Yep. I never said I didn't like 70s prog, I just don't like it when *NEW* bands try ti imitate the sound without moving beyond what they did. SX and SG have a strong Kansas influence, but they are not simply recycling the old stuff. They take from it and modernize it.
I don't recall satying I thought they were more progressive than older Genesis. I don't think they are, really.

I think the point is that some of the "traditional" progressive flag is dated *IF* it is note done in a modern style. DT, SX, Shadow Gallery, etc, grow and learn from the old prog, but they themselves do not sound old. Not necessarily that they sound heavy, but that they sound new and original.
Of the other bands you mentioned, I have only heard Spock's Beard, and was not all that impressed. They were funny on stage, but the music didn't seem new and inspired.
What I was getting at with the old prog bit is that Transatlantic *to me* sounded like early 70s Yes or something. While that was good at the time, I wouldn't consider it good now. Maybe I am a sucker for the heavier side, but SX and DT do some quite soft stuff that does not sound like a cheesy copy of the early 70s.
I guess I'll just have to hear Leonardo before I can make an opinion. :)

Yeah, but the thing is ... the 2 thrones ... they are RIGHT NEXT to each other. As a drummer, I do not see the point in that. I could see it if they were spaced a bit to open up more playing options. But as close as they are ... I would think he could still reach everything just fine with 1 throne.
The rest of the set looks cool tho IMO. :)

Touching base on a few things here. Nothing etched in stone, humidity induced, or corporately-sponsored but here goes:
1) I thought the PROMISED LAND was QR's last great CD. Definitely dark, but still inspired, but it was the beginning of Geoff Tate's vocal inflection mutation, and this coming from a QR connoisseur. Operation: MIndcrime, The Warning and Rage for Order are CD's that were precognitive in their futuristic neo-progressive approach, well-crafted and intelligently composed. I don't know what happened after that... but those 3 CD's still stand as testaments to their potential for greatness once again. Musically lethargic? Lackadaisical? Too much Seattle rainfall? 2) For the JAM getting' slow, I don't know, man, as in a previous email I represented the fact that I only 'returned' to the fold recently after a year long hiatus but... well, perhaps the summer is keeping people preoccupied with reality? 3) (Obligatory DT reference) Personally, I don't think I will be purchasing the new 3-CD DT Live CD. It's just overkill in my humble opinion. Plus, I am not to keen on live CD's to begin with. I will wait it out by listening to FII (w/Sherinian) instead, highly underrated in my estimation (atleast from what I have previously read on the 'Old' jam)... or IAW. I liked the last CD alot, but something about it just struck me as too melodramatic for my tastes. 4) How long until chocolate is deemed a controlled substance and banned by our lovely reactionary White house personnel? After all, I certainly wouldn't put it past Bush's cronies to convince him of the correlation between chocolate and marijuana, and if Ashcroft in all his sentimental sanctimonious conservative vision gets a hold of the papers on that one, well.. I for one think Gail Norton needs to imbue about a ton of the stuff (your guess as to which I am referring to here).
5) Ambassador Nelson (which nation?) thanks for your response regarding my personal comments. It's difficult as a self-financed, independent musician to get publicity, but one must throw out their inhibitions somewhat to move the steel wheels of the PR machine. But, yes, for years I was under the impression trance and progressive music (rock, metal, whichever) would converge nicely. I would appreciate opinions on the sound clips. I know... the Rush sounding comments are at my doorstep! Unintentional! Anyhow, the links for those not convinced yet (and I will just add that no animals were hurt in the construction of said CD).

I would think he could still reach everything just fine with 1 throne. > > The rest of the set looks cool tho IMO. :) > my only contention with this, and i really hope mike proves me wrong here, is the fact that no matter which throne he's sitting on at the time, he's automatically limited his playable surfaces to about 1/4 - 1/3 of what were at his immediate playing range on the previous kit. granted, the transatlantic & LTE kits were both trimmed down drastically from the DT kit, but it surprises me that he would choose to do that in the realm of DT's music as well. granted, they're saying that they have this whole new sound for this album, so im' deffinetly not counting anything out until i hear it, or see it for that matter. as a drummer though, it kinda' surprised me that he would so intentionally limit his surfaces like that, considering what he's had available to him on prior kits. just have to wait & see (hear) what it turns out like.

I see this as being no worse than Neil Peart's setup with the electronic kit and the acoustic kit for certain songs.
I also challenge any drummer to not say there was a period in their life where they wanted to just surround themselves in drums. I know I did for a while.

Or just not that good. I'm a huge Pink Ployd fan, and I loved the early QR, but Empire and on started to decline, IMHO. I would equate Promised Land with DT's FII. A couple of really good songs, the rest so-so, and the lyrics particularly failing (IMHO).
I really liked the songs Promised Land, Disconnected, One More Time, Damaged and Someone Else. So I wouldn't completely pan it. But it's not like everything up to and including O:M, where I loved every single note played.
I just can't get into (no, they actually turn me off) lyrics like those on Out of Mind, Bridge, and Lady Jane(all the DeGarmo lyrics of that period). Oh well, everyone has their own tastes.
If you want something that mixes older QR and Pink Floyd, I would say that Pain of Salvation/The Perfect Element would be a better example. Although there's a lot more than just old QR/PF there. (ok, that's my daily plug of PoS).
As for Pink Floyd, I just can't get enough. I picked up the Pulse video recently, and I could listen to Gilmour solo all day. Does anyone know if there's a plan for Pulse to be released on DVD?

OK, here's a thing I heard tonight. I had dinner with a friend who had dated several musicians (keyboardists) and she said they both refused to wash their hands for at least two to three hours after a gig. Their explaination being that the water was not good for the joints.
Now I've been playing instruments (guitar, violin, drums) for the past twenty years and have never come across this before. Has anyone else? What's the score if this is for real?
Just got Ark - Burn the Sun - took quite a few listens to get into it, but now I'm completely hooked. If you haven't got it yet, get it NOW!

If you like 'Burn The Sun', then I suggest you check out their self titled debut, which IMO is way better. Though lacking the production of the second album, it's way more off the wall, progressive, jazzy and less predictable than "BtS'

can i take the first sentence and "quoute" it around? hehehehe i don't even like the damn thing to ring! i have it in vibrator mode. so, everytime it rings, I jump like a scared cat! (and let it ring a little longer if it is in certain body region....jus' kiddin'!)
