Opinions, perspectives, viewpoints... all have validity here, especially in the eye of the beholder and from the point of (literal) origin. Some people are taking the debate of 'overplaying' and 'minimalism' personal. Which is understandable. Dream Theater fans, and, oftimes it seems, progressive music afianado's in general, take their music very seriously, often to a
fault, but at the expense of sharing intriguing viewpoints and information? Haha, never! That;s why though I disagree with people who would argue points based purely on subjective opinion (such as, the level of instrumental ability for a particular band member, who's music is more simplistic than another, the best song on said CD, why so-and-so's voice sucks that
individual night, etc etc etc, ad naseum, ad infinitum), I generally don't make it a personal goal to debate the insubstantials of a personal opinion. I find it more productive to state my personal opinion and why I would disagree or agree with other viewpoints.
But that's just my perspective. I just thought I;d hedge my bets here and post some ramblings on what I've been reading and reacting to here.
Sorry for the abject humorous admist some serious comments but many times, as I'm sure plenty of people do, I have to laugh at some of the debates that arise here. Or that I find myself entering, perpetuating or even facilitating! Part of being a Jam (or any other forum member in, well... good? standing, I suppose!) member! Bottom line: Sometimes we find this talk
amusing, other times informative, other times tiresome and sometimes dreadful, but always entertaining!
PS: I thought I was sorry I ever instigated the 'Irregardless is not a word' debate via a casually-worded paen to Enchant, but to my supreme surprise and sarcastic nature, I find myself laughing all the way back to the kitchen for tea and crumpets while I peruse the Jam to see what few comments pop up here and there about one of the current topics of discussion that has
yet to die a fiery, destructive death! (If you though words like that were inflammable... sorry).
Anyhow, I still don't what I;m doing typing all this ado about nothing, so, I'll make like Dick Cheney at Senate Hearing and beat it.

I would have to agree. I have never been more
impressed with anyone else live - and I've heard
Labrie on some good nights. :)
Where in NJ did you see them play? I think I missed
their NJ show, unfortunately, but I saw them in
L'amours at the end of the year. Had to wait through
some other less amazing bands, but it was worth it!
In other news, anyone here going to the first NYC show
(the 27th)? I'm going to be there with my best
friend, in the balcony I believe, rockin' out. Hope
to see some folks there!
Alex

And in addition to all that, most people on the list seem to be in general
agreement on many of the points about which we argue, subjective or otherwise.
So why do we keep doing it in the first place?
- Ilia.

I know I'm not Jon, but I saw them play twice in Jersey (we are talking
about SyX, right?). Once at that motorcycle shop in N. Plainfield in
January, and once at Obsessions in Randolph in September. I was also at
both L'Amour shows (March, September).

Hey all. I was listening the other day as usual to my collection of
prog-isms and came across my copy of On The Virg's Serious Young
Insects.
For those of you know that haven't heard it, it's NUTS. It features Phil
Turcio on keys, Evripides Evripdou on bass, Simon Hosford on guitar and
Virgil Donati (planet x) on drums. Simply wacky jazz/prog instrumentals
with crazy solos, time signatures and progressions.
i was curious however to know what other records Hosford, Turcio and
Evripidou have appeared on (besides the new Sam Aliano disc). They are
all incredible musicians as showcased on OTV and I'd like to hear some
more of them. Ideas?

Ain't has been a word for a while now... it comes from Victorian English. It
just went out of use, but has been coming back lately I guess.

IMO, ain't is a word to be used in the same manner as "oughtn't," which is
also a word that is infrequently used, or "mightn't," or the like. It's
just that "irregardless," much like "judgement," (which should be
"judgment") were never words in the first place, and only came to be
because people were using them incorrectly. Words should NEVER be created
to make something that was original incorrect correct.

Are you the bass player from three years ago? Freut mich, Dich noch mal zu
sehen.
Anyhoo:
Can anyone especially Stateside help me with a bit of research? Has anyone
seen burn-your-own CD stands from Liquid Audio, IBM or such at retailers?
Did they work?
And can anyone point me somewhere which talks about various ways of burning
CDs: is it generally done from MP3s, can someone tell me whether a .wav is
or isn't what streams off a recorded CD, etc. etc.
Whew. First post in 2 years. That was a lurk and a half.
