The copy of the rerelease with the gold foil had NO booklet with it. Nary
a lyric was in there, (unless you count the titles of the songs as being
partial lyrics. :)) Frankly I put the fold-out into storage and popped the
remaster into my Mechanic jewel case. I'm a bit disappointed with the
"limited edition" version, since it appears they're doing this with a
bunch of other albums to artificially increase demand.
Oh well... the price was right, and it does sound better (I think all the
remasters do is crank up the output volume. I have two copies of the
Police greatest hits, and the "digtally remastered version" not only has a
speedup problem on Roxanne (the beginning takes a bit to get up to speed),
it sounds louder and more distorted than the original, non-remastered
version. Thankfully the Dream Theater one doesn't sound too much worse
than the Mechanic release.)

Much as I've been trying, the single has not spoekn to me thusly... SO far as I can tell, and I'm sure I will get literally flamed for this, but it sounds rather pedestrian for Rush, unfortunately keeping in line with TfE. I guess my biggest issue is I miss the keyboards, although Counterparts, which was incredible, was keyboard-lite, also. I don't know. I've listened to the single a few times, and while it's a GREAT song for any other band, especially in this day and age of superficial pap, for Rush, it's rather bland and unobstrusive (to quote Neil). Hopefully, the rest of the CD will speak in greater tones...

Yep, and we as a group know better than to judge a CD by a single song. Can't wait to get my hands on this CD !

Hey all, not to get off topic here (just kidding!) but I've got 3 Dream Theater AWAKE Posters (they are approximately 36" long by 12" high, banner-like promotional posters from the AWAKE CD) I'm looking to divest myself of for a mere $3 (that includes s/h)... I know that's a poor free market entreprenuial cost breakdown, especially considering the posters are in good condition (they are folded, as originally sent to me by the record label when I worked for a corporate music retail chain years ago). If anyone's interested, email me. The first 3 people who request and pay for 'em will get 'em. Drop me a line, cats...
Also, this could be a good opportunity to get my VIRTUALITY CD at the same time (hint!)... lol!

Mike Portnoy posted a message on his forum about this re-release. He seemed pretty negative about it, since the band had no involvement in its creation (and won't see any money from it).

