Andrew, sure we 'shouldn't use it', BUT... it's in the dictionary, so that gives one some leeway, and the advantage of semi-legitimacy! PLus, consider it irreverent literary slang, then! I, for one, find it amusing, as do I find this whole discussion, and I can imagine some lurking English professor (and obvious progressive fan) shaking their head in unamused literary horror! The damn kids of today, what will those unconformist bastards come up with next! Argh! I think I may send this 'word' to GWBush for use in one of his upcoming speeches!

Nah, he'd just screw things up and use it correctly. It's pretty scary
when the guy that unleash a nuclear holocaust upon the rest of the known
world at the touch of a button can't even pronounce "nuclear" properly.

It's pretty scary when the guy that makes fun of the guy that could unleash
a nuclear holocaust upon the rest of the known world at the touch of a
button forgets a very important "could"...

    I'm not late on my reply, am I? :}
No, it's not an overdub. On the part you're referring to Mike is playing
triplets on the bass drum. Considering that he rarely doesn't play his parts
live as they are heard on the record, in the case of overdubs or to spice
things up for example, I'd say that he chose not to play it because it
probably won't be heard as good on a live performance.

I believe "d'oh" has been added to the dictionary as well. The spell
it without the apostrophe, but it's there, so it's now an official word
    ;)

I know. :) That's why I used that as an example. But it's no less a real
word than "irregardless" is; it's just an exclamation of a single
syllable. Just as "GHAA!" shouldn't be a word, neither should "d'oh." :)

This was sent to me by a friend of mine. He has some good points...no?
Don't kill the messenger I'm just repeating his opinion. If you want to
    reply to him
send it to me at constabl@comcast.net. He doesn't know I'm posting this

and would probably be pissed at 1000 emails.

"Portnoy has reached the pinacle of obnoxsiousness.
Quote from the May Modern Drummer "I remember when
Neil Peart scaled down to a single bass drum. As a
fan, I was disappointed. So I came up with the idea
of putting together a huge kit." So was for about 5
seconds, this is a grown man being upset about another
drummer removing a bass drum from his set. How much
bigger of an asshole can he get. After AWAKE his
playing has become overbearing and annoying. I once
said there is no such thing as overplaying. I now
retract that statement and stand corrected. Peart,
Cobham, Coluita, Weckl, Donati, Bozzio, and Zonder
could play a solo over a 3:00 pop song and to me it
still is not over playing. That being said Portnoy
has proven he has no dynamic ability, and no evidence
of song structure, and the ability to ruin a song
written by 4 other great musicians. I now know why
Rudess chose Bozzio for a drummer for his solo album.
In the May article he also states he almost quit the
band after FII. He should have, imagine the calibre
of music Dream Theater would be with someone like
Bozzio or Donati. This email is titled Portnoy/DT
bashing. The only bashing i'll do with the rest of
the band is why do they let him get away with the
bullshit. They do not need him they dont owe him
anything, get rid of him. The entire article he
spends trying to validate himself as great drummer,
writer, and producer. It is sickening. Mabye if they
would have kept a producer with enough balls to tell
Portnoy knock it the fuck off their music may be
somthing special. I cant take him
anymore. On the 3/23 I am going to see the other 4
members of Drean Theater and imagine someone else is
playing the drums. Thank god I have a good
imagination. Attachted is a picture of his new kit
played in the studio and on tour The Siamese Monster.
How fucking gay is that. I hope you enjoy reading my
    vent. Fuck Portnoy."

To the best of my knowledge, the editors of dictionaries, Webster in
particular, look for new terminology in arts and sciences to add to
dictionaries. But also, they look at the pop culture - TV shows,
popular/entertainment publications, etc. - for commonly used colloquial
expressions. After a certain expression, however little it resembles a
real word, is encountered a certain number of times from several
people, it is put up for consideration of becoming a word. "Doh," for
example, has been in use since the 60s, although it has not been
    popularized until more recent decades.

And just to challenge the second point you make, why couldn't an
exclamation or interjection be considered a word as well? Isn't any
part of speech technically a word?

    - Ilia.

This guy doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about at all.
If he doesn't like Dream Theater's music, I could understand him not
liking Portnoy, seeing as how Portnoy is responsible for writing a
major part of it. He has no dynamic ability or song structure? You've
    lost your fucking mind!

And I have a strong feeling that one of the reason Rudess didn't pick
Portnoy for his solo album is because Portnoy hates Magna Carta. Why
the hell would Rudess have joined DT if he couldn't take Portnoy, after
spending two weeks working on LTE? Being the caliber musician that he
is, I'm sure he would've figured it out if he didn't want to be in a
    band with the guy.

And if a man, who is probably an infinitely superior percussionist to
whoever it was who wrote that, wishes to put together a drum kit to his
choosing, and states that he was influenced - positively OR negatively
    - by a design idea of one of his heroes, I say more power to him. And
if he wants two drum kits in one, I'll stand by my statement.

Anyone else have thoughts on that bullshit of a rant?

    - Ilia.
