I already ordered mine last week :) It didn't get shipped until the weekend
though, and who knows how long it'll take to get here by regular mail.

I'm just getting into these guys myself (thanks to the Jam for a fine
recommendation!) The biggest similarity I hear to DT (besides both being
progressive metal) is that to my ears, VP's instrumentation sounds like DT's
Awake sound - at least on the Far Off Grace and Spirit of Live Cd's.
Especially the snare drum (and it's reverb), guitars, and synths. Which to
me is a good thing - I love those sounds.

VP seems maybe a bit less technical and dense than DT to me. But they
certainly don't suck! I really like this band.

Anybody out there know what kind of 'verbs (models and patches) were used on
the snare (hell, on the whole drum kit) on Awake? The drum sound there
totally kills me. And I'm a guitar player!

And for that matter, what kind of keys did KevMo play when he was with DT?
I know he used Roland, but does anybody know what models?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of VP's discs. Anybody who
hasn't should give them a spin.

    Paul

might have to search for them on AudioGalaxy.com and get back with you
    after hearing some samples.........

There are many Zappa albums that would be good to start out with, and to
identify them, you need to know which era of Zappa is your favorite. I
divide them into several eras: Original Mothers, the Flo & Eddie years,
the George Duke era, the Bozzio band, 82-84, and the big band from 1988.
That list can be shredded to pieces, I know, but it works for me.
Anyway, to narrow down the choices for your first few FZ CDs, here are a
few that I would not recommend you purchase at first:

Jazz From Hell: Almost all electronic. This album is really good, but
it's not indicative IMO of most of his work.

Weasels Ripped My Flesh: There is more than one good track on here, but
it helps to have a bit of background in FZ before you tackle this one.

Lumpy Gravy: This is a soundscapes album, not about songs. Save it for
later. I've never heard Civilization Phaze 3, but from what I've heard,
it's similar to Lumpy Gravy in that respect. If I'm wrong, someone
    please correct me.

FZ Meets the Mothers of Prevention: Lots of Synclavier stuff, like Jazz
from Hell. There are a few songs with lyrics, but the big track from
this album is a 12 minute collage of electronically manipulated
soundbites from 1985 when FZ testified in front of the US Congress about
    "porn rock."

Thing Fish: You will not appreciate how great this album is if it is
your introduction to Zappa. The more of FZ's music and background you
know, the more you'll probably like this one.

The Lost Episodes: This was not intended as a first purchase. It's
mostly tracks of historical interest, and for existing fans first and
    foremost.

Francesco Zappa: This album is all Synclavier, and according to the
liner notes, it is music written long ago by an Italian composer with a
familiar name. It's not hard to listen to, but it's not FZ either.

200 Motels: I recommend you watch the movie first, then listen to the
    album.

Also, Make a Jazz Noise Here was mentioned earlier here. Steve Vai does
not play on this album - it's all from the 1988 tour, when Mike Keneally
had joined the band. I love this one - it is a collection of what FZ
described as some of his more difficult-to-play songs.

I hope this helped, and wasn't too annoying. Take care,
    Mark Peters

I guess I should have explained more about hearing
Joe's Garage at 9. I have 2 brothers, one of which is
14 years older than I. That would have put him at 23.
I was visiting him at FSU and when my parents left,
he says "hey Rob, you gotta hear this, but don't tell
Mom and Dad". He had to explain "why does it hurt
when I pee" to me, but I got a lot of the other things
especially the sick solo section in "Wet T-shirt
Night". These are the same brothers who took me to
see ELP when I was 6!!!! Now that was a show!

Yo, is it safe to assume a live DVD is also on the way?
It would be sacrilege not to release a DVD too. :(

I told before that the possible live cd will be from Istanbul - Turkey 2000
which was the last show of the tour.,He mentioned that it was being recorded
    and will be released later..
that night there were also many cameras around there :)))))
but Im not sure if they were the press or the recording crew

I also have 2 clips on my site of Vai Istanbul 2000 concert taken from a local
    tv station
