wrong-o, gong-o!
it's all levels. napster allows the trading of music on a much greater
level, and that's where the problems begin. the trading of music isn't a
problem when it's just you and me. But napster is specifically designed
solely to allow zillions of mp3's to be traded back and forth. Clearly,
nobody really cared about a little tape trading and even as mp3's became
popular, nothing has caused the stir that napster has - because napster
is on a whole different level.
your argument might sit nicely with my mom, who thinks a thief is a
thief. But yer both wrong. You can't say that to trade a tape with a
friend is nearly as bad as dowloading a gigabyte of u2 songs(i'm gettin'
there!).
Obviously, it's worse to take some things than others. "Wrong is wrong"
is, well....wrong.

Hah, I'd be willing to bet that a whole 2 tons of people DO know about
LTE.
So, let ME tell YOU how they can only sell 3,500 copies of LTE. It's
because of the most evil program on the planet...Napster! Can't you see
the evidence staring you right in the face?? Because of Napster, the
members of DT (except for Myung and Labrie of course) have lost 96,500
album sales!
That's right,
100,000 - 3,500 = 96,500
I say we get one of our famous ytsejam petitions together to demand
these people buy the LTE albums!

Hi I need a little help.
A friend of mine at his job place is trying to make MPEG videos of some
stuff we have, one of them being the Steve Vai concert in Sofia this
year! :)) Yummi
He has video card - MATROX RT 2000.
Now, he had some problems. How do we reduce the window size of the video
so that the final mpeg is not bigger than 650-700 MB, in order to put it
on 1 CD?
He told me on screen resolution 700xsomething a 2 minutes video is 600MB
huge. :( He's working in ADOBE PREMIERE for making the MPEG video. Any
better program for that? Or how do we make the video with smaller window
size?
Thanx.

Admit it Dan, you just want to look at their web page so you can gawk at the

Yes, they have a webpage. No, I don't remember it. No, I don't think they
take themselves seriously :) Lot of help I am, eh?

I've dabbled with this a little. Everything I know I learned from the web
site www.arstechnica.com. Check out their forums. There is one called
Audio-video, that's the one you're looking for. Before you post your
question, search that forum for "virtual dub" or "Vdub". This process has
been explained about a thousand times there.
good luck,

Thats just silly. Ive been caught speeding, so i have no argument
against road laws? I use napster all the time and don't pay for
any of the stuff i get, but i don't kid myself that what im doing
isnt exactly legal and im not going to jump up and down screaming
injustice if they close it down or anything. I morally justify my own
actions because i fit in the catagory of people who wouldnt buy
the stuff anyway and because i do my best to support musicians and
artists whenever i get the opportunity, but, hypothetically, if someone gave me a
petition, or whatever, to close napster i would be happy to sign it.
Besides I think we already established that there is a significant difference
between dubbing tapes for a friend and the large scale distribution of
high quality copies that napster is doing. Companies consider the factor
that some people are going just listen to tapes of CDs, so we end up paying
a little extra (ever wonder how much computer software would cost if there
was no such thing as piracy?) Most companies have not until now had to
factor in the cost of potentionally hundreds of thousands of people stealing
their product.

I think part of thing with Dream Theater is they have a monopoly on
the prog metal market. If someone hears about prog metal, the first CD
they're going go out and buy is Dream Theater. After that they'll
probably buy a few more DT CDs and then maybe look into Fates
Warning and Symphony X or whatever. No ones going to go out
and stuff that's as weird as LTE unless they have a few DT CDs already.
Kind of the same reason why BB King and Eric Clapton can sell millions
of blues CDs whilst most blues musicians are sweeping floors.
> NO. I don't use it at all, not because of hard disk/bandwidth limitations. Mainly because I prefer listening to samples, then buying the album(s) if I like what I hear, and actually going to live shows. Don't forget, there's radio. Some of you might say, "What...radio?!?!?" Lucky for me, I live in an area that has a good selection of radio stations... K-Rock, WSOU, WFUV, WNYC, WBGO, WDHA, etc... (NYC/NJ).
I know a lot of you complain that there is no good radio out there, so I thought I
would plug our local radio station which a lot of overseas listeners tune into on
the net (if you haven't done this before, you should try- its not that scary as it
sounds). Go to http://www.pbsfm.org.au/
They have a prog metal show from 12:00midnight to 2:00 Australian time (I think
we're about 16 hours ahead of america) on Wednesday. Last week they had an interview with
Symphony X's singer and they play heaps and heaps of prog/power/symphonic/
neoclassical stuff. Lots of new releases. And of course lots of Dream Theater.
PBS also has a jazz fusion show on Saturday, and lots of funky jazz shows throughout
the week if you're into that sort of music. They also have metal shows all Wednesday evening.
BTW. On a completely unrelated note, here's your useless fact for the day-
Having been reminded of Douglas Adams' work through the recent threads on the jam,
I was searching around on the internet. Apparantly he's really good friends with Dave
Gilmour (of Pink Floyd- like you wouldnt know) and was responsible for naming their
Division Bell album.

anybody gotten ahold of this version?
I'll be buying my version off the net as soon as I can be assured that
I'll be getting the version with the video. If you got the video on
your CD, can you let us know where you got it? Thank you!

Rumor has it, they got into trouble allowing underaged people in, and lost
their liquor license. Not sure if this is true though.

I do believe that your final quote has contradicted your entire post!!! Violation of copyright is the same on any scale!!! Napster does have some potentially GOOD uses but until there is remuneration to the parties that hold copyright, it is STILL a vehicle for misuse! Copying from cd's for your buddy IS just as "wrong" (as you put it) to someone using Napster.
But... as the saying goes, Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!! I'm pretty sure that we have all violated copyright at some point in our lives! Whether it's copying videos, cd's, taping from tv, or any form of copyrighted material, we've all probably been guilty at some time.

Ummm, why do I have problems with this statement?
So like, if we're being 100% honest, you shouldn't be owning any DT boots, since anyway not all of the DT gang approve it.
And what's that anyway, - if the band says OK, then I copy the boots (that anyway won't ever get released and will continue to be exchanged strictly within the fan community); - and if they say NO, OK, I won't ever copy any of that stuff.
Why I find this VERY hard to believe? So like, you bump across some amazing John Petrucci boot material piece which inspires you for the rest of your guitarist life, and then you hear John says a No-NO for boots so you will go and delete it? Ugghghh .... yeah right.
And what, are you going around asking the bands if they approve boots whenever you come across some boot materials?
