    Superior's "Ultima Ratio" review:

About a week ago I got the new Superior CD in the mail, "Ultima Ratio".
It's been in the CD player ever since. I really enjoyed their first CD,
Behind, but wasn't quite as fond of the follow-up, Younique, so I wasn't
sure where they'd go with the new one. I have to say it kicks ass. Bernd's
guitars are in full force, mixing well with the keyboards, and the music
has a lot of dynamics and atmosphere.
My wife says that it reminds her of SFaM. I can see the
comparison in places but maybe because I've listened to them more this CD
still has that "Superior" sound to me. "Ultima Ratio" is a concept album
which may be why it reminds her of SFaM. The lyrics are interesting but
I haven't tried to follow the story closely yet. I find that certain
sections remind me of Awake and I&W-era DT. I think it's due to the
orchestral-like (string) sound of the keyboards and the way they're used.
I really like how they've used the keys to add depth and atmosphere to
the sound while also providing the occasional lead. The vocals are
also very good and provide nice melody and variety.
If you like previous Superior CDs you should definitely pick
this one up. And if you haven't heard them before "Ultima Ratio" would
    be a good starting point.

The new DT tour dates are on the web. The problem is that about 10 dates are
not on ticketmaster yet. Does anyone have any idea when these others will be
    going on sale?

Hooray! Dream Theater will perform in my city (Orlando) in August!
This will be my first DT concert. But it starts at 8 PM and
they have two opening acts: Kings X and Joe Satriani.
Has anyone on this list seen a DT show with not one but TWO
opening bands? I've read on this list that DT has really long
concerts. Will they play until 2 AM?
Personally, I'd be real happy if DT played the whole double album
    "Six Degrees..." and nothing else.

personally, i wouldn't be that upset if they did just that as well.
granted, i love the "oldies", but i am really in love with this most
    recent album.

greetings jammers, since i haven't seen this posted yet, i'm gonna' take the time now to do so. i'm sure most all DT fans will enjoy hearing this, but especially those here on the jam who are fellow drummers. i just picked up the July issue of Modern Drummer, and in it were the results of the 2002 Readers Poll. Mr. Portnoy had quite the year, as he seems to have had for the last several. this one is no exception. the awards were as follows:

#1 Progressive Drummer #1 Clinician #1 Educational Video/DVD "Liquid Drum Theater DVD"

and then comes the "Recorded Performance" catergory. there are 5 places that can be filled. MP occupied an absolutely unprecedented 3 slots in the same year. all five awards were:

#1 Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater "6DoIT" #2 Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater "LSFNY" #3 Danny Carey - Tool "Lateralus" #4 Carter Beauford - DMB "The Lillywhite Sessions" #5 Mike Portnoy - Transatlantic "Bridge Across Forever"

congradulations to Mike on a phenominal year in drumming. just goes to show you that those who know, care.

Hey, checked out the website(much under construction) and the one mp3. I really liked the music, very fates-y, maybe a little more technical and complex. Impressed with the drumming. However, I did not care for the singer and I don't see myself getting used to him. I also didn't like the overdubbed higher range vocals..... Well there's my opinion of one song......... Trevor

From: Alexis Ramos <alexis_ramos@yahoo.com> Subject: All That I Bleed (formerly known as Dreamline) Hello!!! I want to put in my word about a new band from Puerto Rico that's soon going to be releasing it's debut cd. The band is called All That I Bleed, although it was formerly known as Dreamline. For those of you who have the Fates Warning Tribute album, they are the band who covered the song Nothing Left to Say. I've had their new cd for a few days, and I must say that IMO it's great. Their sound is reminiscent of Fates Warning around Perfect Symmetry and No Exit, although they can't be labeled as a Fates clone. They add some fusion stuff to some of their songs, and they have a great mix of heaviness and melody. The guys are great musicians, especially the bass player and the guitar player, who can shred while still maintaining the melodic aspect of his solos. The drummer and lead singer are very solid as well. The singer's voice might get a little time to get used to, but he's a very good singer. If you want to check them out (which I recommend you sould), you can go to their website www.allthatibleed.com and read all about them as well as download an mp3 of one of their songs, I Stand Alone. Information about the release of the cd will be available on their website. Any feedback will be appreciated. Bye!!!

I think its bullshit. I love Mike and appreciate his skill, but for god's sake we need to give other drummers some room. He's not that good in my opinion to be named best progressive drummer for 8 years in a row!! </rant>

All I am, and all that I would ever want to be, It's just a travesty.
