.

What's real embarrassing though is when you're going down the road
listening to Under a Glass Moon using your accellerator and brake as
double bass pedals. *lurch, thump, lurch, thump, lurch, thump* all the

    Hey jammerz,

Well, I'm happy to report, Megadeth absolutely kicked ASS last night at Phoenix's Blockbuster Desert Sky Pavilion. Anthrax opened, and played a solid 45 minute set - they were very tight. After taking 45 minutes to change sets, etc., Megadeth came on and opened up with "Holy Wars" (which really rocked). They played nearly all older stuff, including "Hangar 18", "In My Darkest Hour", etc., and surprisingly enough, NOTHING from "Risk". They were VERY tight, and Al Pitrelli fits the band like a glove. The dude is amazing - he plays blindingly fast, with great tone, without even looking at his guitar... :)

Megadeth played a new tune (which someone I work with told me was a sequel to "Hangar 18") which really kicked - more modern, yet very reminiscent of the RIP album. I think we have our good old Megadeth back in top form - good riddance, Marty! :)

I've seen Megadeth 4 times (1994, 1995, 1999, 2000), and I've never seen them better! I can't wait for the new album, which supposedly is done recording! :)

Every once in awhile that song will break into my head. It's like the Big Red or Menthos song. In order to rid yourself of it you either have to listen to it or go sing it to someone else, transferring the curse. Not that the MacG song is bad, I learned to play it once upon a time. :) It's just catchy as hell. Murdoc ruled, too. hehehe.

Should the Transformers and the Rangers ever fight it out, only one conclusion is possible-- the Thundercats show up and kick everyone's ass. Mm, the Thundercats. Now that's a concept I can't get enough of; a bunch of bi-ped ninja cats who are half naked that carry a lot cool weapons and have glowing eyes and shit. Great TV show. I don't know how many Thundercats action figures I had when I was a small kid...

I am not familiar with that show "Boy Meets World", but that is William Daniels. He voiced KITT and was Dr. Mark Craig on "St. Elsewhere".

Does anyone remember when he was a guest voice on "The Simpsons"? He voiced KITT on a "Knight Rider" video for Homer? He was on twice.... he also was the voice of "Night Boat" (or was it Knight Boat?).

What!??! Street Hawk was a far superior show. Everybody knows that. Knight Rider was the best overall (until that dreadful fourth season) during the 80's IMHO, but Street Hawk was a close second.

I bought that album a while back now, I really don't remember why or how did I hear about them, but I enjoy it very much too. While I wouldn't say it being all DT heads' cup of whatever-you-prefer, it's very good moody prog metal, like Jared said, not much shredding, but I know there's someone else out there too who doesn't need that in good music =)

Keys are very essential for DR, and thank god i don't hear matheos in songwriting, it's very well thought out and carefully composed. Definitely worth checking out. Definitely.

    Hail!

The problem of getting past mental blockades is one that I share as well. Countless times I've set my guitar down after an uninspired 15 minute practice session and said "..maybe I just don't have it in me, perhaps I should just give up..". Then I'll listen to Vai or Petrucci and get inspired all over again and fail to reach my "goal".

This is a problem I still struggle with, not so much on the technical side of playing, that is just a matter of time, but with phrasing in particular and just with song writing. From a progressive perspective, I end up constructing "parts" (see Erotomania), but never a full song. I myself cannot offer any advice on how to get past this... but Shreddi Master Vai can, and does, in a series of mental lessons found at his Fire Garden Website! Coming from a guy who starved himself for three days to get the proper mindset in order to record "For the Love of God", I'd say he's a grand authority on the matter. Check it out!

Feedback is relatively easy to control melodically, but it requires some things...

1). You have to know your guitar and how it resonates... know the thing inside out. 2). The same goes for your amp, and getting a wide range of feedback tones requires a less scooped sound (i.e. hard to get the sound when you're trying to be Dime Bag, or when you have a noise gate on) reasonably high gain, and reasonable volume to really milk it. 3). You need space. It's all in having space. :)

Ideally, you want as much of a semicircle as possible in front of your amp. The further away from your amp you can get, the better/wider the possibilities.

What you do, is stand up, with your guitar volume and tone all the way maxed, and stand about 3 feet from your amp (start directly in front of it. You will eventually want to try standing off to the sides and what not as well). Don't mute any strings. When you hear feedback, try playing a note related to the note you hear in the feedback... play an octave, or a unison or a major 3rd. It seems to be easier on the unwound middle strings (G amd B). Now, if this note doesn't feed back, take a step back. Even if it does, step back. With each step or two, depending on where you are, and what gear you're using, you can get a new note of feedback.

Steve Morse typically shows this at his guitar clinics. He usually uses his lead (bridge) pickup, nickel strings, and an amp with the presence and treble turned WAY down and the mids way up. He gt up to about 20 feet away from his amp at the furthest, so this can require some space to milk it.