Hey guys & gals,
I probably won't be the first one to post a review, and it probably won't be the best one, but I feel like I should really get my act together this time and actually post on a concert I've been to. I'll leave the setlist to others, since I'm sure I'd only screw it up. So, since I'm skipping the most objective part of the concert, may the subjectivity begin!
Disclaimer: there is lots of embellishment and personal commentary. In other words: it ain't short and sweet. Do with that information as you please.
I tried to leave work early to get home to get back to New York (when you consider that I work in the city you will realize how nuts this is). And it says "tried" because as you may guess, I failed. I left the office at four-thirty, and stopped in the subway to refill my metrocard, which had 2 bucks left on it. It just so happens that NONE of the four machines there could process payment using my card - either debit or credit - but they took a long time to figure that out. Finally, in high dudgeon, I just grabbed my card out of the last machine and went. Did I mention that the lines on Tuesday at Port Authority were bad? They were worse yesterday. Continuous delays. Once I actually got on a bus, we got stuck in the tunnel. Bumper to bumper traffic. It was like this most of the way home. Needless to say, I got home around when I usually do.
Left at 7pm to drive back into New York, and this time around, there was NO traffic. When I realized it was the day before Passover, the light went on.. and it took us less than half an hour to get to the theater, with some huddling, freezing fans hanging outside (all exits are final). I then found a parking spot on the street two blocks away from the venue. Yes, feel free to reread that sentence. It's accurate. I had already resigned myself to a hefty parking garage bill, so this made my night. I double checked all the signs to make sure I wasn't parked illegally, and still was in disbelief.
We went in, glanced at the shirts, and decided not to buy any. I really have an abundance of DT shirts, so the only one I could have justified was the jersey - which I really really liked, btw - but $35 was just a little steep for me! Then we stopped by the food stands and I sold my soul for a bottle of water (read: $3) and Steph got a pretzel. Then we wandered up to the seats, which were quite sweet. Lower balcony, 2nd row, on the left side facing the stage (Myung's side). Didn't run into anyone, though I did keep a lookout, which was disappointing, but I guess we just blended into the crowd, or something. Long hair and black Ts abounded, after all.
Then the show started. And it was killer. LONG friggin' set, clocking in at about 3.5 hours. The guy behind me kept yelling "METROPOLIS!!!!!!" every time they started a new song; he finally stopped in the second set (6DOIT). Either he was very disappointed or he'd been mollified by then. Highlights for me (in order of my memory):
The Glass Prison - without a doubt, my favorite song off the new album. Great show opener.
Scarred - dang, it was SO cool to see this live. I am a die-hard Awake fan, but I never got to see them on that tour, so I considered my chances past. Pleasantly surprised!!!
Peruvian Skies - that transition when it goes from soft and gentle to brain-mashing is just the coolest thing ever.
Learning to Live - wow, old classic. They did pepper the set with these, it was very cool.
Home - nothing more to say to this. My favorite track off SFaM. Only Lie could have made me happier.
In sum, I'd say I was surrounded by an aura of bliss all evening. :) Of course, the guy four seats or so to my left could have had something to do with that.. he was puffing away, and it wasn't from shortness of breath or Marlboros...I mean, I saw CLOUDS of that stuff come wafting towards me. He was sharing the wealth.
Things to chuckle over: James's interesting second shirt. -The guy in the second row from the stage who got to sing into the mike at one point - he was so excited afterwards. -MP singing "Beauty and the Beast" at the end of a song, totally apropos. -One guy to the far left in the balcony in the intermission, staring with his head tilted towards the ceiling, eyes glazed, and mouth open like a fish out of water.. honestly one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Steph and I almost died laughing. He remained that way for a good five minutes. -The fact that Steph's older brother looks EXACTLY like Petrucci. I mean, EXACTLY!! I am going to ask him about his double life the next time I see him.. ever since Petrucci cut his hair and Joe trimmed his beard to this new goatee, the difference is impossible to tell from the stage.
Random musical notes: The guys were dead on all night. It was a really tight show. I was completely mesmerized by Myung's fingers.. when I could see them over the poofy hair of the woman in front of me. Jordan was grooving away on his stand, which was awesome to see. Someone mentioned that he looks like a conductor with his new 'do: he really does. Looked like he was enjoying himself immensely. James had a tough time with a couple of the high notes, but he was awesome for the most part, and backed off on most of them, so it sounded a bit different, but he only squealed a couple of times.
Post-show point of interest: that fight that broke out right outside the doors. Did anyone see how that started? I almost walked right into it, I was quite oblivious to most outside factors while leaving the show. I had a hard time telling how many people were involved, but it looked like four or five. Mostly pretty drunk/high. The cops showed up right as we got there. I guess it says a lot about me and Steph, since she backed up when she saw what was going on but I got myself behind a guy with big shoulders and stood on tippy-toes to check it out.
Made it back to the car, which was still there in one piece without a ticket, to my joy, and got home after midnight. This is the third time I've seen DT, and I've yet to be disappointed. That show was well worth every minute. *insert senseless happy babbling here* GO SEE THEM if you can! I'm very curious to see what's going down at tonight's show. I hope to see a setlist posted from tonight!
greetings from the DT fan that OVERSLEPT this morning and got in to work two hours late (gulp),
Alex

After hooking up with a MP.com poster who was kind enough to sell me his extra ticket, I was soooooooo fortunate to have been in attendance. It was touch and go right up until the the night of the show, standing in line at 5 PM with no ticket. Thanks Kris!
Yeah they got a little out of sync at the end. It was a working man riff/rythm by Myung and Portnoy while Petrucci and Rudess traded solos ala Dregs-Cruise Control. When they got down to trading 1 beat each, someone lost it. They kept going, and I think picking it up again at two beats apiece to try again and ended up doing 1 beat each with a rest in between (I think). It was way sick and I'm glad they didn't pull it off perfectly. It shows they ARE actually human!
It was great to see Petrucci actually pull of the full rake pick at the end of the Fatal Tragedy solo. Last time around in DC he just stayed on the first note (6th string) with no sweep. I almost shit when he pulled that one off! I seriously doubted it was possible to do live. I shall doubt no more - Petrucci is Godly!
Great show! They got a very impressive and well deserved extended ovation at the end of the encore that seemed like 5 minutes worth of cheering with nobody leaving the club.

I wasn't particularly impressed with that song either but, to be fair, it was only a demo version taped off the radio and encoded kinda crappily. Most of the instrumental parts got lost in a swirl of swishy cymbals. I'll still be buying that album. Thanks, Mr. Mosher, for the download location - I had no idea new Rush was circulating already.

Decent article, but leaves one question: what the heck are 24th notes?

When Mike saw me outside by the buses after the second Chicago show (both shows kicked ASS :)), he said right away without prompting "We're gonna really try to play Atlanta this summer, Paul," so a second round of US dates sounds like a done deal. They've been mentioning summer shows in other cities, too. Whether those dates will include a Southeastern swing -- which they should -- or a South Central swing, remains to be seen.
