Did someone say COUNTERPARTS? That is their strongest CD in years, since, ah... PRESTO! And much better than TFEcho, IMHO. TEST FOR ECHO was monotonous (for Rush, atleast,
who I expected greater things). I don't know much more about the new CD other than the few songs I've heard (and I'm AVOIDING the download the entire CD urge, not to
mention the lacking capabilities of my trusty old 56k'er) and all the various postings on all the Rush newsgroups and forums I'm privy to, but one would think it's the
second coming. Oh wait, it is... of Rush. But, while I am impressed, the new stuff sounds GOOD, but NOT GREAT mind you. Better than TFE, but I personally MISS the ambience
and atmosphere of SIGNALS and GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, the dramatics and majesty of POWER WINDOWS and HOLD YOUR FIRE. That said, UNLIKE TFE, I will picking up VAPOR TRAILS the
day it comes out...

As if one can't tell I miss synths listening to my shit... damn them frogs (and indicator species).

For the record, I dunno if you ever saw the interview that stirred this all
up, but when you read Neil's comments in context - especially when he ended
his bar/garage band statement with a question mark, it appears he truly did
*not* know who was involved with the tribute. Chances are some bozo made the
bar/garage band comment and Neil took it for face value. Considering that
Mr. Big toured with Rush (and that Alex and he jammed with Billy Sheehan
during a soundcheck when Geddy ran late), I highly doubt he would have made
such a comment. Also, didn't the Steve Morse Band open at least a few dates
for Rush in the mid-eighties? Same would hold true there. :-)

The first time I heard Rush was in my mom's car while skipping church.
They played Limelight and I was hooked. After Power Windows everything
became watered down, for me. Counterparts was at least a return from
pop hell.

As far as Rush having DT open for them . . . forget about it. Folks, it
is called ego. Everyone has one and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
 Yes, DT would benefit from such large exposure in America but would
Rush benefit from being upstaged? That I think is the heart of the
matter.

This really is old news . . . Peart's comments about the people on the
tribute album were uncalled for. Though his comments about tribute
albums are not. If someone really wants to do a tribute album then the
money made should go to the band being honored. Working Man money went
to Magna Carta records. So Pearts comments about people making money
off the Rush name are on the mark. On the other hand, calling the
artists who did it out of love "garage bands" is an ignorant comment at
best.

With the cool drum intro to One Little Victory I thought all of my fears
were going to be dashed. Then came the rest of the song......I am
crossing all of my fingers and toes. Lets all hope the rest of the
album is better.

Well, technically, some of it did go to Rush thanks to the playing of
copywritten material. No idea how much this amounts to, though I'd suspect
it's not a lot.

I agree with Hansen's theory on the "bar band" comment. Many of the
musicians on the tribute are from Magna Carta's own stable, but, at the
same time, a lot aren't, and you've got to believe Peart would've heard of
some of 'em.

Let's also remember this. Rush seems to be past the opening act stage.
They, like Dream Theater are doing, are taking the whole night for
themselves, which allows for longer sets. And that is fine with me.

Dream Theater is at a point in their careers where it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for them to release an Anthology.

I mean, Fates Warning did it. Pain of Salvation has released a "Best of" series as well, beginning with their first album and ending with their last. ;)

But my question is...

If Dream Theater released a "Best of" CD, should they include their big hit, "Pull Me Under"??? Isn't that a HORRIBLE dilemma? Obviously it helped them gain popularity, but really isn't close to what they're capable of and they supposedly don't play it in concert anymore. Oh, to please the general public or please the true fans?

What do you think?

I don't think, at this point, that the general public is ever going to "get" Dream Theater. They have carved out a nice successful niche for themselves, with a large enough base of dedicated fans, to where I think they are comfortable. And certainly their music has gotten better since their label stopped pushing them to go mainstream.

Even given this, tho', I would definitely include "Pull Me Under". For one, they are playing it live again, so obviously they've made peace with it. For two, it _is_ the song through which a large percentage of their fans probably first heard of them. I'm sure Spock's Beard or Fate's Warning would've killed for such a hit to propel them just enough to where they could go on to do exactly what they want to do like Dream Theater does now.

And heck, I still like the song. I don't understand the big antipathy towards it.
