Hi,
Has anyone else had any trouble making copies of 6 Degrees of Inner
Turbulence. I'm trying to make a copy that I can leave at work, but every
time I try, Nero comes back with some sort of invalid read error. Is there
some type of anti-copy protection on this cd?

None that I've run into. Use a copy program like Exact Audio Copy rather
than Nero.

About half of the 6DOIT CDs out there are full-copy protected; you will
_not_ be able to burn them. Half are regular unprotected CDs. There is
no way to tell which is which.
I'm rather pissed at DT (or at least their label) for condoning this
shit. I have a right to make back-up/archival copies of this media by
law. They have taken away that right.

No you don't. All the law says is that *if* you somehow manage to make
a backup copy, then you can't be prosecuted for it. (Assuming we're

Like hell. Under current law, RIAA members get a few cents per blank CD, DAT, or video media sold as a royalty against the possibility that someone will backup their content to such blank media. If they have now decided to remove the option to even make a backup media (and, for CDs protected like 6DOIT, the ability to even play the damn thing in certain car stereos or through certain media players), then they no longer have the right to collect those royalties. Since they are still collecting those royalties, they are _obligated_ to make sure that their content-distributed media of choice _can_ be backed up by the consumer, ie, me.

Not that I've noticed. I've been able to play, rip, copy the CD with every player/utility at my disposal.

As a general definition, I would define prog-rock/metal as the standard forms of the respective genres played at the highest level of competency and excellence, with songs designed to showcase that excellence as opposed to showcasing pop songwriting (not that excellent songwriting isn't a part of it, but the focus is more on instrumentation and composition as opposed to just catchy choruses).
For prog-rock, I would define Yes, King Crimson, Kansas, Genesis, et al, as the most popularly-known standard bearers.
For prog-metal, I would define Dream Theater, Marillion, Tool (in an oddly minimalist way), and Justice-era Metallica and Rust In Peace-era Megadeth as the examples most likely to be known by people who wouldn't call themselves "fans" of prog.

Check your copyright law. Graham is correct, you don't have the legal RIGHT to make copies of copyrighted material, you DO have the DEFENSE of Fair Use if you do somehow find a way to copy it.
Before you reply, please do a minute or two of research. I just did a 10 page research paper on Copyright Law. I'm certain of this.

Yes, Rush, ELP, Pink Floyd as classic prog, that's probably essential since that's where it begins. Any of the modern ones, really, so far as I can see. Also check on amazon, their listmania thing seems to be fairly valid sometimes. Just search for a DT CD, and then look for links on the right-hand side.
Stereotypically, prog consists of a repertoire of songs of symphonic structure, usually with conceptual lyrics. The sound itself mixes baroque and classical with bebop, sometimes incorporating heaving elements of classic rock and NWoBHM. Songs are written in modal keys, with jazz-like chord progressions, and odd time signatures, with complex structures and many changes. Line-ups of bands consist of drums with an extended percussion section, bass guitar, one or two lead guitars, and keyboards. Vocalists are often classically trained, operatic voices with long ranges (3 to 5 octaves). Lyrical themes touch on many depths, and are often open to interpretation - could say they are poetic. Am I missing any aspects of it?
For modern prog, you could say that elements of hard rock and metal are incorporated through use of heavier guitar sounds, 7-string guitars, heavy drums, and low bass.
