Hmm, this got me thinking... DT should dump MP and get Virgil.
Or even better, just add Virgil, I dig the two drummer sound. Then they will
have to play in Australia!

Although DT is the shizz, I have to admit Virgil is SOME drummer. I have only seen MP live once, but I've seen all his videos and stuff, whereas I've seen Virgil twice in the past few years. Virgil can pull of some stuff that I am not sure MP can pull off, which isn't an easy task. However, I'm sure MP can play some stuff Virgil can't as well.
I just think On The Virg should release another album, dammit... that's one of my all time fave cds...

>I believe all albums up till FII were.

No : I believe 90% of the ideas on SFAM were written beforehand.
6DOIT was written in the studio.
As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong):
WDADU; IAW; CoS; Aw; FII; SFAM were all pre-written => as I've heard DEMOs
from them all except Awake.
6DOIT was the only studio written.
DT has heard the critics from the fans on this way of writting.
So they've brought back, what I think of being, their best way of song
writting, after reflection on this criticism ! :)
But the most important question is :
HOW ARE WE GOING TO WAIT THE WHOLE SUMMER ! ?
See ye soon,

Petrucci, Myung, Portnoy and Sherinian all went to the Berklee school of
music in Boston, MA. Berklee is a music-dedicated school that has produced
the likes of Steve Vai, Al Di Meola and Chris DeGarmo. Jordan Rudess
attended Julliard in New York from the age of 9, and Kevin Moore went to
SUNY Fredonia, in New York.
The two Johns and Kevin also went to high school together.
Info in the FAQ..

Can't locate if they graduated or not, but here's some more in the Faq....
www.dtfaq.com
September 1986 was when it all began. Guitarist John Petrucci and his
bassist friend John Myung both attended the Berklee School of Music in
Boston, and they were looking to form a band in their spare time. They came
across drummer Mike Portnoy in one of Berklee's rehearsal rooms, and after a
few days chatting they decided to give it a shot.
They contacted high school friend Kevin Moore to fill the keyboardist
position, and vocalist Chris Collins completed the line-up to be known as
Majesty.
The quintet started jamming in their free time, and recorded a short demo
tape consisting of 8 tracks to be distributed around the local area. The
demo tape was called the 'Majesty Demos', and sold 1000 copies within the
first 6 months of availability. Amazingly, the demos continued to be copied
and distributed by fans and is still widely available today.
The following November, the band underwent their first in a long string of
line-up changes as Chris Collins and Majesty parted ways. In need of a
singer, the band continued writing and recording demos for about a year to
follow, and instrumental versions of some future DT classics were conceived.
Finally, in November 1987, the band recruited Charlie Dominici as their
singer and frontman. Eager to professionally distribute their demoed
material, the band signed to Mechanic Records and started working on When
Dream and Day Unite.
Unfortunately, before they could get too far, they were contacted by a Las
Vegas band also called Majesty and were forced to change their name. Names
were considered and discarded, until Howard Portnoy (Mike's father)
suggested they use the name Dream Theater, the name of a now demolished
California cinema.
When Dream and Day Unite was completed and distributed throughout the
underground prog scene, gathering quite a bit of support from starving prog
rockers waiting for another Yes- or Rush-esque masterpiece. Unfortunately,
the band were restricted to small clubs and bars as Mechanic lacked the size
and funding to provide a suitable tour program.

If you are going to say that SFaM was pre-written, you have to acknowledge
that it was pre-written about 5-6 years before the album was released, and
most of what was pre-written is not found in the actual album. For the most
part, they wrote that album in the studio as they recorded.
I think their whole write while recording thing started off with LTE.
Everything from LTE onwards was written in the studio. I don't count the Met
2 demo as a demo for the album. Neither does MP, I think, because he tried
so hard to stop it getting out because it wasn't intended to be a polished
demo.
I'm sure I remember MP saying something along the lines of after FII, they
asked the record label to give them the chance to do things their way, and
they didn't make any demos, didn't give anything to the label, they wrote it
all in the studio. Sure, they used some of the themes they'd done before,
but not too much. Also, you can hear some of Beyond This Life in one of JP's
live solos from some time before SFaM was released. Do you count that as
pre-written?
