Well, I haven't bought a lot of music this year, but for me, definitely the
best of 2002 is PoS: Remedy Lane.

6DOIT was good, but not my fave. For me, the best music of 2002 was all PoS,
because I bought all of their albums this year :P

Ooh, something else I forgot to put on that list - Chris Brooks: The Master
Plan. It's great! www.chrisbrooks.net for samples... *plug plug plug*

Stiletto In The Sand is actually just a barely 2 minute track, so you didn't
really get a sample. It's taken from Tyranny, their concept album from 1998
(I think?). Personally I think that's their best release. Legacy is good,
that is from last year, but I found Tyranny had a bigger impact.
Warning: Singer's voice takes some getting used to =)
If you want instrumental prowess, find the song Chased by SG. Now THAT's
    talent!!!

    Mike Shetzer <echo26@videotron.ca> asked:

    > Nope, haven't heard of them. What are they like?

They are basically an I&W era prog-metal style on
their only release. The singer is good, and there is a
female singer that backs on some songs. The music is
pretty good. The lyrics are little bit on the
"prog-metal cliche" side, but a lot people don't
really care about the lyrics anyway.

I would buy it again, after several listens. They
probably have samples somewhere out there in
    cyberspace.

What do you mean? Is he an 80's-style cheese merchant who usually sings at
a pitch that only dogs can hear? That's my worst kind of singing and the
reason why I can't listen to a lot of prog metal bands.

    In no particular order;

    Opeth - Deliverance
Perhaps not quite the brilliance of BWP, but still a great listen and
with lots of listens gets better and better. If you don't hear anything
new on this, then your haven't given it a proper listen.

    Nightwish - Century Child
Not as immediate as any of the previous NW albums, lots of songs that
get better and better with repeated plays. Makes up for the relative
disappointment of Wishmaster. Great to see them trying for something
different, less operatic vox from Tarja, more variety to the songs and
the new bassist Marco is awesome, with his majestic voice adding
    something to NW.

    Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
A nice mix of their thrashier past and Haven, agressive, yet melodic.
Saw them play a killer live set on Monday night in London.

    Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Superior and majestic, highly original and another about face from their
previous album. I only wish it were longer.

Blind Guardian - A Night At the Opera
Awesome production, great songs, that sometimes wear a little thin, with
the sing-a-long chorus in nearly every song, but still a cut above most
    of the power metal genre.

Vintersorg - Visions from the Spiral Generator
My first VS album, great mix of deathy, folk and progressive metal.

Power Of Omens - Rooms Of Anguish
Even better than the debut, more melodic songs, great drumming and
fantastic production. Technical, but not overbearing.
A truely great and truely progressive metal album.

    H Band - Live Body & Spirit
Double live album from Marillion singer Steve Hogarth, plenty of great
covers thrown in and fine performance from his band.

Paradise Lost - Symbol Of Life
A return to form, back to the heavy goth style of 'Draconian Times',
best thing they've done since that.

Andre Andersen - Black On Black
Solo album from RH keyboarder, surprise for me as I am not a fan of Ian
Parry's vox, works well here, not unlike RH, but heavier and more
abrasive than his debut album, 'Changing Skin'.

    Pagan's Mind - Celestial Enterance
Killer release, best prog metal I've heard in a long long time.
More melodic and song based than the previous, still technical and I can
forgive them for the most obvious Dream Theater rip off on 1 song.

    On the fringes
Geoff Tate - I like this far better than the recent 2 QR, not metal, but
    lots of great songs.

In Flames - Reroute To Remain
I like this stuff, I don't care what they used to sound like.

Insomnium - In the Halls Of Waiting
    Killer melodeath from Finland.

    Moonspell - Darkness And Hope
    A welcome return to form.

    Virtuocity - Secret Visions
Great neo power metal, some great singing from Peter James Goodman and
    Marco from NW.

    Threshold - Critical Mass
A real surprise me, considering how much I normally don't like them.

Mayadome - Into The Great Big Nothing
Unreleased 3rd album, perhaps prog rock, has heavy moments, deserves an
    officail release.

