Well, it depends on what you're looking for. My first choices for prog-
and prog-metal stuff are Exploding Ned's Tunes, at
    http://www.explodingneds.com, and www.lasercd.com, The Laser's Edge. I
also recommend The End Records at www.theendrecords.com for heavier
stuff, and Dark Symphonies at www.darksymphonies.com for heavy/dark
stuff. Both have excellent prices and good shipping deals.

For guitar-based CDs and other cool stuff, there's Guitar 9 at
www.guitar9.com. And my usual fallback for CDs is www.cdnow.com, which
often has pretty good prices and gives me back a commission on my
    purchases through my site. :)

hey there folks, brief question about Pain of Salvation. i've heard LOT'S of talk about them here on the 'jam, and it's all been pretty positive. well, i hadn't heard anything by them until today, when i caught the video for "Ashes" from the album The Perfect Element. can someone please tell me that they get better than this?? granted, it's not a bad sond, but certainly nothing worth writing home about. the guitar solo at the end was impressive, but the song itself was pretty bland. now, i thought i remembered someone on here saying that The Perfect Element was one of their best albums. i'm hoping that this song was just one of the crap one's that seem to always wind up being the singles from an album. please tell me that it's get's better than "Ashes". also, and maybe this is just a result of it being a poor video, but the sound quality was similar to something that was recorded underwater. was this the fault of the video, or is that a "trademark sound" of P.O.S.??? i hope not. hope to get some feedback. thanks a lot. -eric

If you were looking for a lot of guitar pyrotechnics and whatnot, "Ashes" is probably the worst song on the album (it's fairly basic). Many of the other songs on "The Perfect Element" are more technical, but Pain of Salvation really isn't a wanky band. They're more about mood and dynamics. As far as sound quality goes, I prefer the sound of "One Hour By The Concrete Lake" personally, but it ain't bad on TPE. I would advise not judging the band (or any band, for that matter) by one MPEG video. Unless, of course, the video is from any band featured on TRL, in which case, judge away!

    Brief answer...

Be careful when taking a song out of its context (this advice more to the band for making the video than anyone here). "Ashes" is part of a larger concept. IMO, if ever there was an album to take in as a whole, it's The Perfect Element...and taking any of the songs out of that context doesn't really work.

Beyond that, it should be noted that Pain of Salvation is your average prog band. If you start listening to them expecting to be wowed by technical prowess, you'll probably find the album "bland" (to use your words). They've got skill, and that's apparent on the disc, but they focus more on the story and on the emotions rather than the wankery. If you start listening to the album with an open mind and a bit of patience, you might pick up on what they were trying to do. Then again, you might not. It took me a few good listens to wrap my mind around it. I haven't been able to put the CD away for long since then.
