I got the new Yes CD "Magnification" a couple days ago. I have to
say that the guys in Yes still have it. This CD has a fresh sound while
still being a Yes disc. There are no keyboards on this CD other than some
piano played by Alan White. Instead they use an orchestra.
When I heard that this CD would feature an orchestra I had
my doubts. Most of the previous efforts of "Band plays with London
Philharmonic" where they rehash old tunes using a symphony have been
pretty lame (including Yes'). Usually those attempts would try to use
the orchestra to replace a single player (such as the keyboard player),
playing simple melodic lines and minor background filler. This CD avoids
the problems found on those other discs by using the orchestra as an
actual orchestra. The symphonic instruments are (often) used as part
of the melodies in addition to providing great harmonies and extra layers.
It's a very cool sound.
The classical instruments meld surprisingly well with the bass
of Chris Squire and guitar of Steve Howe. Jon Anderson is also up to
form. Some of the more laid back songs have not caught my interest much
yet. But, a couple songs such as "Spirit of Survival" and "Dreamtime"
are fantastic, with powerful instrumental sections, great melodies and
harmonies. I'm not sure how they'll do that live.
This is the first CD in a while that has exceeded my expectations.
If you like Yes, give it a shot.
Steve
