Back in '93 my friend that got me into Rush played me "Take the Time". It
was the beginning of new enlightenment :-) Since then anyone I want to
impress with DT, it must be with this song.

    I call that contamination ;).
It's so cool to get the people around you to dig the same music.

Up to the SFNY DVD, I used "A man beside itself" in the correct order for
metal heads, and starting with the Silent Man for the others.
But since then I just pass SFNY, the whole first non stop passage from the
first "tick tack" to title screen coming up "DREAMTHEATER" on a black
background (at the end of ) is a total hooker.
IMO after that if you are not blown away, your not into that kind of music.

I'm always careful of pointing out the GROWING of prog music and that not
many (no one?) can judge a song on the first listen.

Well, Mike. I remember this convo a little while back, and it seemed you had
had a rare bad run in with CDUniverse. So here's my story.

After finding out Utopia in Sydney once again had no idea who Dream Theater
were (except for the one guy in there who probably holds the whole prog
scene there together), I decided to pre-order. CDUniverse had better
shipping prices for shipping time given than Amazon, so away I placed my
order. Then I saw your post, and I thought "Hmm, hope it's an isolated
    incident."

So, they send me an email on November 10th, saying "Lucky you, your CD just
shipped", and I'm like "W00t, 2-5 days and it's sweet."

    2-5 days passes.

9 days pass. I send an email, "Yo fathead, where's my CD?". I receive a
reply "Your CD has been shipped with FedEx. It must be in customs in your
country. They will contact you, you might need to pay duties. Sometimes they
may not contact you, you have to wait 30 days before we will ship another
CD." So I point out it's not reasonable to claim 2-5 days shipping if they
don't care until it hits 30 days, and that I chose a more expensive option
for shipping which I didn't need to do in the end. So he refunds me the
difference in shipping costs. At least I get that much.

~25 days after they supposedly shipped the CD, it shows up in my mail box. I
wasn't contacted by customs at all, it has no markings of being touched by
Australian customs, and it is unopened. It also has no markings of FedEx,
only USPS, which makes me wonder if it has been sent with the wrong shipping
method. It also has a sticker on it with a return address for an undelivered
parcel... in Sweden. WTF does Sweden have to do with my package??

So I sent FatHead another mail, asking to know what the hell happened. He
has not responded in the week since I have sent the mail.

So instead I send the jam a mail. Shop elsewhere.

    Niall

PS: Luckily, I got a ripped copy from my friend's CD on November 11th
(bought in a back alley shop in Sydney, arrrrrrg) and was listening to it
gleefully all that time anyway. But I had to wait till I had my CD before I
    could watch the bonus footage.

y'know....I'm not sure I've ever managed to turn
anyone into a dream theater fan, at least not a real,
let's go to see 'em in concert fanatic....I did run
Images and Words past a friend once, was at his place
a few years later, and he had that and Awake, but,
that's probably the most headway I've ever made with
turning someone unfamiliar with the band into a
believer....with, basically, a couple of exceptions
(hi Sarah), none of my friends really share my tastes
    in music....

The track that initially got me hooked on to DT was Ytsejam. A friend of
mine played it for me during band class in high school several years ago and
I thought it was pretty cool. He then played me Pull Me Under and Metropolis
Pt. 1 and I was hooked. I went out and bought Images and Words a couple days
later and within a couple weeks I had every DT album to date. That was right
about when FII came out. Unfortunately, I have yet to get anyone else really
hooked on DT. A couple of my friends are casual listeners, but not big fans.

What went around came around. The guy who got me into good music (e.g.
Zep, Sabbath etc) went into the Israeli army for a few years. During
the time he was there, I got all prog, and on his return I was able to
stun him with DT, Rush, and the usual suspects. I knew he'd like them,
but I believe I got him started by lending him Hemispheres and A Change
    Of Seasons.

It was the least I could do - if it wasn't for him I might still be
listening to Prince and Janet Jackson. ;)

PS Actually Prince was good in the 80's.

Yeah, the DJs are usually pretty good, but some of
them have a hard time formulating sentences!! I
suppose I should cut them some slack as they're silly
    college students ;)

That's awesome. I hope he gets lazy more often.

The song I showed my friends was not a song at all. I showed all of my
friends the DVD of 'Scenes from a Memory" and they were hooked from then on. I had
to show them the DVD because its the only way to get someone into DT. You have
to see them in concert in order to truely be amazed. Everybody I showed the
DVD to were mesmerized at all the stuff going on and were instant fans. Even the
people who were 'punks' and 'metel' lovers were hooked by DT and converted
into the religion of DT. It just goes to show you how great Dream Theater is.
They were able to attracted people from other genres of music. Just the very
sight of them working hard and doing what they do made people I show it to a fan
of theirs. Rock on, Dream Theater. I used to be the only kid at my school who
knew who Dream Theater was. And now there is a small 'cult' of us who love you
    guys :)

Man, I was at my parents house yesterday. They buy the local Greek
newspaper. On Mondays they have a section in english and I was just
flicking through it when my eye caught the Greek music charts.
The good news. TOT is at No 2.!!!!! They don't even get radio play here
(not that I've heard). I know when I went there 12 years ago my cousins
were into some really cool stuff. I was really impressed because even
though we'd never met before our music tastes were almost the same. And
believe me, there are a lot of cousins, so this doesn't really surprise me
that my favourite band is up there in the charts. They are lucky that top
bands regularly travel all over Europe, while we get just the usual
mainstream acts most of the time. The distance and relatively small
    population works against us.

The bad news? Britney is No 1. :-(

    George.
