"Astroglide," eh? I'd ask how Derek is familiar with that product, but
that would be too slippery a topic...

Hey Jammers,
Just thought I'd let y'all know there is a generic form of
Viagra available.
It's called Micoxarising and I hear tell it's fairly cheap though
I wouldn't need any since the opening sequence to "Home" always gives me
a boner.

Never heard of Jimmy Johnson... hmm. He's only played on a couple of =
hundred records or so!
I got at least 30 discs with him playing, but then again it's not on any =
prog. music. (he's an LA based session player, he've played a lot with =
Lukather & Simon on different things and projects)
He's an awesome bass player, class, style & the chops.... plus a groove =
to die for!

I'm familiar with Johnson's work on several Holdsworth albums... the guy is
a fantastic jazz bassist. Sounds like Derek has once again put together
quite a lineup. For info on Jimmy Johnson, check out:

I read on some Paul Gilbert website that he was going to be on Derek
Sherinians "upcoming album." I went to both their sites and I see
nothing about this. Can anyone confirm this or shoot this down as
yet another rumor? Thanks.

>I would start out with Dead Winter Dead. (And not just 'cause it was my first, hehe) This is >a fantastic album and gives a good indication of where Savatage are now, musically - of >course I haven't heard the new one, Poets & Madmen, which has been called a "change"....

I might go with Edge of Thorns as a first Sava disc, because (even though they change members almost every CD) that was where their big transition came into play....It was the first album with Zak Stevens, their last with Criss Oliva, so it kind of foretells the next 8 years, while still looking back at the previous 8-9. The songs are more indicative of where they went afterwards, hinting at the somewhat symphonic metal direction they were to take through the end of the 90s, but with some songs retaining the crunch of where they had been.

As for Poets and Madmen, my first impressions is that they tailored it for Jon Oliva's vocals, returning to some of the riff styles that they used back in the 80s. A first couple of listens put me in the mind more of Gutter Ballet than of any of the stuff they did since, and while I'm liking it a lot, I can't help but keep thinking at certain points, " this part would have been soooo cool with Zak singing." This may well turn out to be one of those, "What might have been..." albums for me. The obvious dichotomy of zak=poets and jon=madmen (vocals wise) would have been interesting to hear.

Too many people are afraid of the Wrath of Ahtrap, it seems. :)

Speaking of which, I wonder how many true old-timers are still left on the
'jam. I mean, I wouldn't consider myself a true old-timer, since I only
joined in '97, but I have a feeling that there aren't very many of us
left. There's what, Korgy, Pellaz, Partha, Ptacek, Al, Coldie's back...
but who else is around that's been a high-profile user (sorry, I obviously
don't know you five-year lurkers, heh) for several years?

Didnt Jimmy Johnson play with Allan Holdsworth?

Hmm... what do people think of Steve Lukather. The only stuff of his I have
is this instructional video he did and a concert with Jeff Beck and Santana both
of whom completely wipe the floor with him. What's he been doing recently?

Well, I'm not at all high profile, except for the brief exchange of
mini-flames with MP about the Deep Purple gigs(which I'm sure no one here
remembers besides me) way back in '98, but I've been here since around the
same time as you, Cloak. I read it all, just don't post much.

And I miss Bafu.

The other day, I had a discussion with my brother about progressive music=
=2E We
have some so-called progressive albums that we really like (full discogra=
phy
of DreamTheater, Spock's Beard, Vanden Plas (The God Thing actually does
resemble DT a lot), PoS, and some others), so I thought I knew what was
progressive.
I had this tune written which I concidered to be quite progressive. So I =
made
my brother listen to it, and he replied:'That's not prog. Your chords are=
all
wrong to be prog, blablablabla' Anyway, in short, he said that in order t=
o be
progressive, all chords should resolve in the next, while that was not th=
e
case in that song. Hence, the song was plain old anything-but-prog.
It made me think about something. I always thought about progressive musi=
c as
a complex melodic-oriented music. I never thought about theoretic
characteristics, as he did.
As some of you in this list are actual musicians with actual knowledge ab=
out
music, I'm asking you: what is it that makes prog prog?

I suggest that, since a lot of people (especially those of us who have
been on for a year or more) have seen this discussion WAY more than once,
that you check the ytsejam archives and look for answers there. :)

But truly, I think it's so pointless to try and put a label like progres-
sive on something you write. I mean, unless you're trying to cater to a
certain audience, why do you have to label your music? I dunno, I just
think that if you're arguing over whether it's prog or not, somebody's
missing the point of the music. I always hate these 'what is prog'
discussions that start up because it encourages us to limit our thinking.
Let's not do that.
