It's an unfortunate fact of life in the UK, but
bands such as DT and Marillion ( in fact the
whole ProgRock genre ) are given
very little media attention.
]From the look of the current US music scene
there appears to be a much greater diversity
of musical styles, and - I never thought I'd
ever say this - most of the really innovative
acts are from the other side of the pond.
stay happy

This is Mark Wood you're referring to, and yes, he kicks major bootie on
electric violin. He has a couple albums out, and I was particularly
impressed with "Against the Grain", although I'm not sure everyone on the
'jam would like the vocals (which are in the vein of Rage Against the Machine).
If you can't find his albums elsewhere, they're available from his web site:
Enjoy,

If I'm not mistaken and it's the guy I'm thinking of, I think he recently
toured with the East Coast TSO touring company. If that's him... yes, he did
play a mean violin in concert. :-)

Yeah, he toured with Trans-Siberian Orchestra last month. The concept of an
"electric violin" is probably exactly what TSO was looking for. (And
especially one with "80s metal hair"!) Is Mark Wood like a "big name" in
the electric violin community? *Is* there an "electric violin community"?
:)
And by the way, Kansas has had a violinist for many years. Is his an
electric violin or just a regular one with a mic? And what exactly is the
difference between those two anyway?

Yes and no. I think it's more of a fan-mail addy for Mike now than
anything. I think he uses a different email address now to handle all of
his more personal matters. I think I remember Dave Hatlee (MP.com
webmeister) saying that if you send email to the AOL address, don't expect a
reply because of how much email Mike gets on a daily basis.
I'd kind of wager, if anything, that Mike probably skims it more than
anything. Between all of the "I love you, Mike!" "Hey, Mike, listen to my
band!" "Save $$$ on Viagra!" and everything else, I would skim, too.

He is called Mark Wood (www.woodviolins.com/).
He was at the NAMM Show last week and played a jam with Jordan Rudess at the Kurzweil booth (and is on Jordan's new solo CD). Pix will be available soon at www.thruhereyes.com/
I have his Voodoo Violince CD (Guitar Recordings, Cherry Lane) from 1991 which is pretty amazing.
Speaking of Celine Dion, Mr Wood has toured with her band ...