    Worst and or disappointing

    Dream Theater - 6DOIT
Pains me to say this, my fave band for many years, disc 1 is great, 2 a
    complete load of crap.

    Symphony X - The Oddyssey
Heavy yes, but lacking in memorable songs, production not what I'd
expect from a top class band. A bit disappionting, but I am prepared to
give it a few more chances.

    Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
Too smooth and not agressive enough for me, guitars at times buried in
the mix in favour of keys. I much prefer the previous 'APP'.

    Tunnelvision - Tomorrow
A real let down, lacking the power and songs that made the debut such a
    classic for me.

    Fish - Fellini Days
For me this is one too many bland and boring albums, MOR and reminds me
of Phil Collins in places. I won't be buying anything new from him
    again.

    Cornerstone - Human Stain
I loved the debut, 'Arrival', was hoping for more of the same, but
lacking any real depth to the songs, only a handful here worth hearing
    again.

    Lacuna Coil - Comalies
Not good or bad, just lacking in variety and seems to drag on and on
without going anywhere, a couple of good songs and not much more.

    Graham

AAAAAHHHHHH I love a post like this ;)

When I recommend Shadow Gallery to people I put them in this order:

    1. Carved in Stone. - first SG that I fell in love with (2nd in order
    of release)

    2. Tyranny - one of the best 1-2 punch cd openers I've ever heard..and
New World Order...nuff said ;) (3rd in release)

    3. LEgacy - Cliffhanger II babeeeeee (latest release)

    4. the Self titled Debut - first release....The Dance of Fools gets me
every time and if you get the above 3 cd's you might as well have the
    entire library

Coldfire the Gallery Mistress....kinda partial to this band..gee wonder
    why? ;)

I tend to agree here :)
Except I didn't really find CiS to be that strong a release.
As for the singer, he just has a unique sort of style. He can be very high
pitched at times, something quite ear bending. In Tyranny I find he does a
good job of balancing between the high pitch and the high "drama" sort of
singing. Listen to a typical song with singing to see what I mean. Luckily I
started off with Tyranny, I probably wouldn't have gotten into them if I
started with the self titled CD or CiS. It's all a matter of opinion,
fortunately. So give them a listen and return the CD if you don't like it.

I heard Jughead is quite poppy given who plays on it. I remember hearing the
word Foo Fighters to describe it. Was I squinting too hard to read it or is
    this assumption correct?

I hear what you are referring to in the singer. I've done a historical
listen to them a few times starting with the first and ending with
Legacy just to see the growth emerge cd to cd. I think that with
Legacy, Mike Baker is starting to find his stride and range vocal wise.

Red flag! SG is always controversial around here.
Interesting you should say "cheese". That's the most
popular criticism of SG. Mainly the lyrics and vocals
I think. Go ahead and check them out, but don't buy
the whole catalog without listening first.

There's you're warning, take it or leave it.

Jury is still out on this.

    5 stars, a great headbanger.

Hahaha... this album is ok, the songs aren't as memorable as the
    previous efforts.

Replay value is lacking for sure.

    Agreed.

Some songs sound good LOUD, but otherwise, I have to agree here.

I figured there would be these kinds of comments about dialup users. My D: drive is 40 megs full of the latest progressive metal full CDs that I've shared when I had DSL and ran my FTP site, but with dialup now, I'll pass. Since all dialup users are said to be leeches... I've already got the new Kamelot CD and Lost Horizon CD and would be glad to share, but I'm a leech........ real nice, guys..

We need more participation on the Ytsejam DC. The last several times I've jumped on there, all that's happened is that a bunch of (damned!) 56k'ers just sit there and leech off of me for hours at a time. I'm sure the other high speed (though my measly 30k/sec upload speed is only marginally "high speed") users are having the same issues.

It's a great idea, but we need some more high speed users logging on in order to make it worthwhile. Transferring MP3 (or much less SHN) files to/from 56k'ers is essentially worthless... Maybe we could/should expand it to some of the Forums out there (Portnoy/Petrucci/etc)?
