The vocals are harsh. Perhaps not quite full death growls...... But more
like an aggressive, growly yell.
Musically..... they are brutally heavy, and extremely crazy. They are ALL
over the place with their strange time signatures and poly-rhythms... in
fact, I've even heard them referred to as "math-metal" before.
I'll get to see them September 16th, openining up for Tool! Whoo-hooo!

Meshuggah is my new favorite heavy heavy band. Yes,
there are cookie monster vocals, however the
musicianship makes up for it. There's one song were
right in the middle of this insane music, all stops,
and this elegant accoustic guitar comes out of nowhere
for a bit, and then insanity runs rampant again. I
like stuff like this, it keeps me on my toes. Being a
drummer, I kinda pride myself in the fact that I can
usually figure out what meter a song is in. I can't
do that with this group. I know this is my taste and
your tastes may differ.
Also about Sherinians keyboard setup now, I saw a
pic of it in Modern Drummer. It looks like to me, he
may be doing that to save his wrists from carpal
tunnel(however you spell it)syndrome. After seeing
Steve Smiths snare drum setup on his kit, I recently
adjusted my drums flater for the same reason.

I've noticed quite a number of posts recently regarding Meshuggah and the like. I agree with
Graham when he refer's to being more interested in hearing 'new' variations on typical
progressive fare, even from the extreme metal community, than the same old boring, rehashed,
power/progressive redundancy that rear's it's head so often. The same can be said of other
genre's including spicing up the progressive scene with elements of R&B (or, god forbid!
Funk!), new-age, Trance/ambient, death metal, and even country (a little Tiles, anyone?).
Well, there are probably atleast 1-2 examples of all of the above floating around, albeit in
obscurity or anonymity, but still, the upteenth derivative of Dream Theater/Queensryche/Fates
Warning doesn't really do much for me either.
I've actually curbed alot of my Progressive CD purchasing recently because I've just not heard
anything tremedously new and inspiring recently, although of late, I have been impressed with
Dysrhythmia, Andromeda, Paul Oakenfold, Persephone's Dream, Brave, Digital Ruin, some of the
new Tool, Outcast and Greyhaven.
Granted, in scientific measurements, the percentage of 'progressive' elements to some of these
new bands is immeasureable to the prog purists, but then again, holding bands to a specific
barometer of progressive apptitude is somewhat disengenuous and a tad bit crossing the line
from enjoyment to over-analysis, which, of course, is something I just did myself a bit! Ah,
the unstable infalibility of us humans... preposterous! Ha!
Anyhow the only reason I am deviating somewhat into this topic, is that, subsequent to the
above musings, I am actively attending to bringing these more diverse elements into a somewhat
progressive arena in my personal music (insert obligatory plug here _____) and I think I am on
the right path working the trance/ambient element into the neo-progressive niche I am working
within.
Anyhow, sometimes moving the discussion down divergent avenues with common themes makes 'the
jam' more interesting, eh? Avoiding the traps of flame-wars (although many are damn
interesting at times), proper home maintainance and appliance-repair discussions are
beneficial (whut?).
