Hey Al, I want to talk to you Al. You're the man!

Are you going to Prog Power in Atlanta? I remember you telling me what a great time the Chicago show was. I'm seriously thinking about going down there this year. If nothing else than to see Symphony X.

Speaking of Symphony X, remember at the Savatage show in St. Paul when you chastised me for not having V? Well, now you can chastise me for having V and forgetting about it. I bought it the day it came out and threw it in the CD changer in my Jeep and forgot about. On our way home form St. Paul, Jill was cycling through the disks and I heard the familiar opening sounds of V. Boy was my face red.

Speaking of my face, I was in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago and a woman I met there told me that I looked like Geoff Tate. I hadn't heard that since the DT show in Chicago all those years ago. I don't know where you people get the idea that I look like Geoff Tate. It must be that stuff that Hugo was smoking.

Speaking of Hugo, ahh, I got nothing to go with Hugo.

Just doing my part to liven up the Jam, tk

I do! Now that you mention it, I've been trying to remember what those headphones you recommended to me were... There were two models, AKG, and they were both around $100. But for the life of me I can't find the email that you sent me... :(

What do you think of Grado headphones? Somebody recommended them to the MP.com Forum, and I read up on them, and they looked interesting, also around $100...

This was written by Dave Hatlee of the MikePortnoy.com Forum, and I think it really describes what needs to be done to prevent getting viruses in email. If you were to follow these directions, you would almost never have to worry about getting a virus.

Give them a read, or post them by your computer, so you don't forget them.

    -Andrew

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I know this type of thing has been posted here by myself and several others before, but it's important that people really read it and really take it seriously. Apparently not everyone does, because even some "old timers" have been infected recently.

There is a virus running rampant right now, and I have received infected email attachments from many many people in the past 2 weeks:

    http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html

10 STEPS TO SECURING YOUR COMPUTER FROM VIRUSES If you haven't taken these steps, or do not follow these steps yet, do yourself and all of your friends a favor and start:

    1. NEVER open email attachments if you do not know what they are, no matter who the email is from or what it says, if you have not scanned the attachment for viruses first.

    2. Install a well-known virus scan program on your system, I HIGHLY recommend Norton Anti Virus 2001 from http://www.symantec.com/ . This software detects and kills any virus that comes in through email or downloads BEFORE I open it. It was well worth the $39.

    3. If you have you're email set to automatically open attachments, change it immediately! Email viruses are activated by opening the attached file. If you don't have a clue as to what I am talking about, just follow step 2 and you'll be safe from now on.

    4. Viruses are even more propagated by mailing lists or emails that contain multiple recipients in the header. You can cut down on spam and risks, and keep your friends off of stupid email lists by using the BCC feature of your email software. (Blind Carbon Copy). By using this feature, you can send an email to as many people you want all at once, WITHOUT disclosing their email address to all the other recipients. I dunno about you, but nothing bothers me more than having my email address passed around on a list of 50 other people who can just hit "reply all" and compromise my privacy and security.

    5. Always remember, if you get an email from someone you don't know, there is a 99.9999% chance that it is utter bullshit. Lies. Most of us get them all day, but some people believe them. No, you didn't just win a vacation in the Bahamas, and I'm sorry but you haven't been chosen to hide a million dollars in the bank for some wealthy oil tycoon in Europe. You've simply been stuck on a spam list in which people collect and sell email addresses. When you respond or try to use their "remove" feature, that only confirms to them that your email address has a living person behind it and is worth selling for more money now.

    6. Always make sure your virus scan software is current/up to date. Nortons 2001 has a "Live Update" feature and each day it takes about 15 seconds for me to make sure I am protected against any new virus discovered.

    7. Don't open email attachments that you have not scanned for viruses.

    8. If you don't follow step 7, you eventually will get a virus.

    9. In case of step 8, follow step 2.

    10. If you are a cable/DSL/LAN user, get a security measure into place like Zone Alarm software, or even better, a LinkSys Cable/DSL Router.

I'm not preaching at everyone, I just cannot emphasize enough how important it is to wise-up and secure your system nowadays. I personally know of 24 people infected in the past 2 weeks, and most of them cannot afford the downtime and the problems that this type of thing causes. For a few dollars and a few minutes of your time you can save yourself (and your friends / co-workers) a lifetime of headaches!

That reminds me, what is the defect on the non-defective-free Symphony X CD? As stated in my previous "Stagnant Jam" post, I just found my in my disk changer. As I have started making copies of anything I leave in my jeep, I tried to make a copy of V. No dice. Everything works fine except Track 13. No matter which CD-ROM drive I try, I can't copy it. It seems to play fine.

Is that the defect? If so, could someone point me to a "Track 13.wav" so that I can make a good copy of my CD?

    Thanks, tk

I went to see G3 at Warner Theater in DC with my friend Josh, drummer from my band. The show was very much unbelievable. I sat the whole time with my mouth open, unable to breathe, pointing at the stage from time to time. Both Josh and I have come to pretty much the same conclusions.

    1. Best ~$50 either of us has ever spent or will ever spend, easily worth much more (fuck all y'all who complain about high ticket prices); 2. (my conclusion) Better than any and all drugs in the world, and there aren't many i haven't tried; 3. (Josh's conclusion) Better than all the sex in the world, and this guy knows; 4. It's ok to show off unhuman musicianship from time to time.

Also several comments regarding the show and stuff i've read. Steve Vai missed his whammy bar and stopped playing for almost a second. I fell out of my chair (no exxageration). Artists shouldn't have to sign autographs; after a blistering set like G3, one has the right to be tired and retreat to his hotel room. Satriani did a little segment during his guitar solo where he had the audience sing melodic lines that he was playing; although his comment afterwards was "it's not a real rock show 'till the audience sings," my interpretation is that it was his way of saying "i'm better at this than you are at anything you do." Vinnie Moore was the guest star, and I was very surprised when he demonstrated a playing style vastly different from the other three (or five, if you count Stu and Billy). He played bluesy licks, with few precise notes instead of a million of them composed by interpolation. But, as happy as I was to finally see him in concert, deep inside I was kinda hoping that Paul Gilbert would be the guest guitarist of the night... we can all dream can't we?

Anyway, hope everyone who went to the show had as much fun as I did. It was an experience I would not trade for anything else in the world.

That was the problem indeed. Track 13 had skipping problems in most CD players...or CD-ROM players, etc. The back of my defective cd seemed to have this "blob" painted. But then, my "7th song" Vai CD also has this blob, and no skipping at all. These "blobs" suck anyway. I like to see the back of my CD's cristal clear. Mauricio