If this doesn't work for you, try striking all of the open strings at once, and when that feeds back, start moving backwards, or to the sides. Try turning the volume up. Turn off compressors, noise gates, and effects in general. When you get it to work with fretted notes, experiment with vibrato.

Hell yes, Damon! The Hulk was my all time fave TV show growing up! Every once in a blue moon, I still catch the occasional rerun on the SciFi Channel. Awesome. :-) I used to love the piano they always played at the end when David would be walking down a highway or something. That show was the highlight of my week growing up. We always made "Hulk-Night" a family event, and we'd place bets on the exact time down to the minute when Bixby's eyes would turn green in each half hour of the show. And it was always on the same night at the Dukes, which made it twice as cool. :-) I can remember welling up and choking back tears at the end of the TV movie they had out a few years ago called "The Death Of the Incredible Hulk". It was like a part of my childhood died with it. :-P

Hey JAMmers, I was going to do a top 10 list of 80's shows but decided there were too many. So here is a "genre" list Top 5 Cartoon/T.V.Movie Super Heroes 1-- Spider-man 2-- The Hulk 3-- Captain America (you have no life if you saw the whole series of movies, and you should probably never admit it if you remember the older 70's cartoon) 4-- Transformers--G.I.Joe tie 5-- The Blue Falcon (no movie that I know of but the falcon reminds me of space ghost and dynomutt is like the bionic scooby doo) Top 5 Car Shows 1-- Knight Rider (of course) 2-- The Dukes of Hazard 3--Hardcastle and McCormick 4--Stingray 5--Miami Vice (also best fashion award nominee)

    Top 5 Fashion/Fads 1-- Day Glow or Pastel Colors 2--Members Only Jackets 3-- The "Crockett/Tubbs" look 4--Fat Laces -- Rubik's Cube tie 5--Breakdancing

Top 5 re-makes 1--The Twilight Zone (theme played by The Grateful Dead) 2--Alfred Hitchcock Presents 3--The Outer Limits 4--Tabitha (Bewitched spin-off) 5--Star Trek (movie series)

Okay there was more, but I can tell your getting sick already so I'll just stop here. Memory Lane ... Gotta Love It. " I Feel Good" James Brown np Flashdance Soundtrack(just kidding actually i'm listening to Afro-Celt Sound System )

I've found the best way to get a controllable feedback is to play loud, and close to the amp. Really high output pick-ups work easier, (Humbuckers, I have Dimarzio Evolutions in my JEM, and they must be the most agressive pick-ups ever....). The higher the output you have, the easier it is to get the feedback. Once you have it, you have to control it though. Generally when going for feedback, I use a swell with my volume pedal and as the volume increases, the note feeds-back more, and I'll either bend the note with my whammy or my fingers. Legato runs are easy to get feedback as well, a lot of hammer-on's and pull-off's, and then holding one note until it starts feeding back.

A lot of gain on the amp helps as well. For some reason I've found that amp distortion works better for feedback than distortion pedals do. (All depends on the amp/pedal, and volume really, just listen to some live Satch, notably "Flying In A Blue Dream", only thing Joe uses for distortion is a Japanese Boss DS-1, and has ZERO probs getting a great sounding feedback.)

Depending on the tone of the feedback you want, you can get a warmer tone from the neck pick-up rather than the bridge. On my JEM, my neck pick-up has a slightly higher output than my bridge pick-up, and I tend to use that more for controllable feedback, as it's a lot smoother sounding and easier to achieve than the bridge.

If you REALLY want to control feedback, literally at the tip of your fingers, look into the Fernandes Sustainer pick-up line. Basically you install the Sustainer pick-up, along with a seperate volume/tone knob for it, and the more you turn it up, the more it sustains, causing near immediate feedback. You can hit a note and in less than a second have it screaming 2 octaves above the pitch, (WIHOUT a whammy pedal!!), because it's feeding back. My only complaint about the Sustainer is that it sounds a little compressed, (the way it works is really by compressing the signal and squeezing it out.....). and it takes some body routing to be installed.

Someone who uses feedback a lot and can control it well would be The Edge from U2. Check out "With Or Without You" from The Joshua Tree, great song and he does some great feedback work on there. My school had a POPS Concert this year, and I played the entire guitar piece using all feedback, (Again, volume pedal down, hitting the note, and raising the volume and getting an eventual feedback, with the neck pick-up).

    Have fun, Andy

I remember V quite well. My friend and I were quite infatuated with that series as well as the movie "Goonies" which arrived in theaters about that time. hehehe. Of course, my family pasttime was my mom cooking homemade pizza every and milkshakes every Friday night so we could sit back and watch the Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

My all-time favorite 80's show was probably Perfect Strangers, though. God Bless Balki. God Bless him straight to Hell.

Man, I would've put the A-Team in there somewhere. That show was all about BA and his mean ride, foo'!

Don't forget Snoopy. Jeez, I'll never forget the huge Snoopy craze that went around in the early 80's. It even drove my sister to get a tattoo. I hope it makes her itch. -- KorgX3 straps on his complicated double-laced LA Gears.
