Andy Welihozkiy asked:
>Did Chris DeGarmo ever make any Solo Albums?
Chris DeGarmo recorded one project as part of a group called "Spys 4
Darwin" back in 2001. Spys 4 Darwin was comprised of DeGarmo, Sean
Kinney and Mike Inez of Alice in Chains, and Vin Dombroski of Sponge.
They recorded and released an EP called 'microfish,' but I do not know if
they got around to recording a full-length album.
You can read more about Spys 4 Darwin in an interview with Chris DeGarmo
from December 2001 at this URL:
http://homepages.nyu.edu/~dbb221/int-cd-rr.html
Considering that DeGarmo has been involved with QR for the past several
months and for the forseeable future and that Spys 4 Darwin was not meant
to be a full-fledged band or supergroup, it is unclear if Spys 4 Darwin
will produce more music. In fact, their website (from which you could buy
their EP) is no longer online.

For what it's worth, the first time I heard "Pull Me Under" (on WHJY,
Providence, RI), I seriously thought that Dream Theater was trying to
sound like Queensryche. After all, here is a progressive metal song with
a male singer of considerable range- it was easy for me to draw the
parallels. My sensitivity was heightened by the fact that I was a big fan
of QR at the time...
Shortly afterward, I borrowed 'Images and Words' from a friend. Although
there were quality performances from all members of DT, I did feel that it
was a bit mellower than QR and Metallica. I particularly thought that
"Another Day" was too close to "easy-listening" adult contemporary music
(hearing that sax made me go, "Oy, it's Kenny G.") I played I&W for my
father, who saw Led Zep on their first tour in the US and listened to WNEW
in its glory days in the late-60s/early-70s (the freeform rock era,
probably when Mike Portnoy's father worked there), and he told me it
"sounded like Queensryche, without the screaming." (I had played him
'Operation:LIVEcrime' not long before, which he did like.)
As time went on, I became a much bigger fan of DT than QR, but I still
have to give props to QR. They are a solid band that performs well live
as well as on record. Plus, if they had a positive influence on DT, they
must have some redeeming qualities.
Thanks for reading.

There are a few things that might need to be pointed out.
1. I remember that at one time the newspapers around the U.S. were
edited to be read at a sixth grade level (In modern times probably a bit
higher). Radio would have us limited to listening to bands at a level
inferior to that. Like every piece of music has to be "I will not eat
green eggs and ham"
2. Many contemporary bands have taken baby steps to placing "prog"
in the mainstream. Tool, Mudvayne, etc. have been introducing greater
amounts to joe public.
And "prog" takes on many forms, metal just happens to be the
topic of this forum. Other forms of "prog" are Yanni & Dave Matthews.
3. "Prog" is about artistry. If you "visualize" music, imagine
this... You're taking a drive through Colorado... Everything you see
around you (e.g. the trees, the birds, hell even the smog if you see
it).... That's prog......Punk is the broken yellow lines on the highway.
4. You say that punk increased your political awareness, in all
seriousness, good for you. "Prog" IMO tends to lend to that part of the
brain that not really tells you what to think, but how to think. It
increases the capacity to adapt mentally.
But like yours, mine too is just an opinion, no more or less true
than perception allows.

For clarification, there should be no "3D" in the link.

Let's try this again, when I sent it, it worked. If there is a "3D"
after the "=3D", delete it.

Don't know how far you all go back but lets talk Majesty! Their =3D
influence.... Iron Maiden, RUSH and the Beatles. Believe it or not Mike
=3D
gave me a tape way back in 84 of their band. This band would become =3D
Dream Theater after some evolution. Long ballads with intense =3D
instrumentation in the RUSH style. Mikes licks were heavily influenced
=3D
by Neil and vocals were high pitched. Queensryche is a great band, seen
=3D
them three times, DT is something special. Bands that parallel may have
=3D
some influence but one is not built off the other. Rising Power was a
=3D
great intro tape but Images and Words is a masterpiece with one of the
=3D
greatest songs ever written Metropolis. Dig deep when you look for =3D
influence.
